You can sell plants online through local marketplaces, ecommerce marketplaces, a plant-focused platform, or your own store. The workable route depends on what you can reliably grow or source, how much shipping and marketing you can handle, and whether each plant can legally be sold and shipped to its destination. These nine steps help you assess those decisions before investing in inventory.
1. Choose a plant niche you can serve reliably
Start with the plants you understand and can consistently grow or obtain, then match them to a specific group of buyers. Consider your climate, growing space, time, and local demand. A focused offer—such as California native plants for Los Angeles-area gardeners, an example in Shopify’s selling guide—can be easier to explain and stock than a broad, undifferentiated catalog.
Look at competing sellers to see what they offer, how they describe plants, and which customer needs appear underserved. Use that information to test whether your niche is distinct and practical, not as proof that a particular plant will sell.
2. Decide whether to grow plants or source them
Choose an inventory model early: propagate or grow plants yourself, buy them from suppliers, or combine the two. Each choice affects how quickly you can restock and how consistently you can fulfill orders. Growing may require lead time before plants are ready; sourcing depends on supplier availability and lawful, traceable supply.

Before listing a plant, work out how many you can actually sell, how often you can replenish them, and what happens if a crop or supplier order is delayed. Confirm that your source and the planned shipment comply with the rules for the plant and route.
3. Pick a name and check that you can use it
Choose a name that fits your niche and is easy for customers to remember. Check relevant business registries, domain availability, and social-media handles before committing to packaging or advertising. In the United States, Shopify’s guide suggests checking the state business-entity database as well as domains and social accounts. Name-registration rules vary by location, so confirm requirements with the appropriate local agency.
4. Establish the business and verify plant-sale rules
Business structures, registrations, taxes, and plant-related licenses depend on where you operate and what you sell. Shopify notes that U.S. sellers may consider structures such as a sole proprietorship or LLC; that is not a universal recommendation. Check with the relevant state and local agencies about business registration and nursery-stock or other plant requirements. This guide is not legal advice.
Legal permission to sell is separate from permission to ship a particular plant across a particular boundary. Rules can depend on species, origin, destination, and route. For imports into the United States, consult USDA APHIS’s instructions for importing plants and seeds; that guidance concerns imports from another country and does not resolve every domestic quarantine or species restriction.

- Etsy’s prohibited-items policy places responsibility on sellers to ensure plants, seeds, bulbs, and soil sold to U.S. consumers are U.S.-sourced or imported in compliance with applicable requirements, and excludes restricted plants.
- eBay’s plants and seeds policy excludes plants or seeds prohibited by government or shipping regulations.
Marketplace policies do not replace applicable laws. Check the rules for each item and destination before accepting an order.
5. Set prices using your full costs
Calculate what it costs to deliver each order, not just to acquire or grow the plant. Include plant or seed costs, growing materials, packaging, labor, shipping, marketplace or payment fees where applicable, and a fair share of fixed overhead such as storage. Then set a price that leaves the margin you need while remaining plausible for your target customer.
Compare similar offers to understand customer expectations, but do not assume another seller’s price proves your costs or market. Shopify’s guide gives Washington, D.C. shop Grounded’s plants as an example priced from $18 to $85; that is one shop’s range, not a typical market range or a recommended markup.
6. Plan inventory around supply and demand
Track what is ready to sell, what is growing or on order, and how long replenishment takes. A simple forecast can start with expected sales by plant and season, adjusted for the quantities you can actually supply. Keep a buffer for damaged stock or delays, and avoid promising quantities you cannot fulfill.

Seasonality can make inventory visibility especially useful. Shopify’s guide describes Plant Material using inventory tools to anticipate future seasonal needs; that example illustrates a planning approach, not a guarantee of sales or a required system.
7. Choose a sales channel and build your store
Choose a channel by comparing audience access, fees, branding and customer-data control, onboarding, geographic reach, and whether you must ship. Availability and platform terms can change, so check current requirements before building your plan around a service.
| Channel | What it can offer | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Local marketplace and pickup | Platforms such as Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace can connect you with nearby buyers; pickup can avoid shipping work. | Check local audience and platform rules. You will need a practical way to arrange pickup and communicate availability. |
| General marketplace | Etsy or eBay can expose listings to shoppers already using a marketplace. | Fees and marketplace policies apply, and you have less control over the selling environment than on your own site. Verify current terms directly. |
| Plant-focused marketplace | A specialist marketplace may bring shoppers specifically looking for plants. | Check onboarding, fees, buyer geography, shipping expectations, and current seller eligibility. Shopify’s guide describes Plantly as requiring vendor onboarding and limiting sellers to U.S. shipping; confirm those details with the platform before relying on them. |
| Your own ecommerce store | You control the storefront and have more flexibility over branding and customer relationships. | You must bring shoppers to the site and handle store setup, payments, fulfillment, and support. Shopify is one option described in its guide; verify current features and terms. |
You can begin with one channel and add another only if you can keep stock and order information accurate across them. A local pickup option may be especially useful while you learn which plants customers want, without taking on shipping for every sale.

A live plant can be handled roughly in transit and exposed to temperature swings or delays. Plan packaging and dispatch around the plant, weather at both ends, and the route. Avoid sending a package at a time likely to leave it sitting over a weekend; in freezing conditions, consider whether heat protection or faster service is appropriate. Check carrier rules and seasonal conditions before choosing a method.

Shopify’s separate plant-shipping guide discusses preparing and packing plants. No single box configuration guarantees a plant will arrive safely: size, plant type, weather, route, and handling all matter.
- A box suited to the plant’s size and shape
- Materials to secure the pot and prevent soil from spilling
- Protective packing to limit movement and shield fragile foliage
- Weather-appropriate insulation or heat protection when needed
- Clear dispatch timing and a plan for delays or delivery problems
9. Market the shop to the buyers you chose
Use the niche to guide product descriptions, photos, social posts, and any local outreach. Explain what makes the plants suitable for the intended buyer and give accurate care and size information. Direct shoppers to the channel where your stock and fulfillment are easiest to manage.
Shopify describes social selling and connections to channels such as eBay, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok through its store ecosystem. Treat those as platform capabilities to verify in the current app and service details, rather than assuming every integration or feature is available for every seller. Measure which listings or posts bring inquiries and completed orders, then spend effort on the approaches that fit your capacity.
