Before buying, verify the item itself: check certification details in the issuer’s official database, compare any database image with the exact collectible, inspect holders and labels for signs of tampering, and scrutinize the seller and price. A certificate, hologram, or signing photo is only useful when it corresponds to the item being offered.
Start with item-specific verification
Ask what evidence connects this particular card, autograph, jersey, or game-used item to its claimed history. Search the certification number through the issuing organization’s official lookup, then compare the record’s details and any available image with the object in the listing or in your hands. A valid number alone does not establish that the item paired with it is genuine.

Authentication programs have different scopes. Check what item type a program covers, what evidence it records, whether the specific item appears in its lookup, and whether the record matches. The FBI also recommends considering an authenticator’s qualifications. The available guidance does not establish one service as best for every collectible.

PSA describes its holders as tamper-evident, not tamper-proof. Its buyer guidance identifies possible warning signs of a compromised holder, including cloudy “frosting” near the edges, cracks or fractures, unusual flexibility after the sonic weld has been broken, and edges that may pop open. These clues are not a complete test, and a particular forgery may not show every sign.

Also examine the label. PSA describes a counterfeit-label tactic in which a fake front is added over a genuine label. An extra layer may keep reverse-side text from showing clearly when light passes through, or part of the authentic label may be visible beneath it. Verify the certification details using PSA’s buyer security guidance and its FAQ, then match the record to the card and holder in front of you.
Assess autographs and letters of authenticity
For PSA/DNA paperwork, compare the certification number on the label and documents with PSA’s online record. Where an item image is available, make sure it depicts the exact object being offered. PSA lists security features on its documentation such as a tamper-evident label, a color-changing embedded hologram, watermarks on letters of authenticity, and an item image.

PSA describes its examination process as including ink analysis, autograph-structure analysis, object evaluation, side-by-side comparison, and possible video spectral comparison. That is PSA’s description of its own service; it does not establish that every certificate from every issuer is genuine.
Compare the signature with known examples and consider the authenticator’s qualifications, as the FBI advises. A photograph supposedly showing an athlete signing is not item-specific proof: the U.S. Postal Inspection Service warns that such photos may be stolen or stock imagery.

Inspect jerseys, limited editions, and MLB items
For a limited-edition collectible, find the actual edition size rather than relying on the phrase “limited edition.” On jerseys, compare stitching patterns, nameplates, and patches with photographs of known genuine examples; a general resemblance is not the same as a match on the item’s construction.
For an item represented as signed or game-used under MLB’s authentication program, check its hologram and enter the serial number in MLB’s authentication database. MLB says its program covers eligible items witnessed being signed or used by designated authenticators. Its licensed-product holograms are different from authentication holograms and do not appear in the game-used/autograph verification system.

- You will be receiving at least one (1) pack from each sport
Vet the seller and the deal
- Research the seller’s identity and reputation, and read the refund policy before paying.
- Compare prices for similar signed items. A steep discount on a valuable autograph is a warning sign, not proof of fraud.
- Do not treat a seller’s story, certificate, hologram, or signing photo as a substitute for matching the evidence to the exact item.
The FBI’s buyer warning is apt: “Always be mindful that if an item seems too good to be true, it probably is.” The FBI attributes that statement to Special Agent Brian Brusokas of its Art Crimes team. The Postal Inspection Service’s guidance also advises researching the seller and cautions that a signing photo may not be genuine evidence.
When the evidence still does not add up
If the record, image, label, or physical details do not match, pause the purchase and ask the seller for clearer item-specific evidence or use the stated return terms. For a high-value item that remains uncertain, a professional authentication service may be worth considering. Confirm the provider’s current scope, process, and fees before relying on its assessment.
Official pages can change: the PSA and MLB pages cited here are undated in the accessed view, the FBI advisory relates to the 2016 Cubs championship season, and the Postal Inspection Service page was last updated May 2, 2019. These checks can help assess risk, but they are not remote authentication of a particular collectible. The official guidance cited here does not establish a market-wide counterfeit rate.
