How to Test Your Broadband Speed and Troubleshoot a Slow Connection

A low Wi-Fi speed test does not necessarily mean your broadband line is faulty. Compare repeat Ethernet and Wi-Fi tests, troubleshoot the part of the connection that is slow, and contact your provider with a clear record if wired results remain poor.

To find out whether a slow connection is caused by your broadband service, Wi-Fi, a device, or household demand, test more than once and compare a wired result with Wi-Fi where possible. A speed test over Wi-Fi measures both the service entering your home and the wireless link to your device, so a low Wi-Fi score alone does not prove a line fault.

How to run a useful broadband speed test

  1. Connect by Ethernet if possible. Use a computer connected directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. Ofcom describes this as the most accurate way to test because Wi-Fi can reduce the result. If you cannot connect by cable, test near the router and note that the result was over Wi-Fi. Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi guidance explains the distinction.

  2. Reduce competing activity. Pause downloads, large uploads, cloud backups, game updates, and high-bandwidth streaming where practical. Note whether other people or devices are using the connection; household activity can affect results and the experience of delay.

  3. Repeat the test. Run it at different times of day and on several days. A single test is only a snapshot, since performance can vary with time and household use.

    • What you will get: 1 * TLP-123A Network Cable Tester, 1 * user manual, 2 * AAA batteries
  4. Compare like with like. If you can, use the same device to test over Ethernet, over Wi-Fi close to the router, and over Wi-Fi in the room where the problem occurs. Run the tests at roughly similar times. This helps show whether the weak point is the service, the wireless link, or coverage in a particular part of the home.

  5. Check your expected speed and keep a record. Compare results with the speed estimate or package details in your contract, or ask your provider what speed to expect. Record the date and time, device, connection method, and result so you can show whether there is a recurring pattern. Ofcom’s broadband speed guidance covers expected speeds and customer protections.

Speed and latency are different measures. A speed figure describes data transfer, while latency is delay. High delay can make video calls and online games feel poor even when a speed test result alone looks adequate.

Use the results to locate the problem

What you find What it may indicate What to try next
One device is slow, while others work normally A device-specific issue is more likely than a whole-home service problem. Restart the device, close unused apps, and check for software and security updates.
Several devices are slow on Wi-Fi, but wired tests are better The wireless connection, router placement, interference, or coverage may be the limiting factor. Test near the router, then improve placement and check the Wi-Fi environment.
Several devices are slow, including over Ethernet The issue may be with the broadband service, line, or provider equipment. Check for an outage and contact your provider with your test log if the problem persists.
Only one room has weak Wi-Fi Distance, walls, obstacles, or interference may be weakening the signal there. Try changes to router placement first; consider coverage equipment only if the service reaching the router is adequate.

Check for an outage and heavy household use

Look at your provider’s service-status page or app. Ask whether anyone is downloading large files, uploading backups, or streaming high-definition video, and temporarily disconnect devices that are not in use.

Restart the equipment

Restart the affected device and router. If you have full fibre, your setup may also include an optical network terminal (ONT). Check your provider’s or equipment manufacturer’s instructions before restarting or changing settings on that device.

Improve router placement

Put the router in an open, elevated, roughly central spot, with as few walls and obstacles as practical between it and the devices. Keep it away from potential sources of interference such as microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors, dimmer switches, and speakers.

Supports safe testing of telephone lines with typical voltages under 48-72V, ideal for both home and professional use.

Check the Wi-Fi band

If your router and devices support more than one Wi-Fi band, try reconnecting to the other available band. The FCC says 2.4 GHz generally covers more area, while 5 GHz can transmit data faster; actual performance depends on the home and equipment. The FCC consumer guide provides further Wi-Fi guidance.

Check the telephone socket setup

If your router connects through a telephone socket, Ofcom advises using the main socket and avoiding extension leads where possible. Some setups may require a microfilter; ask your provider before changing line equipment.

When to contact your broadband provider

Contact the provider if repeated tests over Ethernet remain slow across devices, or if the connection repeatedly drops or performs well below the speed you were told to expect. Openreach also advises customers to contact their retail provider first about slow broadband.

Give the provider the information needed to investigate:

  • When the problem started and whether it is constant or intermittent.
  • Your test dates, times, results, devices, and whether each test used Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
  • Whether the problem affects one device, Wi-Fi only, or wired connections too.
  • Any outage checks, restarts, or other troubleshooting you have already tried.

The provider can check the service and advise on line or equipment tests. In the UK, some customers of providers signed up to applicable Ofcom codes may be able to leave without penalty if a qualifying network problem is not fixed within 30 days. This is not a universal right: confirm the provider’s current code participation, the promised speed that applies to your contract, and your eligibility with the provider or Ofcom before relying on it. See Ofcom’s speed and code guidance.

Should you buy Wi-Fi or broadband equipment?

Choose equipment only after identifying which part of the connection is limiting performance. A cable helps diagnose Wi-Fi; coverage products address some in-home wireless problems. Neither repairs an external broadband line fault, and no coverage product can increase the service entering the router.

Option When it may help Limits to consider
Ethernet cable When a compatible computer and router can be connected directly, especially for a diagnostic test. Choose a cable suitable for the speeds and ports of your devices. The cited guidance does not establish a particular cable category or model.
Mesh Wi-Fi When the broadband service to the router is adequate but coverage is weak across a larger home or in particular rooms. Ofcom says two or three units may help some homes, but mesh can be expensive and too many units can make issues worse. Follow the manufacturer’s placement advice.
Wi-Fi booster or powerline adapter When you need to extend coverage and have confirmed that the problem is in the home rather than the service. Boosters can affect speed, and powerline performance depends on the home’s electrical wiring. Ofcom advises checking for a UKCA or CE safety mark.
Replacement router When your provider confirms that an updated router is appropriate. Ask the provider first: a third-party router may be harder to set up and may not be supported.
Different broadband service When tests and provider checks show that the current service is the limiting factor and a suitable alternative is available at your address. Compare address-specific expected download and upload speeds, reliability and technology, contract length, total cost, and the provider’s speed and fault commitments. Ofcom notes that full fibre may be faster and more reliable than older copper-based services; 5G or satellite may suit some customers.

For Wi-Fi coverage equipment, also check compatibility with your router and devices, your home’s layout, the location of weak-signal rooms, ease of setup, and total cost. The cited guidance does not establish current product rankings or model-level performance.
