How to Evaluate an NBFC’s Quarterly Results: A Checklist for Asset Growth, AUM and Loan Quality

Learn how to evaluate an Indian NBFC’s quarterly results by checking what AUM includes, whether loan quality is holding up, and how provisions, profitability and funding support growth.

To evaluate an Indian non-banking financial company’s quarterly results, first identify its lending business and applicable regulatory category, then test asset and AUM growth against portfolio quality, provisions, profitability, funding, liquidity and capital. A headline growth rate is meaningful only when you know what it measures and whether the lender can sustain it without deterioration in collections or credit quality.

1. Establish what the NBFC does and how it reports

Start with the company’s products, borrowers and collateral: a lender focused on secured vehicle loans is not directly comparable with one making unsecured consumer loans. Also note whether the results are standalone or consolidated and which Reserve Bank of India (RBI) category or regulatory layer applies.

Regulatory requirements can differ by NBFC category, including rules related to capital, non-performing assets (NPAs), liquidity and accounting. The RBI’s NBFC overview sets out this category-specific context. Do not apply a threshold or prudential requirement to a lender unless it applies to that lender and exposure.

2. Test asset growth and understand the AUM number

Read the issuer’s definition of assets under management (AUM) before using it. There is no single universal AUM definition established across all NBFCs in the sources consulted; companies may include different combinations of on-balance-sheet loans and managed or transferred portfolios. Check the definition and notes in the results presentation and filings.

Where disclosure allows, reconcile AUM with loans on the balance sheet and any portfolio managed, securitised or assigned. Compare both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year growth, then look across several reporting periods to distinguish a sustained trend from a single-quarter change.

Investigate the source of growth. New originations, product mix changes, acquisitions, securitisation or assignment, and a revised AUM definition can affect the reported figure in different ways. AUM growth alone does not show how much credit risk remains on the lender’s books.

3. Check whether loan quality is keeping pace with growth

Look beyond the headline gross and net NPA ratios. Read the definitions and denominators, and review overdue or special-mention buckets, collection performance, stressed-account movement, restructuring, write-offs and recoveries. An NPA ratio can look stable while early delinquencies or write-offs are changing, so consider the indicators together.

The RBI’s 2025 income-recognition, asset-classification and provisioning directions specify asset classes and state that classification is borrower-wise rather than facility-wise. They also state that rescheduling alone does not support upgrading an asset, subject to applicable stressed-asset resolution requirements. The directions contain rules that vary by applicable category and exposure; check the current official text and its applicability before relying on a specific rule.

4. Read provisions alongside portfolio stress

Compare provisions, credit cost and coverage measures with loan growth, delinquencies, write-offs, recoveries and collateral. Consider whether provisioning is keeping pace with the risks visible in the portfolio rather than judging it from a single ratio.

For an NBFC applying Indian Accounting Standards (Ind AS), examine expected-credit-loss (ECL) assumptions and any disclosed reconciliation with prudential provisioning. The RBI overview explains that Ind AS introduces ECL and that a prudential floor is used; it also notes that judgment in principle-based accounting can reduce comparability. Provisioning requirements depend on the applicable regulatory category, asset class and collateral recoverability.

5. Work out what drove profitability

Follow the path from interest income to profit: compare lending yields with funding costs, then account for operating expenses, credit costs and tax. This helps distinguish stronger underlying operations from profit driven mainly by a one-off gain, recovery or accounting effect.

There is no universal benchmark margin established for every NBFC. Compare a lender with its own history and with peers that have similar products, borrower segments and risk profiles, using company filings for the underlying figures.

6. Test whether funding, liquidity and capital can support growth

Review borrowing sources and concentrations, maturity profile, cost of funds, liquidity buffers, capital adequacy or leverage, and any applicable liquidity requirements. The practical question is whether the lender can keep funding its business if credit costs rise or market access tightens.

The RBI identifies counterparty failures, funding and asset concentration, interest-rate movements, liquidity and solvency among NBFC risks. Its framework also makes clear that capital and liquidity requirements vary by category. Treat rapid growth as a capacity question as well as a demand signal.

7. Check the underlying disclosures

Use the quarterly presentation as a guide, not a substitute for filings. Review the financial statements and notes, management commentary, auditor observations, risk management and asset-liability management disclosures, capital, NPA and provisioning details, and any material regulatory or accounting changes. Check that headline AUM and growth claims are consistent with the company’s definitions and accounting statements.

How to compare NBFCs and reporting periods

Keep the comparison basis consistent. For periods and peers, align standalone versus consolidated reporting, on-book versus managed assets, fiscal period, portfolio definitions and accounting treatment. Choose peers with comparable products, borrower segments, collateral, seasoning and regulatory treatment; otherwise, apparent differences may reflect business mix rather than performance.

Useful comparison dimensions include growth, portfolio mix, collection and delinquency trends, gross and net NPA, provisioning and credit cost, profitability, borrowing mix and cost, liquidity, capital, concentration and disclosure quality. These are analytical comparison axes, not regulator-prescribed ranking criteria.
