To buy HDFC Bank’s Indian-listed equity, open a trading account with an eligible broker and a demat account to hold the shares electronically, link or designate a bank account as the broker requires, and place an order for NSE symbol HDFCBANK or BSE code 500180. Check the order details and charges before submitting it, then confirm execution and, after settlement, the shares in your demat holdings.
What accounts do you need?
A demat account is the electronic repository for shares. A broker’s trading account is used to place buy and sell orders. A bank account is used to fund transactions according to the broker’s process. Some providers package a linked bank, demat and trading account as a 3-in-1 arrangement, but that setup is optional; you do not have to use HDFC securities to buy HDFC Bank shares. HDFC securities describes the distinction between demat and trading accounts and provides an example of a linked-account journey on its demat account and 3-in-1 account pages.
Identify the correct HDFC Bank security
For HDFC Bank Limited’s Indian-listed equity, use the NSE symbol HDFCBANK or BSE code 500180. Its ISIN is INE040A01034. These identifiers are listed on the bank’s investor-relations listing information and are also shown in an NSE filing for the financial year from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026. The issuer lists its US-listed American Depository Shares separately, so use the Indian symbol or code when placing an order on an Indian exchange.
How to buy HDFC Bank shares
- Choose an eligible broker. Check that it serves your residency and account situation, and review its account structure, order features, support and current regulatory disclosures. A linked bank account may be required by one provider but not another.
- Complete account opening and KYC. Follow the selected broker’s current onboarding instructions and document checklist. Requirements vary by provider. HDFC securities, for example, lists PAN and consistent identifying details among its account-opening materials on its documents page; do not assume another broker uses the same form or checklist.
- Link or designate a bank account and arrange funds. Use the broker’s stated process to add funds or otherwise fund a purchase. A 3-in-1 account is one way to connect banking, trading and demat services, not a requirement for the transaction.
- Find the listed equity in the broker platform. Search for HDFCBANK on NSE or 500180 on BSE, and verify that the result is HDFC Bank Limited equity. Do not select a differently listed security such as the bank’s US-listed American Depository Shares.
- Review and submit the order. Confirm the exchange, order type, quantity and displayed price or price conditions. Review the brokerage, demat fees if applicable, transaction charges and statutory charges shown by the broker before submitting. An order may not execute merely because it has been placed.
- Check execution and holdings. Review the order status to see whether it was executed, partially executed or remains open. After settlement, check the demat holdings for the credited shares. Provider screens and processing timelines vary, so an order submission is not a guarantee of execution or a particular settlement time.
Check fees and risk before investing
There is no single universal total cost established for buying the share. Fees depend on the broker, account type, order and transaction. Consult the chosen broker’s current brokerage and demat fee schedule, applicable transaction and statutory charges, and the total displayed before you place an order.
#1 Best Overall
Buying HDFC Bank shares is an investment decision, not just an account procedure. The share price can move, and you can lose money; consider whether you can bear exposure to one company and whether the investment fits your goals and risk tolerance. HDFC securities’ investor warning notes that securities are subject to market risks and that registration does not guarantee intermediary performance or returns. For company information such as results, annual reports, presentations and shareholder material, consult HDFC Bank’s investor-relations resources. The purchase steps here do not assess the bank’s valuation or whether its shares suit your circumstances.
