How Many Views on Instagram Reels Do You Need to Get Paid?

There is no universal view count that guarantees payment on Instagram Reels. Meta’s documented plays-based bonus was invite-only and time-limited; other earning routes work differently.

There is no universal Instagram Reels view count that guarantees payment. Meta has described a limited, invite-only bonus that paid eligible creators based partly on Reels plays, but that was a time-limited program—not a standard rate or automatic threshold for every creator. Gifts, Subscriptions, and brand partnerships are separate ways to earn, and none is activated by a published view count.

Does Instagram pay for Reels views?

Not automatically. A Reel can get a large number of views without creating an entitlement to money from Instagram. The view-based route documented by Meta was a limited bonus program that required an invitation and eligible content.

In its November 6, 2023 announcement, updated April 3, 2024, Meta described an invite-only bonus test in the United States, South Korea, and Japan. Invited creators could earn based on Reels plays and photo views during the bonus period, provided their content met Meta’s Content Monetization Policies. Meta’s wording was: “Creators will earn based on the number of reels plays and photo views they receive during the bonus period, as long as the content passes Content Monetization Policies.” The announcement does not establish a fixed payment per view or a minimum number of views that qualifies everyone.

That program is dated history, not evidence that the bonus is currently open to all creators. Earlier bonus announcements likewise described programs as evolving and sometimes invite-only; they should not be treated as current, universal eligibility rules.

How can you earn from Instagram Reels?

Reels can help attract viewers, but the available earning routes work differently. The distinction matters: only the historical bonus described by Meta linked earnings directly to plays, while other routes depend on gifts, subscribers, or brand agreements.

Route What funds the creator Is payment tied directly to views? Access or eligibility described by Meta
Reels bonus Meta bonus program Yes, for eligible plays during a bonus period The cited 2023–2024 test was invite-only and limited to the United States, South Korea, and Japan. Meta’s announcement
Gifts Viewers purchasing Stars and sending virtual gifts No published automatic per-view payment Meta’s November 2023 announcement listed a professional account, age over 18, policy compliance, and at least 5,000 followers as criteria; country availability and account eligibility also matter. Meta’s announcement
Subscriptions Paying subscribers No; income is associated with recurring subscriptions and exclusive content or experiences Meta describes Subscriptions as a recurring-income option; the cited announcement does not give a Reels-view threshold. Meta’s announcement
Brand partnerships A brand or business partner No published automatic per-view payment Branded content and partnership ads are ways creators work with brands; compensation depends on the arrangement, not a universal Instagram view threshold. Meta’s announcement

What are Instagram Gifts and their requirements?

With Gifts, viewers purchase Stars in Instagram and send virtual gifts to creators. Meta’s February 8, 2023 explanation says creators can check whether they are eligible in the Instagram Professional Dashboard.

Meta’s November 2023 announcement listed these Gifts criteria:

  • A professional Instagram account.
  • Age over 18.
  • Compliance with Partner Monetization Policies.
  • At least 5,000 followers.

Those are published criteria from 2023, not a general requirement for all Instagram earnings or a Reels view threshold. Availability also depends on country and may change, so use the Professional Dashboard to check your account’s current status.

Do Subscriptions or sponsorships require a certain number of views?

Meta’s description of Subscriptions focuses on creators offering exclusive content and experiences in exchange for recurring income. A subscriber’s payment—not a Reel’s view count—is the relevant source of that income. Meta also identifies branded content and partnership ads as ways to work with brands. A brand agreement may take reach into account, but the cited sources do not establish a standard view requirement or payment rate.

In November 2023, Meta reported more than 1 million active Instagram subscriptions across the platform. That is a dated platform-wide figure, not an estimate of what an individual creator can earn.

How do you check whether your account can monetize?

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
  2. Open the Professional Dashboard.
  3. Review the monetization or Gifts eligibility information shown for your account. Meta specifically directs creators to the dashboard to check Gifts eligibility.
  4. If a feature is unavailable, check its country availability and the applicable monetization policies. An older announcement or another creator’s access does not establish that the feature is available to your account now.

The sources cited here do not determine any individual account’s current eligibility. Instagram’s in-app dashboard is the relevant account-specific check.

What should you expect from a Reel’s view count?

  • A viral Reel does not by itself guarantee payment from Instagram.
  • The documented plays-based bonus required an invitation and applied during a limited bonus period; Meta did not publish a universal minimum view count or standard rate per thousand views.
  • Gifts, Subscriptions, and partnerships can provide other income, but they depend on their own eligibility or commercial arrangements—not an automatic view threshold.
