How to Set Up Ad Blocking Recovery in Google AdSense

Ad blocking recovery requires both a site tag and a separately configured AdSense message. Follow the setup sequence and understand the display and draft options.

To set up ad blocking recovery in AdSense, first add the recovery tag to your site, then create and publish a recovery message in AdSense. These are separate steps: installing the tag alone does not show visitors a message. You can also save the message as a draft to begin collecting ad-blocker detection and reporting data without displaying it.

1. Add the ad blocking recovery tag to your site

In AdSense, go to Privacy & messaging → Ad blocking recovery → Tagging and copy the recovery tag. Place it between the opening <head> and closing </head> tags in your site’s HTML. Google says the tag must be installed before a recovery message can be displayed. See Google’s instructions for tagging sites.

Google also provides optional error-protection code that can show a message if an ad-blocking extension prevents a visitor from accessing the site.

For WordPress sites using Site Kit

If you use Google’s official Site Kit plugin, its AdSense integration can deploy the tag without manual code edits. You still need to create and publish the recovery message in AdSense; Site Kit handles tag placement, not the message setup. See Google’s Site Kit instructions.

2. Create the message and select sites

In AdSense, open Privacy & messaging → Ad blocking recovery, choose Create message, select the relevant sites, and confirm. The message is configured separately from the tag.

Set page coverage with URL rules

URL rules are optional. With no page inclusions, the message can apply across the site, including subdomains. Adding inclusions limits the message to pages that match those rules; exclusions then override inclusions. Google allows up to five inclusions or exclusions in total per domain. A tagged page view may still count toward the ad blocking rate even when an exclusion prevents the message from appearing. See Google’s ad blocking recovery message setup guidance.

Choose languages

Set a default language and add any other languages the site supports. AdSense uses the default if it cannot determine the visitor’s device language or the detected language does not adequately match an additional language you selected.

3. Choose the message and its display

The message can include your site logo and an Allow ads button. That button asks visitors to adjust their ad-blocker settings and closes the message; it does not automatically allowlist your site. Google describes the message options in its AdSense help and Site Kit help.

Choice What it means Consideration
Centered, dismissible modal A prominent overlay that visitors can close. Interrupts reading more than a bottom-pinned message.
Centered, non-dismissible modal A prominent overlay visitors cannot dismiss. Not available for the “Allow ads or dismiss” message type.
Dismissible, bottom-pinned message A message attached to the bottom of the screen that visitors can close. Less obstructive than a centered overlay.

When Custom Choice makes sense

Custom Choice can present an alternative you provide, such as subscribing to the site. It is not a built-in subscription service: before publishing, you must implement the googlefc.controlledMessagingFunction function from the Funding Choices API. If that function is not implemented, do not select Custom Choice as though AdSense will supply the alternative for you. See Google’s message setup guidance and Site Kit help.

4. Review account settings, then publish or save a draft

Give the message a descriptive internal name and, if needed, edit its text and appearance. Before publishing your first ad blocking recovery message, review your account settings and make a decision in the For Acceptable Ads users section, as Google instructs.

Choose Publish to display the message, or save it as a draft. With the tag installed and a recovery message in Draft, Google says AdSense can detect ad blockers and generate reporting metrics even though visitors do not see the unpublished message. See Google’s tagging instructions.

What this setup does—and does not—tell you

Ad blocking recovery is an account-and-site setup, not a guarantee of recovered revenue. Google’s setup documentation does not establish a typical recovery rate or revenue gain for an individual publisher, so results should be judged from your own account reporting rather than assumed in advance.

Google’s Ad Manager documentation says recovery messages are available on websites viewed in desktop browsers, not in mobile apps or on mobile-browser websites, and notes that one-click allowlisting support has ended. That guidance is for Ad Manager, so confirm behavior in your own AdSense account rather than treating the limitation as universal to AdSense. See Google Ad Manager’s recovery message guidance.
