Before sharing personal details, paying a fee or accepting a digital loan offer in India, independently verify the bank or NBFC that will lend the money. Check that the app or intermediary is connected to that lender, read the Key Fact Statement and loan documents, and refuse requests for your PIN, OTP or password. Urgency, unexplained advance payments and unsolicited app links are warning signs—not proof by themselves—so use several checks before deciding.
Start by finding out who is actually lending
A digital lending app may be run by a regulated bank or non-bank financial company (NBFC), or by a lending service provider (LSP) acting for one. The app’s name is not necessarily the lender’s name. An app or intermediary claiming to be “RBI registered” does not, by itself, establish that a particular offer is genuine.

Find the bank or NBFC named in the offer, then visit that lender’s official website by typing its address yourself or using a trusted bookmark. Look for the app or service provider in the lender’s own information. If the relationship or offer is unclear, contact the lender using details published on its official site—not a phone number or link in the message you received.
The RBI’s Financial Awareness Messages (FAME) advises customers to check a digital lending app’s association or outsourcing arrangement on the bank’s or NBFC’s website. RBI also announced a public repository of digital lending apps in August 2024 to help customers verify those associations. Regulated entities submit the repository information and report additions or deletions, so treat it as a verification aid rather than a guarantee that every entry is current or that a specific message came from the lender. If the listing and lender’s own information do not settle the question, ask the lender directly.

Using an LSP or digital lending app does not remove the regulated lender’s obligations. RBI’s Digital Lending Guidelines, issued on September 2, 2022, say that outsourcing to an LSP or using a DLA does not diminish a regulated entity’s obligations. The practical implication for a borrower is to identify the regulated entity behind the offer rather than relying only on the intermediary’s branding.
Check the relationship, not just the name
Use more than one clue when checking an app or intermediary. Compare the lender named in the offer with the entity identified on the lender’s official website and in the loan documents. If there is a difference, ask the lender to explain it before sharing information or accepting the offer. An app listing or repository entry can help establish an association, but it cannot by itself show that the particular message, caller or payment request you received is authentic.
Be cautious of claims such as “approved by RBI” or “RBI guaranteed.” RBI has warned about unauthorized lending apps and other services falsely claiming registration or accreditation. A regulator’s name, logo or badge in an advertisement is not a substitute for verifying the lender directly. Nor does a company’s registration information or a physical address, by itself, prove that it is the lender named in a particular offer.

Check the offer before you install an app or share information
Pause when the message creates pressure
A “limited period” claim, a countdown, or pressure to decide immediately is a reason to stop and verify independently. RBI consumer-awareness material identifies urgency as a tactic used by fraudulent loan websites and apps. A genuine offer can still have an expiry date, but that claim is not a reason to skip lender verification or document review.
Do not let a deadline prevent you from checking who is lending, reading the written terms or asking about a charge. If a sender says that a loan will disappear unless you act through a particular link or transfer money immediately, leave that interaction and contact the named lender through a channel you locate independently. The pressure itself is a warning sign; it does not, on its own, establish whether the lender or offer is genuine.
Treat an advance-payment demand as a serious warning
Be especially cautious if someone asks you to transfer money before processing an application, particularly to an individual or an unfamiliar account. RBI consumer-awareness guidance says a reputed bank or NBFC will not ask for payment before processing a loan application. This is a warning to verify the request, not a claim that every legitimate charge at every stage of every loan is impossible. Do not pay a fee just because a message says it will unlock approval; contact the named lender through its independently verified channel and ask what the charge is, when it is due and where it must be paid.
Compare the answer with the KFS and other loan documents. Check whether the charge, its purpose and timing are explained in the written terms, and whether the recipient is consistent with what the lender confirms. If the person requesting payment cannot be independently connected to the lender, or the lender will not confirm the request, do not send money while the question is unresolved. A request to pay an individual or unfamiliar account is a particularly serious reason to pause.

- SECURE YOUR WALLET FROM e-PICKPOCKETING: Prevent potential identity and financial theft through your contactless cards. This is the simplest and most effective prevention solution! Block RFID and NFC signals, protect your personal information, and enjoy peace of mind wherever your travels or business take you.
- JAMMING CHIP: An antenna and jamming chip makes up the main components of the card. The antenna will sense incoming radio waves and draw power for the chip to create a jamming signal. Lifetime usage as the card does not require battery.
- BROAD WORKING DISTANCE: With a 2.4” working distance, your entire wallet stays protected. The premium RFID blocking card helps secure cards within 1.2” on either side, providing reliable protection against electronic pickpocketing.
- ULTRA-THIN & COMPACT: At the size of a standard credit card and at only 0.03” thick, the card will fit into any wallet, purse or card case. Keep your wallet compact with no added bulk from this card. Best for travel, business, and everyday use.
- TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.
Do not follow unsolicited installation or payment links
Do not install a lending app from an unsolicited SMS or social-media link. RBI warns that spurious apps may access device information. If you want to check an app, navigate to the lender’s official website and follow its instructions rather than trusting a link in an offer. Do not enter bank or payment credentials after following a message or email link.
Apply the same caution to messages that ask you to update details, verify an account or pay a fee to release credit. Do not treat a familiar-looking logo, sender name or message as proof of origin. Find the lender’s contact information independently and ask whether it sent the offer and whether the app or intermediary is associated with it.
Check the identity and contact details
Look for the company’s registration information, physical address and contact details, then verify the named regulated lender separately. Missing or inconsistent details should prompt more checking. A logo, badge, regulator name or claim of RBI approval in an advertisement is not proof: RBI has warned about unauthorized lending apps and services falsely claiming registration or accreditation.
Look for a grievance contact for the lender or service provider as well. Having a published contact does not make an offer authentic, but an inability to verify who is responsible or how to raise a complaint is a reason not to rely on the sender’s assurances. Use contact details found through the lender’s own official information, not details supplied only in the offer.

Read the loan disclosures before accepting
Do not judge an offer only by a low headline rate, a fast-approval promise or the amount shown in an advertisement. Ask for the Key Fact Statement (KFS) and compare the annual percentage rate (APR), total cost, fees, amount disbursed and repayment schedule. Check that the figures and dates match what you were told. If a term is unclear or missing, ask the lender for an explanation before accepting.
The APR and total cost are useful comparison points because a headline rate alone does not tell you the full cost of borrowing. Compare the offer’s costs and repayment dates with the amount you would receive and the schedule you would need to meet. Review any listed charges alongside the other terms rather than assuming the advertised amount or rate describes the whole obligation.
RBI guidance calls for borrowers to read the KFS, sanction letter, loan agreement, privacy information and other loan documents. Check that loan-related documents are digitally signed and on the bank’s or NBFC’s letterhead. The lender named in those documents should match the entity you independently verified; an intermediary’s name alone is not a substitute.

- KFS: Check the APR, total cost, fees and repayment information. Ask for clarification if a charge or repayment term is not clear.
- Sanction letter and agreement: Confirm that the written loan is from the regulated lender you verified, and that its key terms match the offer.
- Privacy and data-storage information: Read how the lender describes its handling of information, and consider it together with the app permissions.
- Signatures and letterhead: RBI guidance says loan-related documents should be digitally signed and on the bank’s or NBFC’s letterhead. If these features are missing or the named entity differs, pause and ask the lender to clarify.
Do not accept a verbal assurance as a substitute for written terms. If you cannot obtain or understand the documents before accepting, wait until the lender provides an explanation. A quick decision is not worth taking on a loan whose cost, schedule or lender you cannot establish.
Review app permissions and data practices
Before installing a lending app, inspect the permissions it requests and the lender’s privacy and data-storage policies. Ask whether the requested access makes sense for a credit application. If the app seeks access that seems unrelated, or the policy does not explain how information is handled, pause and contact the named lender through an independently verified channel. RBI’s guidance specifically advises borrowers to check app permissions and privacy and data-storage policies.
Consider the permissions and privacy information together rather than treating either as a formality. If the app asks for access that does not seem connected to applying for credit, or you cannot understand what its policy says about information, do not assume that accepting the prompt is harmless. Ask the lender to explain the request before proceeding.
Do not provide a PIN, OTP or password in response to an offer or to someone claiming to help process it. A request for these credentials is not made safe by a lender logo, a familiar-looking message or a claim that it is needed to release a loan. Stop the interaction and verify the offer without using the sender’s contact details.

The label “UPI credit line” does not establish that an offer is genuine, and it does not establish that it is fraudulent. Verify which bank or regulated lender is extending the credit, whether the app or intermediary is associated with that lender, and whether the lender’s official information confirms the offer. Then read the KFS and agreement and protect your payment credentials just as you would for any other digital loan.
There is no single product-specific authenticity marker established here for every UPI credit-line offer. Availability, eligibility, fees and terms can differ by lender and offer, so do not infer them from the label alone. If a message asks you to open a link, disclose credentials or pay an unexplained amount, return to the lender’s official channel to check the claim.

There is also no basis to assume that every offer using this label has the same terms or is available to every borrower. Ask the named lender what product is being offered and read the written terms that apply to that offer. Compare the lender, intermediary, APR, total cost, fees, repayment schedule, permissions and grievance contact with the lender’s own disclosures. This gives you concrete points to verify without relying on a product label or an advertised promise.
Use a verification checklist to make the decision
| What to check | What to confirm | Reason to pause |
|---|---|---|
| Regulated lender | The bank or NBFC named in the offer is confirmed through its official website or a direct, independently verified contact. | The lender is not named, the identity differs across messages and documents, or the lender cannot confirm the offer. |
| App or intermediary | The lender’s information or the RBI digital lending app repository supports the stated association; ask the lender if unclear. | The only evidence is the app’s own claim, an advertisement badge or a message link. |
| Loan terms | The KFS, APR, fees, amount, repayment schedule, sanction letter and agreement are available and consistent. | Terms are withheld, inconsistent or explained only as a reason to act quickly. |
| Payment request | The lender independently confirms any charge, its purpose, timing and recipient. | You are pressed to send money before processing, especially to an individual or unfamiliar account. |
| Data and permissions | The app’s requested access and the privacy and data-storage information are understandable and relevant to the application. | The app seeks access that seems unrelated or does not explain its data practices. |
| Support and complaints | The lender or service provider publishes a grievance contact you can reach independently. | Contact details are missing, unverifiable or only available through the offer sender. |
No one warning sign conclusively proves fraud. A safer decision comes from checking the lender and intermediary independently, reviewing the documents and data practices, and refusing unsafe credential requests or unexplained advance payments. If an important check cannot be completed, do not proceed until the lender resolves it.

Compare an offer with the lender’s disclosures
For a useful comparison, use the same checks on every offer rather than comparing only the advertised rate. First confirm the regulated lender and the app or intermediary relationship. Then compare the APR and total cost, repayment schedule, other KFS terms, and the fees and when they are charged. Finally, consider whether the requested permissions and data practices are explained and whether you can verify a grievance channel. These checks help distinguish a documented offer from one that relies on branding, urgency or a sender’s assurances.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you already interacted with a suspicious offer
You installed or found a suspicious app, but no unauthorized transaction has occurred
RBI FAME guidance says suspicious loan apps should be reported to law-enforcement agencies, including apps found in app stores or received through SMS or social media. Keep the offer message and app details available when making a report. The guidance does not prescribe a specific evidence checklist, so do not delay reporting while trying to assemble one.
If you have not seen an unauthorized transaction, that does not make the app’s claims trustworthy. Do not continue sharing information or following payment instructions while you are checking the offer. Preserve the message and app details that you already have, and report the suspicious app to law enforcement as RBI guidance advises.
You have a loan-related complaint
First raise the complaint with the grievance redressal officer of the bank or NBFC, or of the LSP involved. If the bank or NBFC has not satisfactorily resolved it within 30 days, RBI guidance identifies the Complaint Management System under the Reserve Bank–Integrated Ombudsman Scheme (RB-IOS) as a route to lodge a complaint. Use the official complaint channel and retain the complaint and response details.
The 30-day interval is the stated escalation point for an unresolved or unsatisfactorily resolved complaint to a bank or NBFC; it is not a promise that a complaint will be decided or resolved within that period. Keep the acknowledgement and any response so you can refer to the original complaint when using the next route. Use official channels rather than a link from an unverified message.

You see an unauthorized electronic transaction
Contact your bank as soon as possible through its official reporting channel. RBI’s customer-protection notification directs banks to provide customers with 24×7 access through multiple channels to report unauthorized transactions and to take immediate steps to prevent further unauthorized transactions after notification. Keep the complaint acknowledgement and reference number. The liability outcome depends on the facts and applicable rules; prompt reporting is important, but reimbursement should not be assumed.
Do not wait for a lending-app complaint to be resolved before notifying the bank about an unauthorized transaction. Report it promptly through the bank’s official channel and retain the reference number. RBI guidance calls for immediate steps to prevent further unauthorized transactions after notification, but the specific liability outcome depends on the circumstances and applicable rules.
A practical stop-or-proceed rule
Proceed only when you can identify and independently verify the regulated lender, confirm the app or intermediary relationship, understand the written loan terms, and make sense of the app’s data practices. Stop if the offer depends on urgency, an unverified link, a credential request or an unexplained advance payment. When a claim remains uncertain, verify it directly with the lender rather than deciding based on the message itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I check whether a digital loan app is genuine?
Identify the bank or NBFC that will lend, then check its official website for the app or lending service provider relationship. RBI’s public digital lending app repository can also help verify associations, but information is submitted by regulated entities and may change as they report additions or deletions. Treat it as a verification aid, not proof that a particular message or offer is genuine. Contact the lender through independently verified details if anything is unclear.
Is a UPI credit-line offer automatically genuine or a scam?
No. The label alone proves neither legitimacy nor fraud. Verify the regulated lender and app or intermediary through official lender channels, read the KFS and agreement, and check the offer’s actual fees, APR, repayment schedule and other terms. Do not infer availability, eligibility or terms from the label.
Should I pay a processing fee before my loan is approved?
Treat a demand for payment before processing as a serious warning. RBI consumer-awareness guidance says a reputed bank or NBFC will not ask for payment before processing a loan application. Do not transfer money just because a sender promises approval. Independently contact the named lender and ask it to confirm the charge, its purpose, timing and recipient; distinguish that warning from a claim that every possible charge at every stage is illegitimate.
What should I check in the Key Fact Statement?
Review the APR, total cost, fees, amount and repayment schedule, and compare them with the offer and other loan documents. Read the sanction letter and loan agreement too. RBI guidance says loan-related documents should be digitally signed and on the bank or NBFC’s letterhead. Ask for written clarification if terms are missing, unclear or inconsistent.
What should I do if I already installed a suspicious loan app?
RBI FAME guidance says suspicious loan apps, including those found in app stores or received through SMS or social media, should be reported to law-enforcement agencies. Keep the offer message and app details available. If you also notice an unauthorized transaction, contact your bank immediately through an official reporting channel.
Where do I complain about a digital lender?
Start with the grievance redressal officer of the bank or NBFC, or the engaged LSP. If the bank or NBFC has not satisfactorily resolved the complaint within 30 days, RBI guidance identifies its Complaint Management System under the Reserve Bank–Integrated Ombudsman Scheme as an escalation route. For an unauthorized electronic transaction, notify the bank promptly rather than waiting for the lending complaint to be resolved.
The Bottom Line
Verify the regulated lender and its app or intermediary through official channels, read the KFS and loan documents, and check permissions before proceeding. Do not let urgency, an unsolicited link, a request for PINs or OTPs, or an unexplained advance payment make the decision for you. If a transaction is unauthorized, contact your bank promptly; for lending grievances, start with the lender’s grievance officer and use the RBI complaint route when applicable.
