The Dow Jones Industrial Average tracks 30 selected large U.S. companies and weights them by share price. The Nasdaq Composite covers stocks listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market and weights them by market capitalization. That means the Dow reflects a small, committee-selected group in which a higher-priced stock has more influence, while the Composite reflects a much broader listed-company universe in which larger companies have more influence.

Both are stock-market indexes, but they are not interchangeable readings of the same set of companies. Their different coverage and weighting rules mean they can react differently to the same market conditions. A move in either index describes the movement of that index’s constituents under its own calculation method; it does not, by itself, tell you how every U.S. stock performed.

Why price weighting and market-cap weighting matter
The Dow gives more weight to higher-priced shares
The Dow is price-weighted. In simplified terms, its index level is calculated by adding the prices of the component shares and dividing that sum by a divisor. As a result, a component with a higher share price has more influence than one with a lower share price, even if the lower-priced company is worth more overall.

S&P Dow Jones Indices illustrates the effect with Merck and Visa: in its example, Visa’s share price is twice Merck’s, so Visa receives twice the weight and has twice the impact from the same percentage share-price move. The comparison is about the index’s weighting arithmetic, not a claim about either company’s relative business size or investment merits.

This can feel counterintuitive because a stock’s quoted share price does not, on its own, measure the size of its company. A company can split its shares, changing the per-share price without changing the company’s total value. The Dow’s divisor is adjusted for stock splits and other relevant events so such changes do not create a misleading jump in the index level. The divisor is also adjusted when components change.
The Nasdaq Composite gives more weight to larger companies
The Nasdaq Composite is market-capitalization-weighted. Market capitalization is calculated by multiplying a company’s share price by its shares outstanding. A company with a larger market capitalization therefore contributes more to the index than a smaller company, all else equal.
For interpreting the index, the important comparison is the percentage move in each constituent, not just its share price. If two included companies’ shares rise by the same percentage, the larger company generally has the greater effect on the Composite because it represents a larger portion of the index’s total market value. The weights can change as prices and company values change.

Neither method is a neutral measure of every market participant’s experience. The Dow’s price-based weighting makes the share-price relationship central; the Composite’s capitalization weighting makes company size central. Knowing the rule helps explain why the indexes can diverge even when both are rising or falling over the same period.
What companies and sectors each index represents
The Dow is a small, selected group
The Dow contains 30 selected large U.S. companies. It is intended to measure the performance of some of the largest U.S. companies, not to include every major company or to mirror the entire U.S. stock market. Its constituents span multiple sectors, so the word “Industrial” in the name should not be read as a current restriction to industrial businesses.
Transportation and utilities are represented separately in the Dow Jones Transportation Average and Dow Jones Utility Average, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices. Those are distinct averages; their existence does not mean the Industrial Average is a comprehensive index of every company in those industries.

The Composite follows Nasdaq listing
The Nasdaq Composite covers stocks listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Nasdaq describes it as spanning thousands of companies across sizes and sectors, with a technology emphasis. It also includes financial and other businesses, so “technology-focused” is more accurate than “technology-only.” Its breadth comes from the exchange listing universe rather than a committee choosing a fixed group of 30 blue-chip companies.
Nasdaq is also the name of the stock exchange, and the Nasdaq Composite is not the same index as the Nasdaq-100. The Nasdaq-100 has a different, narrower selection universe. When reading a chart, article, or performance figure, check that it names the Composite if that is the index you intend to assess; figures for the Nasdaq-100 do not automatically describe the Composite.
How the Dow chooses and maintains its components
The Dow’s membership is committee-based, not the result of a strict mechanical ranking such as simply taking the 30 biggest companies. S&P Dow Jones Indices lists reputation, sustained growth, investor interest, and sector representation among the considerations. These factors help explain why the index is a selected group rather than a complete market census.

The committee reviews components as needed and may make changes in response to market developments or corporate actions. The methodology does not prescribe an annual or semi-annual reconstitution. Therefore, a company’s presence in the Dow should not be read as a permanent guarantee of membership, nor should a change in its lineup be mistaken for a routine scheduled rebalance.
The divisor is important when the lineup changes. Since the Dow’s level is based on the sum of component share prices divided by the divisor, replacing one component with another could otherwise create an artificial jump simply because the new stock has a different share price. Adjusting the divisor preserves continuity around a replacement or relevant corporate action; it does not erase the actual market movement of the companies’ shares.

Where the indexes came from
The Dow began calculating a daily average in May 1896 with 12 industrial stocks and later expanded to 30. Its historic name reflects that origin, even though its current purpose is not limited to industrial companies.

The Nasdaq Composite was established in 1971. It represents a different organizing idea: a broad index of stocks listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, rather than a small, committee-selected list. The two indexes’ histories help explain why their names and coverage differ, but age alone does not make one a better measure for every question.
How to interpret a Dow-versus-Composite comparison
Choose the index that fits the question
- For a snapshot of selected large U.S. companies: the Dow offers a compact, recognizable group, but its 30 constituents and price weighting are important limitations to keep in mind.
- For a broader view of Nasdaq-listed stocks: the Composite covers a much larger range of companies, while its market-cap weighting means the largest companies have greater influence.
- For a sector-specific question: neither index should be treated as a pure measure of one sector. The Composite has a technology emphasis but includes other sectors, and the Dow spans multiple sectors.
These are differences in what each index measures, not recommendations to buy an index fund or any individual stock. An index is a benchmark calculation; investing in a product that tracks an index is a separate decision involving the product’s design, costs, and risks.
Make performance comparisons like-for-like
Comparing the two index levels directly is not meaningful. Each index uses its own calculation base and, for the Dow, a divisor; a higher quoted point level does not mean the index or its constituents are more valuable or have performed better. To compare performance, use the same start and end dates and make sure both series measure the same kind of return.
A price-return series reflects price changes. A total-return comparison also accounts for reinvested dividends. Those measures answer different questions, so state which one is being used. A comparison without a common period and a clear return definition can mislead even if both figures are accurate.
Constituent counts beyond the Dow’s fixed 30, current membership, weights, index levels, and returns can change. A claim about the Composite’s exact number of constituents or either index’s current largest components should be tied to a dated provider snapshot, rather than treated as a lasting property of the index.
