These are guide estimates, not guaranteed prices for a particular home. Your dependable price is the written quote after an in-home inspection.
Home Depot’s estimated replacement prices
The figures below come from The Home Depot’s Water Heater Replacement Cost Guide, accessed October 8, 2026. The retrieved guide text does not show a publication date, so treat the ranges as current published estimates rather than a promise of what installation will cost locally.

These are estimated replacement totals, not labor-only charges. The tankless range is higher, but the right option depends on the home, the equipment selected, and what work is needed to connect it.
What the estimate includes
The cost guide says its estimates include the heater, permits, installation materials, labor by a local licensed and insured plumber, and removal of the old unit. The Home Depot installation service page describes a standard replacement in the same unobstructed area as including:

The published estimate assumes replacement. Buying a heater separately and arranging installation, moving it to a different location, or changing system type can alter the work and the quote. Home Depot says an in-home consultation for a replacement that includes the product covers the equipment cost; customers may also purchase the heater in advance and request installation separately.
Why your final price may differ
System type and conversion
A tank-to-tankless change or a fuel-source conversion can require additional work. Home Depot notes that locating a tankless unit near existing water and fuel sources may reduce extra labor.

Permits and code requirements
Permit fees vary by state, city, and municipality. Home Depot says permits are required for most replacements, and upgrades needed to meet code can add charges. Existing plumbing, venting, electrical, gas, or water connections may need work. Components such as expansion tanks, drain pans, venting, and drain lines are among the items its service page identifies in price-match comparisons; they are not automatically required in every home.
Equipment and site conditions
The guide lists heater size, efficiency, warranty length, and features as cost factors. The condition and layout of the installation site also matter, which is why a nationwide range cannot substitute for an inspection and local quote.

How to get a quote you can compare
Home Depot’s process starts with a free consultation with a local authorized provider, followed by an in-home site inspection and a final quote. The company says no work begins until you review and approve that quote. Before signing, make sure each quote identifies the same scope:
- Heater make and model, capacity, fuel type, and features.
- Equipment price, labor, installation materials, and removal or haul-away.
- Permit costs and any code-related additions, including required connection work.
- Warranty terms and any conversion or relocation work.
Home Depot’s price-match conditions compare equivalent capacity and features, plumbing and code-compliance components, warranty terms, and permit expense. The page says written or email quotes from licensed and insured plumbing contractors may qualify before signing or within 30 days after installation, subject to eligibility rules and exclusions. Confirm the current terms with the service provider before relying on a match.

How long installation takes and what service terms to confirm
Home Depot says a typical installation takes two to three hours, depending on the existing and replacement units. A tank-to-tankless replacement takes somewhat longer; a tankless-to-tankless replacement may take one to three hours. Installation can usually be completed in one day. Same-day service may be available Monday through Friday when requested before noon and within 30 miles of a store, but availability is not universal.
The service page describes free delivery and haul-away and labor coverage for up to three years. Ask the local provider to confirm the applicable warranty and exactly what is included in your written quote.
