How to Send XRP and Avoid Common Transaction Mistakes

Send XRP to the correct XRPL address, include any required destination tag, account for fees and reserves, and verify the validated result before considering the payment complete.

To send XRP, use your wallet or service to make a Payment to the recipient’s XRP Ledger account, enter any destination tag the receiving service requires, check the fee and spendable balance, then verify the transaction’s result in a validated ledger. A wallet’s “submitted” message is not proof that the payment completed.

Before sending: confirm the recipient details

Copy the XRP Ledger address from the recipient

Get the destination account address directly from the intended recipient or, for an exchange or hosted wallet, from its official XRP deposit screen. Check that the selected asset and network are XRP on the XRP Ledger. A direct XRP payment is a Payment transaction with a destination account and an XRP amount; it is not a transfer of a similarly named token on another network.

Check whether a destination tag is required

Some exchanges and hosted services use one XRP Ledger address for many customers. They may require a destination tag—a number the service uses to identify the customer or purpose of a payment. Follow the recipient’s current instructions and enter the tag exactly. The ledger can check whether a payment includes a tag when the destination account is configured to require one, but it cannot determine whether the number identifies the correct customer. See the XRPL guide to destination and source tags and its explanation of Require Destination Tag.

A missing tag can cause a payment to be rejected when the destination requires one; a wrong tag may leave the payment uncredited or require the service’s help to resolve. An address alone is not necessarily enough for a hosted account.

Check the asset, amount, and available balance

Make sure the payment is XRP

Confirm that the wallet is sending XRP on XRPL, rather than an issued token or an asset on another network. In the XRPL’s API examples, amounts are represented in drops: 1 XRP equals 1,000,000 drops. Wallet interfaces typically display XRP, but check the asset and network shown on the confirmation screen.

Leave room for the fee and reserve

The transaction fee is paid in XRP and destroyed by the ledger; it is separate from the amount delivered to the recipient. Also account for any XRP that must remain available to satisfy the account’s reserve requirement, which supports the account and its ledger objects. Your total balance may therefore exceed what the wallet can send.

Check the wallet’s spendable balance and the fee shown immediately before sending. Do not rely on a fixed minimum balance or a fee quoted in an old guide: reserves can change through validator fee voting, and network conditions affect transaction fees. The XRPL documentation explains reserves and the fee-voting process.

Send once and verify the result

  1. Review the confirmation screen. Check the XRP asset and network, destination address, amount, destination tag if required, and fee.
  2. Submit the payment once. Save or copy the transaction hash if the wallet or service provides it.
  3. Look up the transaction by its hash. Confirm that the result appears in a validated ledger before treating the payment as complete. XRPL’s Send XRP tutorial describes checking the validated transaction result.

A wallet or API may initially report a provisional result based on an open ledger. That acknowledgement can change; it is not the same as a final validated outcome. XRPL’s guidance on finality of results warns that unvalidated ledger data can change. The documentation says outcomes commonly become final in about 4–7 seconds, but this is typical guidance, not a guarantee; network load or connectivity can delay confirmation.

If the wallet is slow or unclear, do not send again immediately. First use the transaction hash to check whether the original payment succeeded. Retrying without checking can create a duplicate payment.

Common XRP sending mistakes

  • Leaving out a required tag: check the destination service’s current XRP instructions before sending.
  • Entering the wrong tag: recheck every digit; the ledger cannot verify that it matches the intended customer.
  • Selecting the wrong asset or network: confirm XRP on the XRP Ledger and the intended account address.
  • Trying to send the full displayed balance: leave enough XRP for the fee and any applicable reserve.
  • Treating “submitted” as “confirmed”: look for the validated transaction result.
  • Retrying while uncertain: check the first transaction by hash before sending another payment.
  • Relying on old fee or reserve figures: review current wallet and network information at send time.

For developers submitting transactions directly

Applications that construct XRPL transactions must handle protocol fields such as sequence and fee. XRPL recommends setting LastLedgerSequence so an unconfirmed transaction does not remain eligible indefinitely. A server’s provisional response should not be treated as proof of completion; check the transaction’s validated outcome using the hash. See Reliable Transaction Submission and Transaction Common Fields.
