Authentication can help in specific situations, but a platform’s inspection may not verify every autograph, patch, or relic.
How do I prepare a sports card or collectible for sale?
Identify and document the item
Record the player or signer, sport, manufacturer or event when known, year or era, card set and number, serial numbering, and grade and certification number if the card is slabbed. For memorabilia, distinguish a manufacturer-issued autograph or relic from one added later. Keep receipts, certificates, and correspondence, but describe what each document is; do not present it as independent proof unless it is.

Photograph the front and back, edges, corners, signatures, labels, and visible defects in clear light. Keep these records with the listing and transaction documents. For eligible eBay cards, the authenticator compares the item with the title, description, and images; a mismatch in condition or authenticity can prevent it from being sent to the buyer. eBay’s seller guidance explains the program’s inspection process.

Look for recent completed sales of the same item, or genuinely comparable examples. Account for grade, condition, version, scarcity, autograph status, and sale date. An asking price is not evidence that an item sold for that amount.

Estimate net proceeds, not just the headline sale price. Include the current platform or consignment fees, shipping, any insurance you choose, grading or authentication costs, and possible return exposure. Fee schedules and payout terms can change, so check the current terms for your account and item before committing.
Which selling route fits your item?
Consider the likely net proceeds, audience and sale format, effort, time to payout, item eligibility, return rules, handling chain, insurance responsibility, and whether you can withdraw the item. A high headline sale or low advertised fee alone does not establish which route is best for your item.

When does marketplace authentication help?
Authentication programs have specific eligibility rules and inspection scopes. On eBay.com, the current seller guidance says qualifying sports trading card singles may be covered at a Buy It Now price of $200 or more, or an auction sale of $200 or more. Graded cards must come from the approved graders listed by eBay, and seller and buyer location restrictions apply. For a qualifying item, eBay automatically includes it and directs the seller to ship it to the authenticator. Check the live eBay eligibility and seller guidance before listing because criteria can change.
The inspection checks that an item is consistent with the listing and includes a physical inspection. It is not blanket proof of every attribute: eBay says its card inspection does not itself authenticate autographs, patches, or relics in specified cases. Describe exactly what you know and avoid implying that the program verified something outside its stated scope.

Signed items and authentication
PSA describes autograph examination methods that can include ink analysis, autograph-structure analysis, evaluation of the object, side-by-side comparisons, and possible video spectral comparison. Whether authentication is worthwhile depends on the item’s likely market and the cost and time of the service. The available PSA information does not establish a universal resale-price increase from authentication. For a direct sale
- Check the destination’s current instructions. Follow the marketplace’s label, packaging, and delivery requirements for that transaction.
- Protect the item from movement and impact. Choose a rigid mailer or box suited to the item, protect corners and surfaces, and fill space so the contents do not shift.
- Document the parcel. Photograph the item and its packed condition before handoff. Keep the tracking receipt and delivery status with the listing and messages.
- Match shipping protection to the item. For high-value memorabilia, confirm directly with the carrier and platform whether the service and any declared-value coverage apply to the actual contents and value. Terms and exclusions differ; do not assume a shipment is fully covered.
For a PSA card submission
PSA’s submission packing directions apply to its own process, not to every direct sale. The guide calls for clear penny sleeves, semi-rigid card holders, cardboard dividers, rubber bands, a new shipping box, bubble wrap, packing tape, and tracking. It instructs submitters to put each card in a penny sleeve and semi-rigid holder, secure the stack between dividers, fill empty space in the box, and apply the tracking label. For PSA submissions, it says not to use toploaders, tape, pull tabs, or sticky notes on cards. Follow the current PSA Shipping Guide rather than assuming its instructions apply to another destination.
PSA states that it assumes responsibility for items while they are in its possession but does not accept liability for damage or loss during shipping. Understand who is responsible at each stage before sending a submission.

How do I keep the transaction documented?
- Use the platform’s payment and messaging workflow when its protections depend on staying on-platform.
- Do not agree to a changed shipping address or an off-platform payment arrangement that conflicts with the order or platform instructions.
- Keep a copy of the listing, messages, item photographs, shipping receipt, tracking, and delivery status.
- Read the current platform and carrier terms for returns, disputes, coverage, and payment. These vary by service, item, jurisdiction, and transaction; do not assume any payment method or marketplace guarantees a particular outcome.
