You can sell a domain through a marketplace, broker, or private transaction, but listing it does not guarantee a buyer or a profit. Your net result depends on what a buyer will pay, what you paid and spent renewing the name, and the fees and other costs of the sale. Use these 10 steps to assess the opportunity, choose a route, and transfer the domain without releasing control before payment is verified.
1. Confirm you have the right to sell the domain
Sign in to the registrar account where the domain is held and confirm you can manage it. Check that the registrant contact details are current, and review your records for co-owners, business agreements, or disputes that could limit your authority to sell. A listing or appraisal does not establish ownership.
2. Check for rights issues and transfer restrictions
Before advertising the name, look for obvious conflicts with another party’s trademark or identity and check whether the domain is subject to a dispute or restriction. A domain that appears available in your account may still be affected by legal or transfer issues; this is not a substitute for advice from a qualified legal professional about a particular name.
For gTLDs, ICANN identifies circumstances that can block or delay a registrar transfer, including certain 60-day restrictions and formal proceedings. ICANN explains that “The Transfer Policy aims to provide a straightforward procedure for domain name holders to transfer their names from one ICANN-accredited registrar to another should they wish to do so.” That describes the policy’s purpose, not a guarantee that every transfer is immediate or unrestricted. See ICANN’s Domain Name Transfers guidance.

3. Estimate value using comparable evidence
There is no universal average sale price or reliable expected return for an individual domain. Value is specific to the name and the buyer. Look for comparable completed sales where reliable data is available, rather than treating an automated appraisal or an asking price as proof of market value.
Sedo notes that factors such as a domain’s age, brevity, internet-savvy wording, and popular extension can contribute to value. They are considerations, not a formula. A name’s likely usefulness to a buyer and evidence of actual demand matter more than any single attribute.
4. Choose a price and know your minimum
Decide whether you want to display a Buy Now price or invite offers and negotiate. A fixed price gives a buyer a clear purchase option; offers may suit a seller who wants to explore what buyers are willing to pay. Neither approach ensures a sale.

Set a minimum acceptable net amount, not just a headline asking price. Account for your purchase cost, renewal costs, the commission for the specific marketplace route, and any additional payment, transfer, bank, or tax charges that apply. Marketplace fees can vary by sale type and eligibility, so check the current terms before setting your floor.
5. Select a sales channel and compare its terms
Options include a domain marketplace such as Afternic or Sedo, a broker offering a more hands-on process, or a private sale. No one channel is best for every domain. Compare the practical differences before listing:
- Buyer reach: What audience or partner distribution does the service describe, and does the route suit your name?
- Sale format: Can you set a fixed price, receive offers, negotiate, or use an auction?
- Control and support: Who handles inquiries, payment, and transfer, and what decisions remain yours?
- Net proceeds: What commission and minimum fee apply to your specific sale route? Are there other costs?
- Listing terms: Is the listing exclusive, or may the name be distributed through partner networks?
As of October 8, 2026, the providers’ official pages list these fee examples. Terms can change, and eligibility and sale route affect the amount charged.
| Provider and route | Published fee | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Afternic Buy It Now, Basic | 25% commission by default | Afternic lists a 15% rate with GoDaddy Aftermarket nameservers. A $15 minimum commission is listed. |
| Afternic Buy It Now, Boost | 30% commission by default | Afternic lists a 20% rate with GoDaddy Aftermarket nameservers. A $15 minimum commission is listed. |
| Sedo Buy Now using its parking or sales lander | 10% | Applies to the specified Buy Now route. |
| Other Sedo marketplace sales | 15% | Applies to other sales through the Sedo marketplace. |
| SedoMLS sales | 20% | Applies to sales through the SedoMLS network. |
| Sedo external transfer service | 3% | Minimums vary by domain category; registrar, bank, and tax charges may also apply. |
Verify the current schedule and your eligibility directly with Afternic and Sedo before committing to a route. Afternic also describes its distribution and Fast Transfer services on its seller page, while Sedo explains its sales options and fees on its seller page and fee information. Service descriptions are providers’ own claims, not independent evidence that a particular domain will sell.
6. Prepare an accurate listing
Make it easy for a potential buyer to understand what is for sale and how to proceed. Include the exact domain name, your asking price or offer terms, and a straightforward purchase route. Relevant potential uses can help explain the name, but do not claim traffic, revenue, or buyer interest unless you can document those claims. Use a marketplace listing or sales lander when it fits your chosen channel.

A listing and a domain sales lander can help an interested visitor identify how to buy the name. Afternic describes a distribution network and Fast Transfer; Sedo describes SedoMLS and sales landers. Those features may make a listing available through their respective services, but platform-reported reach or promotional claims do not establish demand for your particular domain.

For example, Afternic says it receives 125 million qualified searches each month and claims that a Buy It Now price can increase the chances of selling by up to 65%. These are Afternic’s own promotional figures, not independently verified outcomes for an individual seller. They should not be treated as a forecast or promise.

Confirm each offer and the proposed sale terms through the relevant marketplace or directly with the buyer in a private transaction. Before accepting, calculate what you would receive after commissions and any payment or transfer charges. Make sure the price, payment method, and transfer process are understood by both sides.
Be cautious if someone makes a sale conditional on your paying for an appraisal they request. Do not pay such a fee unless you have independently verified the service and its role in the transaction. The available sources do not establish how common this situation is.
9. Verify payment and coordinate the transfer
For a marketplace transaction, follow that service’s payment and transfer process. For a private deal, consider an established escrow or transfer service rather than handing over control based only on a payment message. Confirm the transaction and payment status in the official account of the marketplace or intermediary before releasing the domain.
Sedo says it does not hand over the domain until the purchase price has been paid and pays the seller after a successful transfer. Check the applicable service’s current process; steps can differ by provider and transfer route.
10. Complete the handoff and keep records
Follow the registrar’s instructions for the route used. A gTLD registrar-to-registrar transfer requires an Auth-Code. ICANN says the registrar can let the registrant create the code or provide it within five calendar days of a request. A marketplace-managed transfer or an account push may use a different process, so follow the current instructions for your transaction.
After the transfer, confirm that the buyer has control and retain records of the agreed terms, payment, fees, and handoff. Keep copies of relevant account and transaction confirmations for your financial records.
