What happened to the Carnival VIFP program?
Carnival Rewards is the current loyalty program; VIFP ended when the transition took place on September 1, 2026. The old VIFP member number automatically became the Carnival Guest Number. Eligible guests must enroll in Carnival Rewards and accept its terms to participate and receive specified transition benefits. Carnival first announced a June 2026 launch, but that schedule was superseded by its December 2025 update setting the September 1 date. Carnival’s launch-date update and its current Rewards FAQ describe the change.
How Carnival Rewards works
Points and Stars are different
Points are the program’s redeemable currency. Stars determine status in one of four tiers: Red, Gold, Platinum, or Diamond. According to Carnival’s FAQ, checked October 4, 2026, members earn 3 Points and 3 Status Qualifying Stars for each US$1 spent on eligible Carnival purchases. This is Carnival’s stated program rate, not an independently audited return on spending.
Which purchases earn Points and Stars?
Carnival lists cruise fare, gratuities, transfers, Carnival Vacation Protection, and eligible pre-cruise and onboard purchases as examples of qualifying activity. Its examples of exclusions include Required Cruise Fees and Expenses, government taxes and fees, Carnival Fly2Fun air travel, certain fare types and fees, and purchases paid for with points or certain credits. These examples are not a complete eligibility list: check Carnival’s FAQ and linked program terms for the charge you are considering.

Eligible activity connected to a sailing that ends on or after September 1, 2026 can earn Points and Stars even if the booking or eligible pre-cruise purchase was made before the Rewards launch. Casino earning follows separate rules: Carnival says members receive 1 Point for each casino point remaining at the end of a sailing and 1 Star for every casino point earned. Players Club offers and benefits are separate.
When Stars count toward status
The first status-earning window runs September 1, 2026 through December 31, 2028. The next runs January 1, 2029 through December 31, 2030. Stars that qualify for status reset at the beginning of each window. Reaching a higher tier during a window upgrades status for the rest of that window and the following enjoyment period, according to Carnival.

What happens to old VIFP status?
Carryover depends on the tier held on August 31, 2026, and, for the stated transition treatment, enrollment. The details below are Carnival’s rules as described in its FAQ checked October 4, 2026.

These are tier-specific transition provisions, not a guarantee that every former VIFP benefit carries over unchanged. If your prior tier matters, confirm that your account reflects the applicable treatment and that you have enrolled and accepted the terms.

How and when you can redeem Points
Carnival says Points can be applied during booking toward a deposit or eligible cruise fare. Once onboard, members can redeem through the Carnival HUB app for eligible purchases such as excursions, specialty dining, spa treatments, drink packages, and Wi-Fi. Carnival says redemption before a cruise is not yet available and will be introduced in a future release; the ability to use Points during booking does not mean they can currently be used for every pre-cruise purchase.
What happens to sailed days and milestone recognition?
Enrolled members carry forward days sailed before the Rewards launch. Carnival lists milestone recognition at 50, 100, and 200 days sailed, then at each additional 100-day milestone. The FAQ says recognition is not retroactive for milestones reached before launch. Previous VIFP gifts and the Gold pin are no longer included; Platinum and Diamond ship-specific pins continue.

Other account rules to know
- Point expiration: Carnival says Points remain valid if there is qualifying earn or redemption activity within a three-year period; each qualifying activity extends expiration by three years. Cardholder terms differ, so check the terms that apply to your account.
- Accounts are individual: Carnival Rewards accounts, Points, and Stars are non-transferable.
- Guests under 18: They cannot participate. Carnival says a responsible paying adult receives Points and Stars for a minor’s eligible spending.
- Rewards Mastercard: Carnival’s FAQ lists up to 6x Points on eligible Carnival purchases (3x through the card plus up to 3x through Carnival Rewards), 2x Points at eligible restaurants and grocery stores, and 1x on other eligible card purchases. Stars have separate rates. Carnival says the card is available only to U.S. residents and that it does not currently offer a co-branded card or partnership in Canada, Australia, or other countries outside the United States. Card terms and eligibility should be reviewed separately; these rates do not establish that the card is right for every traveler.
If your cruise crossed the launch date
Carnival says a sailing that began before September 1 and ended on or after that date retained the VIFP experience for booking, check-in, boarding pass, and HUB app during the voyage. VIFP benefits, sailed days, and milestone rewards were honored, while eligible activity also earned Rewards Points and Stars. Carnival said Points, Stars, and milestone days would become available after the voyage returned. It also noted that some eligible pre-cruise activity might post separately during system enhancements, while the earned values would be captured. For an account-specific discrepancy, review your Carnival profile and current support information.
What former VIFP members should do
- Sign in to your Carnival profile and check that your Carnival Guest Number and Rewards account appear correctly.
- Enroll in Carnival Rewards and accept the terms if you have not already done so, especially if you are seeking a stated legacy-tier transition benefit.
- Review eligible-purchase rules before assuming a charge will earn Points or Stars.
- Check the booking and onboard redemption options separately; Carnival does not currently offer pre-cruise redemption outside the booking process described in its FAQ.
- If your status, sailing days, or eligible activity has not posted as expected, consult your account and Carnival’s current support information.
Carnival president Christine Duffy described the 2025 change as an effort to provide more meaningful recognition, particularly for Diamond and Platinum guests, in the company’s original announcement. That stated rationale does not establish whether Rewards is more valuable for an individual member. The practical difference depends on eligible spending, status, and which benefits a traveler actually uses.
