Set a stop where the price would show that your trade premise is wrong, then size the position so a move from entry to that stop fits your predefined loss limit. Use a separate price alert when you want a prompt to review the plan rather than an automatic order. No stop distance or alert buffer works for every security, strategy, or holding period—and a stop price is a trigger, not a guaranteed sale price.
Start with the trade premise, not a percentage
A stop-loss level is most useful when it answers a specific question: at what price would the reason for entering this trade no longer hold? That level depends on the security, the trade’s time frame, and the premise behind the position. Choosing an arbitrary percentage first can put the stop inside ordinary price movement, or so far away that the potential loss exceeds what you intended to risk.

Write down three things before entering: why you are taking the trade, how long you expect to hold it, and what price condition would show that your premise is wrong. The condition might relate to a price level important to the plan. It should not be a number chosen simply because it feels comfortable or matches a generic rule.

Indeed, a stop needs to be placed at a logical level, where it will tell you if you’re wrong about the direction of the trade.” This is planning guidance, not a regulator rule, an assurance against being stopped out, or a guarantee of trading results.

Account for ordinary movement over your holding period
A price can briefly move against a position and then rebound. Before selecting a stop, consider how much the instrument normally moves over the period relevant to your trade. A level that might make sense for a longer-term position may be too close for a short-term trade, or vice versa. The goal is not to find a level that can never be touched; it is to distinguish a move that invalidates the premise from movement the plan can reasonably accommodate.
Use a consistent method to assess movement and apply it to the time frame you intend to hold. For example, you might examine comparable historical price movement over that period and record how you assessed it. The method should be repeatable and understandable. There is no universally established volatility indicator, multiplier, chart interval, or extra buffer that guarantees a stop will avoid ordinary market noise. Treat any such measure as one input to your judgment, not an official standard.
A stop also does not make a trade safe merely because the price looks logically placed. If the distance to a defensible stop is too large for your loss limit, the position may need to be smaller—or the trade may not fit your plan.
Calculate position size from the planned loss
Decide the maximum dollar loss you are willing to plan for before you enter. Then relate that amount to the distance between the entry price and stop price. For a simple share position, the basic estimate is:

Approximate share count = planned dollar risk ÷ dollars at risk per share
For a long position, dollars at risk per share is approximately entry price minus stop price. For a short position, it is approximately stop price minus entry price. This calculation estimates the loss if the position exits at the stop; it is not a guarantee of the realized loss. Gaps, slippage, fees, and other execution effects can make the actual result different.
Illustrative share calculation
Suppose, purely as a hypothetical example, a plan allows a $200 loss and a share position would enter at $50 with a stop at $46. The planned distance is $4 per share. Dividing $200 by $4 gives 50 shares before accounting for fees, slippage, or the possibility that an execution occurs beyond the stop. The example is arithmetic, not a recommended risk amount or stop distance.
Recommended Free Tools
If the same planned loss must cover a wider entry-to-stop distance, the position generally needs to be smaller. That is the practical link between the trade thesis and risk: do not move a stop closer solely to justify a larger position if doing so puts it where ordinary movement could trigger it. Reconsider the size instead.

Futures and other contract-based positions
For futures, a price move must be converted using the contract’s tick size and tick value, then multiplied by the number of contracts. Contract specifications differ, so use the applicable contract details rather than the share formula alone. CME Group’s position-sizing education uses this kind of calculation; a futures example cannot be transferred unchanged to shares or another instrument.
Choose an order type with its trade-off understood
A stop order, stop-limit order, and trailing stop handle execution differently. A price alert is different again: it sends a notification under the platform’s rules but is not itself a protective order.
| Mechanism | What happens when its condition is met | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stop order | When the stop trigger is reached, a conventional stop order becomes a market order. | It prioritizes execution after triggering, but the fill can differ materially from the stop price, especially in a fast-moving or illiquid market. |
| Stop-limit order | When triggered, it becomes a limit order that can execute only at the limit price or better. | It constrains the acceptable price, but can remain unfilled if the market moves past the limit. |
| Trailing stop | The trigger follows a favorable price move by a specified dollar amount or percentage and stays fixed when the price moves adversely. | It can still be triggered by short-term fluctuations. Trigger conventions vary by broker or venue. |
| Price alert | The platform sends a notification when its configured price condition occurs, subject to the platform’s features. | It prompts a review but does not place a protective order. Alert behavior and notification frequency are platform-specific. |
Stop orders: the trigger is not the fill
For a conventional stop order, reaching the stop price triggers a market order; it does not promise a sale at that price. If the market moves quickly, trades thinly, or opens beyond the stop after a gap, the execution may be at a substantially different price. This matters when estimating risk: the entry-to-stop calculation is a plan, not a hard cap on what you can lose.
Stop-limit orders: price control can mean no execution
A stop-limit order combines a stop trigger with a limit on the price you will accept. That limit can prevent an execution at a worse price than permitted, but it cannot force a buyer or seller to transact at your limit. If the market moves past it, the order may remain open and the position may continue to lose value. The decision is a trade-off between price control and the chance of getting out.

Trailing stops: a moving trigger still reacts to price
A trailing stop adjusts its trigger as the price moves favorably, by a specified dollar amount or percentage. If price moves against the position, the trigger does not follow it farther away. A trailing stop can help implement a plan to follow favorable movement, but short-term fluctuations can still reach the trigger. It is not a way to eliminate noise or guarantee a particular exit price.
Use alerts for review, not as invisible protection
If you want to reassess a position before an order threshold is reached, set a separate notification alert at a level that prompts you to consult your written plan. An alert is useful only if you understand what the platform will notify you about and can respond in time. It does not close the position, limit a loss, or guarantee that you will see the notification when it arrives.
There is no universal alert threshold or notification frequency established here. Avoid treating a particular distance from the stop as a standard. Instead, decide what review question the alert is meant to surface—for example, whether the trade premise still holds—and choose a level consistent with that purpose and the platform’s available settings. Confirm whether the alert is based on a last-sale price, a quotation, or another condition; alert definitions vary.
Keep the alert and the stop conceptually separate. The stop is an order instruction with execution consequences. The alert is a notification that may lead you to take an action. If you rely on an alert as though it were an order, a missed message or delayed response can leave the position exposed.

A step-by-step process before placing the trade
- Write the premise and time frame. State why the position is being considered and how long the plan expects to hold it. A stop chosen without this context is difficult to distinguish from an arbitrary price.
- Define what invalidates the premise. Identify the price condition that would show the trade is wrong. Use a logical level tied to the plan rather than selecting a generic percentage.
- Assess ordinary movement consistently. Consider movement relevant to the instrument and intended holding period. Record the method so you can apply it consistently; do not mistake an indicator, multiplier, or buffer for a universal rule.
- Set the loss limit. Choose the dollar or account-risk amount for the position before entry. It should reflect your own plan; no particular allocation is prescribed here.
- Calculate the position size. For shares, divide planned dollar risk by the entry-to-stop dollars per share. For futures, incorporate tick value and contract count. Account for the fact that gaps, slippage, and fees can make the realized loss differ.
- Select the order type. Decide whether the trade-off of a stop order or stop-limit order fits your plan. If using a trailing stop, understand how it follows favorable movement and how fluctuations may trigger it.
- Set any review alert separately. Choose it for a specific review purpose, and verify what price condition the platform uses. Do not treat the notification as an order.
- Check the broker’s rules and settings. Confirm available order types, trigger conventions, and time-in-force or duration settings before relying on the setup.
- Set review checkpoints in advance. Decide when you will reassess the plan. Avoid changing levels solely because of a brief move, headline, or social-media reaction; use the criteria you wrote down.
Verify how your broker triggers and handles orders
Brokers and venues may differ in which prices trigger a stop, what order types they offer, and which duration settings are available. Some stop instructions may be based on last-sale prices and others on quotation prices; the exact convention matters near a trigger. Do not assume that a setting works the same way across firms or platforms.
Before placing an order, check the broker’s own order documentation or ask the firm:
- Which price source triggers this order type?
- What order does the stop become after triggering?
- What happens if the limit price is not reached after a stop-limit order triggers?
- Which time-in-force or duration choices apply, and when does the order expire?
- Can the trigger or order be affected by trading-session settings or other platform conditions?
- How are price alerts defined, and how are notifications delivered?
For U.S. stock investors, SEC and FINRA educational materials explain order mechanics, but they do not replace the specific terms and settings of your brokerage account. SEC investor education also distinguishes staff guidance from a Commission rule or regulation. Futures traders should additionally check the relevant contract specifications and venue rules.
Keep the plan stable without ignoring new information
Noise-driven decisions often begin when a trader reacts to a short-lived price move, headline, or social post without checking whether it changes the original premise. To reduce that risk, establish the stop logic, position size, alert purpose, and review checkpoints before entering. When an alert arrives or price approaches the stop, return to those criteria instead of improvising a new one in the moment.
That does not mean a plan can never change. Material new information may alter the premise, and a planned checkpoint may be the right time to reassess. The distinction is between a deliberate revision based on the trade’s stated criteria and an impulsive change made merely to avoid realizing a loss or because a brief fluctuation feels alarming. CME Group recommends clear criteria in advance, while SEC investor education warns that emotionally driven and noise-based decisions can undermine sound decision-making.
Do not widen a stop simply because the price is getting close if doing so would contradict the original loss plan. Nor should you assume that moving a stop farther away preserves the same risk: it increases the entry-to-stop distance, so holding the planned loss constant generally requires reducing position size. If the original premise is no longer valid, follow the exit decision specified in the plan rather than changing the premise to justify remaining in the trade.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using one percentage for every position. Different instruments and holding periods move differently. Tie the level to the trade premise and relevant movement, not a universal percentage.
- Choosing the stop after choosing an oversized position. Set the logical stop first, then calculate size from the loss limit and stop distance.
- Assuming the stop price is a guaranteed exit price. A stop order can fill away from its trigger; include that uncertainty in your understanding of risk.
- Using a stop-limit order as though it guarantees an exit. The limit constraint can leave the order unfilled if the market moves past it.
- Calling an alert a stop-loss. A notification requires attention and action; it does not execute an exit by itself.
- Ignoring trigger conventions. Verify the broker’s definition of the price condition and the order’s duration rather than assuming defaults.
- Moving the stop in response to every fluctuation. Use prewritten review criteria and scheduled checkpoints to distinguish new evidence from ordinary movement.
