Shop from a web address you can verify independently, not simply from an advertisement or the first search result. Before paying, confirm who the seller is, compare the complete delivered cost, read the sale-item return terms, and use a payment method that gives you a realistic dispute path. HTTPS encrypts the connection but does not prove that a store is genuine. Keep the order evidence and act quickly if the seller misses its promise.
This guide reflects U.S. consumer guidance from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Shipping rules, card-dispute rights, marketplace protections, and reporting options can differ in other countries.

How can I tell if an online sale website is fake?
No single badge, padlock, review score, or low price proves that a store is safe. Use several independent checks before entering payment details. The safest starting point is a retailer address you already know or can confirm outside the advertisement that brought you there.
Start with a verified web address
Paid search placements can imitate a real company or show a fraudulent telephone number and website. The FTC says scammers sometimes buy search ads using another business’s name or misleading wording. Type a known retailer’s address into your browser yourself. If you do not know the address, check unpaid search results and other reliable references, then compare the domain and contact details with the site you are considering.

For an unfamiliar seller, search the seller’s name and the exact URL supplied by the ad with terms such as review, complaint, and scam. Treat a result that appears only in an advertisement as unverified. The FTC’s warning about deceptive search results is at Online search results: The good, the bad, and the scammy.
Confirm who is actually selling the item
A marketplace page may involve the marketplace operator, an individual seller, and a separate party handling fulfillment. Identify the legal or displayed seller name, the contact route, and who makes refund decisions. A familiar marketplace logo does not by itself tell you whether the particular listing qualifies for buyer protection.
Check contact information and independent signals
Look for a usable way to ask a product or delivery question before ordering. Search recent feedback across multiple sources rather than relying on a star average. Reviews can be fabricated, incentivized, misleading, or maliciously negative, so look for consistent details about delivery, condition, refunds, and communication. A lack of credible independent information is a reason to pause, not proof of fraud.
Is HTTPS enough to know a shopping site is safe?
No. HTTPS encrypts data traveling between your browser and the website. It does not certify the site’s ownership, honesty, inventory, or refund practices. A fraudulent shop can obtain encryption and display the same padlock as a legitimate retailer.
Use HTTPS as a minimum transmission safeguard while checking the domain, seller identity, pricing, terms, and payment demands. The FTC states: “The ‘s’ after http means the site is encrypted — but it doesn’t mean it’s a legitimate site.” Read its Online Shopping guidance for the full consumer checklist.
How do I check the seller and the item before buying?
Read the listing beyond the headline
Compare the model number, size, color, included accessories, condition, and photos with the manufacturer’s description or another established seller’s listing. Words such as refurbished, used, as is, and close-out can mean the item is not new or may have limited remedies. Stock photography alone does not establish that the seller possesses the item or accurately shows its condition.

Ask who handles problems
Before checkout, determine whether the seller, marketplace, or payment processor receives a return request. Note the procedure for an item that never arrives, arrives damaged, or differs materially from the description. Marketplace deadlines and remedies vary by platform, seller, and item; the FTC explains the questions to ask in Buying From an Online Marketplace.

- The seller name, domain, email address, and checkout entity should make sense together.
- The item description should match the photographs, model number, and stated condition.
- The promised delivery date should be plausible for the seller’s location and fulfillment method.
- Support should answer reasonable questions without pushing you to an unrelated payment channel.
Is this deal too good to be true?
A low headline price is meaningful only after you calculate the complete transaction. Compare the same make and model, not merely a similar-looking product, and include every cost that appears before payment.

For expensive brand-name goods, an unusually low price can indicate a counterfeit or stolen item. Check whether the seller requires an add-on, a membership, or acceptance of a different condition to obtain the advertised price. Ask whether the store offers a price adjustment if its own price drops after you buy.
The FTC reported that online shopping scams were the second-most reported scam type in 2022. What sale terms should I read before checkout?
Returns and refunds
Find the return window and start date. Confirm whether the clock begins on purchase, shipment, or delivery. Check who pays return shipping, whether a restocking fee applies, and whether clearance, open-box, final-sale, or personalized items are excluded. Save a copy of the policy as it appeared when you ordered.

Record the advertised shipping or arrival date, including any “business day” wording. Under the FTC’s U.S. online-shopping guidance, a seller must ship as promised. If it made no shipping-time promise, the guidance generally says the seller must ship within 30 days after receiving your name, address, and payment or permission to charge. This is U.S.-specific guidance; do not assume the same deadline applies elsewhere.

Price adjustments and substitutions
Read whether the seller may substitute a product, split an order, or charge separately for back-ordered items. If a price-match or post-purchase adjustment is advertised, note the eligibility period and exclusions. A verbal promise in chat is useful evidence only if you preserve the message and can identify the seller who made it.
Which payment method is safest?
The FTC recommends a credit card when possible because eligible billing errors can be disputed through the card issuer. A dispute is not automatic reimbursement: eligibility depends on the transaction and applicable rules, and you must follow the issuer’s instructions.
Be cautious when a seller dictates hard-to-recover payment
Do not proceed when a seller insists on a gift card, wire transfer, payment app, or cryptocurrency. These methods can make it difficult to reverse a payment or identify a responsible merchant. A seller that refuses a normal card checkout or pressures you to act immediately adds a serious risk signal.

If a marketplace’s protection requires on-platform payment, moving to a private transfer can eliminate that protection. Do not let a seller’s message or a promised discount persuade you to bypass the marketplace checkout. The FTC discusses these marketplace payment risks in Buying From an Online Marketplace.
Understand the U.S. card-dispute timing
For certain billing errors described by the FTC—including merchandise not received, a duplicate charge, or a wrong or defective item—the agency’s online-shopping page advises contacting the issuer promptly and describes a 60-day written-notice period for the applicable protections. The exact rule depends on the transaction and card terms. Contact the issuer as soon as you identify the problem, ask which documentation it requires, and do not wait until the deadline is near.

- the company or seller name and exact website address;
- the item description, model number, condition, and photographs;
- the advertised price, shipping promise, taxes, fees, and final amount;
- the return, refund, and sale-exception terms;
- the order or confirmation number;
- the payment statement entry;
- emails, chat messages, tracking information, and any promised resolution.
Taking a screenshot of dynamic terms can preserve what you saw at checkout. Keep the files until the return period, delivery window, and any card-dispute period have passed.

A safe online-sale checkout sequence
- Navigate independently. Type a known retailer address, or verify the exact ad destination through unpaid results and independent references.
- Inspect the seller. Identify who sells the item, who fulfills it, and who handles refunds. Search the name and exact URL with “review,” “complaint,” and “scam.”
- Validate the product. Match the model number, specifications, condition, accessories, and images. Treat stock photos and vague descriptions as incomplete evidence.
- Calculate the delivered total. Add shipping, handling, tax, and every fee. Check whether the price depends on an add-on or different condition.
- Read the remedy terms. Note return days, return postage, restocking fees, final-sale exceptions, delivery promise, and marketplace deadlines.
- Choose a protected payment route. Prefer a credit card when available. Keep marketplace payments on the platform and reject demands for gift cards, wires, payment apps, or cryptocurrency.
- Save evidence. Preserve the listing, terms, confirmation, payment record, and communications before you leave the site.
- Monitor delivery. Compare tracking and arrival against the stated promise, and contact the seller promptly when something changes.
What should I do if my online order never arrives?
First, verify the promise and status
Compare the current tracking record with the delivery date you saved. Check whether the seller split the order or issued a back-order notice. Contact the seller through the address or platform used for the purchase and request a specific delivery date or a refund. Keep the message and the response.
Escalate through the marketplace when applicable
If the transaction occurred on a marketplace, open its case within the stated deadline. Submit the listing, confirmation, tracking, messages, and the marketplace’s required evidence. Do not close the case merely because the seller promises to resolve it privately.
Contact the card issuer promptly
If the seller does not resolve an eligible non-delivery or other billing error, ask the card issuer how to dispute the charge and where to send written notice. Supply the order record and your attempts to resolve the problem. The issuer’s process and deadlines control the dispute.
Report suspected fraud
When the seller appears deceptive, disappears, or demands a suspicious payment method, report the conduct to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Reporting does not guarantee recovery, but it gives investigators information about patterns and repeat operators. If you used another payment service, notify that provider as well and ask whether any recovery step remains available.

What if the item is wrong, defective, or counterfeit?
Photograph the package, shipping label, item, serial or model markings, and any damage before returning it. Compare the received product with the saved listing and description. Request the remedy promised by the seller or marketplace, and follow its return instructions so you do not lose eligibility. If the seller supplied a materially different or defective item and the charge qualifies as a billing error, contact the card issuer without delay.

Do not discard packaging, accessories, or written communications until the dispute is complete. If you suspect a counterfeit or stolen product, avoid reselling it and report the seller through the marketplace and the FTC.
How do seasonal promotions and social-media ads change the risk?
Holiday and flash-sale pressure shortens the time people spend checking a seller. A countdown timer, “one left” message, or social-media endorsement is marketing, not proof of inventory or legitimacy. Open a separate browser tab and repeat the independent-address, seller, total-cost, and terms checks before paying.
When an ad features a familiar brand at an unusually low price, search both the seller’s name and the exact destination URL. A social platform’s approval of an advertisement does not guarantee the advertiser’s identity or fulfillment. The FTC’s November 2025 consumer alert, How to avoid an online shopping scam this holiday season, specifically warns about sellers demanding irreversible payment methods.
Warning signs that should stop the purchase
- The domain or contact details do not match the business you intended to visit.
- The only credible-looking presence is a paid ad, copied social post, or a cluster of identical reviews.
- The item is dramatically cheaper without a clear explanation of condition, warranty, or fulfillment.
- The listing uses stock images but gives little model, condition, or seller information.
- Return rules are hidden, final-sale language appears only at checkout, or the seller refuses to state who pays return shipping.
- The seller pressures you to leave the marketplace or pay by gift card, wire, payment app, or cryptocurrency.
- Support will not answer basic questions about delivery, refunds, or the legal seller.
One warning sign may have an innocent explanation; several together justify leaving the page and finding the item through a verifiable route.
U.S. limits to keep in mind
The FTC pages linked in this article are U.S. consumer guidance. The 30-day default shipping guidance, the described 60-day written-notice card protection, marketplace remedies, and FTC reporting route should not be presented as universal rights. Consumers elsewhere should check their card issuer, marketplace terms, and national consumer-protection authority.
