Compare fixed deposits (FDs) only after matching the tenure, deposit amount, customer category, payout option and withdrawal rules. A higher advertised rate may not produce the better choice once maturity proceeds, access to your money, deposit-insurance limits and your own tax position are considered. Because bank rates change, check each bank’s official rate sheet and terms on the day you plan to book.
Start with the deposit you actually need
Before looking at rates, write down the conditions an FD must meet. That prevents a headline offer from pulling you toward a tenure, payout schedule or lock-in that does not suit your plans. A comparison is useful only if it answers the question you actually have: which available offer fits this amount, this time horizon and these access needs?

- Amount: Record the amount you intend to place. Banks may use different deposit-size bands, and an offer may apply only to a particular band. Also note your existing deposits at each bank, because the DICGC limit applies to your total eligible exposure at that bank, not just this new FD.
- Target date: Decide when you may need the money, not just how long you are willing to invest. A bank’s rate slabs can change at specific duration boundaries. A few days or months can put an FD into a different slab.
- Customer category: Note whether you qualify for a senior-citizen rate and whether your resident or non-resident status affects the product or eligibility.
- Cash-flow need: Decide whether you need periodic interest payments or can leave interest invested until maturity.
- Access need: Consider whether you might need to withdraw before maturity. If that is possible, treat the withdrawal rule and penalty as part of the offer, not as fine print to check later.
These constraints define the offers worth comparing. If a bank has a special tenure that does not match your target, label it as a different option rather than treating its rate as directly comparable. Similarly, do not assume that a rate available to one customer category or deposit amount is available for yours.
Start by deciding whether your priority is a specific maturity date, regular interest income, or the ability to access money early. Those priorities may point to different products. If you need regular cash flow, for example, compare periodic-payout options with one another. If you can leave the deposit untouched, compare cumulative or reinvestment options with the same terms. The interest figure alone does not describe when you receive money.

Match offers on the same terms
Bank rate sheets are schedules of slabs, not one universal rate. Compare the same amount and duration across banks, and compare like customer categories. Keep payout method and withdrawal terms visible alongside the quoted rate.
| Comparison field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Rate and return basis | Quoted annual interest rate; annualised yield or maturity proceeds, if the bank publishes them | A quoted rate alone does not show the cash amount due at maturity. |
| Tenure | Exact duration and any special-tenure condition | A neighboring duration can fall in a different rate slab. |
| Amount band | The bank’s applicable deposit-size slab | The rate may vary by deposit amount. |
| Depositor eligibility | General or eligible senior-citizen rate, plus relevant residency conditions | Rates and product eligibility can differ by customer category. |
| Payout structure | Cumulative/reinvestment or periodic payout; compounding convention where stated | Offers with different cash-flow patterns should not be judged by the headline rate alone. |
| Withdrawal terms | Callable or non-callable status, availability of premature withdrawal, minimums or lock-in, and penalty calculation | Access to funds can affect the practical value of the return. |
| Protection and tax | Total deposits at that bank, including interest exposure; estimated after-tax cash flow for your circumstances | These affect how much of the balance is insured and what you may retain. |
| Rate-sheet record | Official page, effective date, booking channel and relevant terms | A rate can change between comparison and booking. |
Use the bank’s calculator or maturity schedule to estimate proceeds for the same booking date, amount, tenure and payout option. Check that the calculator inputs match the rate-sheet slab. If you calculate independently, verify the compounding and payout assumptions rather than applying a quoted annual rate as though every product used the same method.
Annual interest rate, annualised yield and maturity proceeds are related but not interchangeable labels. Use the bank’s own definitions and schedule, and write down which figure you are comparing. A maturity estimate is meaningful only when the inputs match: deposit amount, start date, term, customer category and payout type. A calculator output based on a different tenure or reinvestment assumption can make two unlike offers look comparable.
Booking conditions can matter too. Record the channel through which the rate is available and any terms displayed for that channel. A rate shown on a general rate page should not automatically be treated as the rate for every product or booking route; confirm the specific offer and its eligibility at the point of booking.
Check whether the senior-citizen rate applies to you
Do not compare a general-customer rate at one bank with a senior-citizen rate at another. The Reserve Bank of India says banks may offer higher rates to resident senior citizens, and its FAQ notes: “Banks can formulate special fixed deposit schemes specifically for senior citizens offering higher and fixed rates of interest as compared to normal deposits of any size.” The bank’s own terms determine the precise eligibility and rate for a particular offer. See the RBI handbook material and RBI fixed-deposit FAQ.
When recording a senior-citizen offer, capture the eligible depositor category and any conditions shown on the bank’s rate sheet. A rate premium is useful only if the depositor and deposit qualify under those terms. Do not assume that a senior-citizen premium has the same size or eligibility conditions at every bank.
For a fair comparison, make two separate rows if you need to show both general and senior-citizen terms. This avoids accidentally presenting the higher eligible rate as a general rate. If residency or another condition changes eligibility, note that as well rather than relying on a generic label.

Evaluate access to your money, not just the rate
Premature withdrawal can change what you receive if you break an FD before maturity. Check whether withdrawal is permitted, whether a minimum amount or lock-in applies, and exactly how the bank calculates any penalty. Do not assume every FD is freely breakable or that the advertised rate will be paid after an early withdrawal.
The RBI’s October 26, 2023 direction says domestic individual term deposits of ₹1 crore and below must include a premature-withdrawal facility. That requirement does not remove the need to read the bank’s applicable penalty terms. The direction and related policy material are available in the RBI notification and RBI handbook material.
If the bank labels an offer non-callable, confirm what that means for early access before treating its rate as an alternative to a callable deposit. A return you cannot access when needed may not meet your purpose, even if its maturity estimate is higher. Separate the question “What would this pay if held to maturity?” from “What happens if I need the money early?” The second answer depends on the product’s actual terms.
Read the withdrawal rule for the precise deposit you plan to book; do not infer it from another FD at the same bank. Note whether early withdrawal is available, any minimum amount or lock-in, and how the penalty is calculated. Those details are part of the comparison because a deposit that is difficult or costly to exit may not suit a short-notice cash need.
Understand what DICGC insurance does—and does not—cover
DICGC covers eligible deposits, including fixed deposits, up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank for principal and interest combined. The limit is not ₹5 lakh for each branch: balances across branches of the same bank are aggregated when held in the same right and capacity. The limit applies separately at different banks. DICGC lists small finance banks among insured commercial banks. See its FAQ and overview.
For comparison purposes, estimate your total eligible exposure at each bank, not just the new FD: include principal and accrued interest across relevant accounts and branches. A balance above the insurance cap is not covered in full by that cap. Insurance is a defined limit, not a guarantee that every rupee deposited at a bank is insured.
This is especially important when comparing a small finance bank’s rate with another bank’s. The insurance limit does not rise because an offer pays a higher rate or because the deposit is split among branches of the same bank. Consider the size of your total exposure at each institution when deciding how much to place there.

The practical unit to check is the depositor and bank, not the individual FD receipt. If you already hold eligible deposits at the same bank, adding a new FD can increase the amount above the stated cap. Deposits at a different bank have a separate limit, while opening multiple accounts or using multiple branches at the same bank does not multiply the cap for balances held in the same right and capacity.
When asking whether small finance bank FDs are “safe,” distinguish the defined insurance protection from a guarantee of the whole deposit. DICGC’s published materials include small finance banks among insured commercial banks, but the ₹5 lakh cap still applies to principal and interest combined per depositor per bank. That answers what the stated cover limit is; it does not make an above-limit balance insured in full.
Compare the return you may keep after tax
Interest taxation depends on the individual taxpayer and applicable rules. The Income Tax Department guidance reviewed on May 29, 2026 describes a possible section 80TTB deduction for eligible senior citizens and a separate bank-interest threshold for tax deducted at source (TDS). Check the current rules and your personal eligibility using the Income Tax Department guidance.
TDS is tax withheld at source; it does not, by itself, establish your final tax due. For a meaningful comparison, estimate after-tax cash flows for your own situation rather than treating the gross maturity value or withholding amount as the amount you will ultimately retain.
A rate comparison that ignores tax can overstate the difference between two offers or miss what matters for your own cash flow. Keep gross return and estimated after-tax return as separate figures. The result depends on the individual’s circumstances and current rules; the tax guidance’s mention of a possible deduction for eligible senior citizens is not a substitute for checking whether you qualify.

Do not treat the TDS threshold as a tax-free allowance or TDS as a final bill. Withholding is a collection mechanism; final liability depends on the applicable rules and the taxpayer’s position. If tax treatment affects your choice, confirm current guidance and eligibility rather than assuming the same net return for every depositor.
Use dated rates carefully
A dated example shows why the schedule date and customer category belong beside every figure. In the schedule showing rates effective June 10, 2026, Central Bank of India displayed the following for the two-year-to-less-than-three-year duration band:

| Customer category | Quoted rate | Listed annualised yield |
|---|---|---|
| General customers | 6.25% | 6.40% |
| Senior citizens | 6.75% | 6.92% |
These are figures from one bank’s schedule, not a cross-bank survey or a claim about the best offer. The rate page contains schedules with different effective dates, so do not assume these figures were still current on October 9, 2026, or will apply when you book. Check the relevant date and slab on the Central Bank of India deposit-rate page.
The example also illustrates why a rate should be stored with its context. The 6.25% figure is for general customers, while 6.75% is for senior citizens; both apply to the stated two-year-to-under-three-year band in that schedule. The listed annualised yields are separate published figures, not another bank’s rate. Copying one number without the duration, category and effective date can turn a correct figure into a misleading comparison.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen someone asks which bank has the best FD rate for a particular tenure, there is no reliable answer from a single bank’s sheet. A current comparison needs the official schedules of the banks being considered, for the same tenure, amount band, customer type and payout terms, checked near the booking date. A special tenure or senior-citizen rate may be worth investigating, but it should be labelled as such rather than treated as a market-wide winner.

Keep one record for every offer you are considering. A compact worksheet helps expose mismatches before you choose:
- Set the target: Enter your amount, needed maturity date, customer category, residency where relevant, desired payout pattern and likely need for early access.
- Collect official schedules: For each bank, record the rate-sheet URL and effective date. Use the official bank page, not an undated rate copied from a third-party list.
- Match the slab: Confirm that tenure and deposit amount fall within the same kind of band and that the rate is for the correct customer category.
- Record the return basis: Note quoted rate, annualised yield if stated, and the bank’s maturity estimate using identical inputs and a same-date assumption.
- Read the product terms: Record cumulative or periodic payout, callable status, early-withdrawal availability and penalty, plus any booking-channel conditions.
- Check bank-level exposure: Add relevant deposits and interest at that bank across branches to assess how the DICGC cap relates to your total balance.
- Estimate your outcome: Compare the expected after-tax cash flows applicable to you, not just gross interest or TDS.
- Recheck immediately before booking: Rates and terms can change; confirm that the schedule, eligibility and product conditions still match your record.
If one offer cannot be made comparable—for example, it has a different tenure or payout structure—keep it in a separate comparison rather than calling it the winner on the basis of its headline rate. Save the official page or note the relevant rate-sheet details and effective date, so you can check whether the terms have changed when you are ready to book.
In practice, this process answers two distinct questions: which offers match your requirements, and which matched offer produces the return and access terms you prefer. Do not collapse those into a single ranking based only on the highest displayed percentage. Record why an offer is a candidate, what conditions apply, and what still needs to be verified on booking day.

- Comparing different tenures: A special-duration offer may have a different rate from the neighboring duration. Keep it clearly labelled rather than treating it as a direct like-for-like result.
- Mixing customer categories: A senior-citizen rate is not directly comparable with a general-customer rate unless you are eligible for that senior rate.
- Using the rate without the date: Bank pages can show multiple schedules or effective dates. A remembered or copied rate may no longer be available.
- Ignoring payout and maturity basis: Periodic payout and cumulative reinvestment produce different cash-flow patterns. Check the bank’s annualised yield or maturity estimate alongside the quoted rate.
- Assuming early withdrawal is cost-free: A facility to withdraw early does not mean the original advertised return necessarily applies after breaking the FD. Read the penalty terms.
- Counting branches as separate insurance limits: Same-bank balances are aggregated for the same right and capacity. The ₹5 lakh ceiling includes principal and interest and is per depositor per bank.
- Calling TDS your final tax: Withholding and final tax due are different questions. Estimate the after-tax outcome using current rules and your personal eligibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I compare fixed deposit rates across banks?
Match the same tenure, deposit amount band, customer category and payout structure. Then compare the quoted rate with annualised yield or maturity proceeds, withdrawal conditions, bank-level DICGC exposure, estimated after-tax cash flow and the rate sheet’s effective date.

Which bank has the best FD rate for my tenure?
A dated rate sheet for one bank cannot establish a market-wide best offer. Check official rate schedules for the banks you are considering on the booking date and compare matched tenure, amount, eligibility, payout and withdrawal terms.
Are small finance bank FDs safe?
DICGC lists small finance banks among insured commercial banks. Eligible deposits, including FDs, are covered up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank for principal and interest combined. Same-bank branches are aggregated, so the stated cap does not insure an above-limit balance in full.
What should I check before opening an FD?
Confirm the exact rate and effective date, amount and tenure slab, customer eligibility, payout option, maturity estimate, booking conditions, premature-withdrawal availability and penalty. Also check your total deposits at the bank against the DICGC cap and consider your estimated after-tax return.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does an FD rate for senior citizens apply to every depositor?
No. RBI says banks may offer higher rates to resident senior citizens and may formulate special senior-citizen schemes. Check the particular bank’s eligibility rules and compare the senior-citizen rate only if the depositor qualifies.
Does TDS tell me how much tax I ultimately owe on FD interest?
No. TDS is tax withheld at source and does not by itself establish final tax due. Tax depends on the taxpayer and applicable rules; check current guidance and personal eligibility.
The Bottom Line
Choose a comparison set before choosing a rate: match tenure, amount, customer category and payout structure, then weigh maturity proceeds against withdrawal terms, DICGC coverage and your estimated after-tax cash flow. Record the official rate sheet and effective date, and recheck all terms on the day you book. A higher headline rate is not automatically the better fit.
