To sign up to drive for Lyft, apply through Lyft’s driver website or the Lyft Driver app, submit your personal and vehicle information, upload the documents required where you plan to drive, and consent to the required background and driving-history checks. Requirements differ by market, so check Lyft’s page for your city before you apply.
How do you apply to become a Lyft driver?
- Start through Lyft. Create an account at lyft.com/drivers or in the Lyft Driver app. Lyft asks for information such as your name, phone number, and email address. Application information is saved if you sign out, according to Lyft’s application instructions.
- Check the rules for your city. Use Lyft’s local requirements page to confirm the age, license, driving experience, vehicle, inspection, and document rules that apply to your market. Some markets specify that you must complete the application in the app.
- Submit your driver and vehicle details. If you plan to use your own car, provide the requested insurance and registration documents. Upload proof of inspection, a driver profile photo, permits, or other records if your local page requires them.
- Consent to screening. Lyft requires consent for a criminal background check and driving-history review. Lyft says this is not a credit check.
- Track your status. Check your application and screening status at lyft.com/drivers. Follow Lyft’s instructions if it requests more information.
- Follow the post-approval instructions. Once approved, use the Lyft Driver app to go online and follow Lyft’s current directions about keeping the Lyft emblem and required documents in your car.
What are Lyft’s driver requirements?
Lyft’s general U.S. driver page lists a baseline age requirement of 25 or older, a criminal background check and driving-history review, and—if you use your own car—insurance and registration. It also describes a four-door vehicle or a rental through Express Drive. Lyft says vehicle requirements vary by region and that inspections are required in some regions. These are general published requirements, not a substitute for your city’s rules. See Lyft’s driver requirements and select your market.
Requirements can differ by city
Lyft’s current city pages illustrate why it is important to verify locally. These examples are not a complete list of markets:

Can you sign up without your own car?
Possibly. Lyft lists Express Drive as a rental option in select cities, but it is not available everywhere. Check whether it is offered in your market and review the rental conditions Lyft presents during signup. The available information does not establish a general rental price or support a cost comparison with owning a car.

If you use your own vehicle, expect to provide insurance and registration and check whether your market requires an inspection. A rental does not remove the need to meet Lyft’s local driver and vehicle rules.
How long does Lyft’s application take?
Lyft says background checks can take several weeks because multiple agencies may be involved. The reviewed instructions do not promise a universal end-to-end approval time. Check your status at lyft.com/drivers rather than relying on a fixed timeline.
