To set up a cryptocurrency wallet, first decide whether you want an exchange to hold the keys or want to manage them yourself. Then choose a wallet that supports your exact asset and network, create it through the provider’s official source, secure its recovery method, and verify the network before receiving funds. A wallet does not hold coins in the way a physical wallet holds cash: it provides access to them on a blockchain.
Choose who will control the keys
A custodial exchange account and a self-custody wallet work differently. With a custodial account, the platform manages the keys and you recover access through its account-recovery process. With self-custody, you control the keys and are responsible for protecting the recovery method. Neither arrangement is right for everyone; the trade-off is between relying on a provider for access and taking on more responsibility yourself. Coinbase explains the distinction in its guide to exchanges and self-custody wallets.
| Arrangement | Who controls the keys? | How access is recovered | Physical device needed to approve transactions? | Asset and network support |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Custodial exchange account | The platform manages the keys. | Through the platform’s account-recovery process. | No separate signing device is specified by the cited source. | Check the platform’s current supported assets and networks. |
| Software self-custody wallet | You control the keys. | Depends on the wallet and setup; it may use a recovery phrase or another access method. | Not generally required for a software wallet. | Check the wallet’s supported assets and networks before creating or funding it. |
| Hardware-assisted self-custody | You control the keys, with a hardware device used for signing. | Follow the device maker’s backup and recovery instructions. | Yes; the device is used for physical transaction approval. | Check the device, companion app, and wallet’s supported assets and networks. |
Wallet support differs by asset and network, so confirm that the exact combination you intend to use is supported. Ethereum.org’s wallet guidance describes wallet options and creating an Ethereum account.
How to set up a self-custody wallet
- Identify the asset and network. Decide what you need to receive or manage. For example, Bitcoin and Ether use different networks; an address for one should not be assumed to work for the other.
- Choose a compatible wallet. Check the provider’s current support information for the asset and network, and confirm the wallet works with your device or operating system.
- Get the wallet from its official source. Use the provider’s official website or the relevant app store, reached through the provider’s official site. Avoid lookalike downloads and unsolicited links.
- Start the create-wallet flow. Follow the wallet’s on-screen steps. The exact labels and recovery setup vary, so use the wallet provider’s current instructions rather than assuming every wallet has the same process.
- Secure the recovery method. If the wallet provides a recovery phrase, record it privately and keep it offline in a secure place. Do not share it with anyone, including someone claiming to be support.
- Use the wallet’s receive function. Select the intended asset and network, then verify that the sender will use the same asset and network before sharing the receiving details.
For an Ethereum wallet, Ethereum.org explains the account and wallet distinction and outlines wallet use in its step-by-step wallet guide. Follow the instructions for the particular wallet you select; menus and supported features can change.

Protect the recovery phrase and understand recovery
A recovery phrase can restore access to a self-custody wallet, which makes it a powerful secret. MetaMask warns: “Anyone who can access your SRP can control your wallet.” Its guidance on securing a Secret Recovery Phrase and password explains that a password may only unlock a local wallet instance, depending on the setup. In a phrase-based setup, the phrase may be needed to recover after a forgotten password; MetaMask cannot restore a wallet if the recovery phrase or another required access method is lost.
- Keep a phrase-based backup offline and out of view.
- Never enter or disclose it in response to an unsolicited message, call, or support request.
- Do not assume a wallet password is a backup; check how the selected wallet’s recovery process works.
- Follow that wallet’s own backup instructions. Bitcoin.org notes that many modern deterministic Bitcoin wallets use one recovery phrase to restore past and future addresses, but backup needs vary by wallet.
For Bitcoin, read the selected wallet’s instructions and Bitcoin.org’s guidance on securing a wallet. A backup method that works for one wallet may not be suitable for another.

When a hardware wallet may make sense
A hardware wallet is an optional device used to keep keys offline and approve transactions through physical interaction. It can add a layer between an online interface and the keys, but it does not remove the need to protect the recovery method or verify transaction details. MetaMask describes hardware-wallet use in its hardware wallet user guide.
If you choose one, obtain it through the device maker’s official channel and use the maker’s initialization and backup instructions. Check that the device, companion software, and wallet support the asset and network you intend to use. Ledger’s Bitcoin wallet setup information, for example, describes pairing a Ledger device with the Ledger Wallet app and adding a Bitcoin account; it is the manufacturer’s guidance, not an independent product ranking.

Check the network before receiving crypto
Always confirm both the asset and network with the sender before a transfer. Ethereum.org notes that a wallet may use the same address across EVM-compatible blockchains when it supports those chains, but that does not make every network interchangeable. Bitcoin uses separate network rules and address formats. An address that looks familiar is not proof that the selected network is correct.
- Open the wallet’s receive screen and select the intended asset.
- Confirm the network shown by the wallet.
- Ask the sender to use that same asset and network.
- Compare the destination details before the sender submits the transfer.
See Ethereum.org’s explanation of using wallets and networks for the Ethereum context. Do not send funds until the destination and network have been checked.

Common setup mistakes to avoid
- Downloading an imitation wallet: start from the provider’s official site or its linked app-store listing.
- Choosing a wallet without checking support: verify the exact asset and network, not just the wallet’s general branding.
- Confusing a password with a recovery backup: understand what restores the wallet if the app or device is lost.
- Sharing a recovery phrase: anyone who obtains it may be able to control the wallet.
- Sending on the wrong network: confirm network compatibility with the recipient before transferring.
