What a token approval does—and what it does not do
A token approval, or allowance, gives a smart contract permission to move specified tokens from your wallet. It is separate from connecting your wallet to a website. As MetaMask explains, “smart contract allowances are different from simply connecting your wallet to a dapp.” Disconnecting the site therefore does not remove an on-chain allowance. A presale may involve a purchase contract, while claiming tokens, swapping, or interacting with a listing may involve other contracts. Do not assume that every wallet connection created an allowance—or that a particular presale contract is the spender. Check your actual wallet address, network, token, spender, and transaction history.

- Choose an approval checker or block explorer. Ethereum.org links to approval-management tools, and MetaMask describes its wallet and portfolio options. Type the official address carefully or use a bookmark; a checker is an interface, not a guarantee that a wallet or project is safe. Ethereum.org and MetaMask Help Center
- Search or connect your wallet. Use the wallet address involved in the presale. Depending on the service, you may be able to search the address without connecting, or you may need to connect the wallet to initiate a transaction.
- Check every relevant network. Select each chain used for the presale and later activity. Approval results are network-specific; a list for one chain does not show allowances on another.
- Inspect each listed permission. Review the token, spender or contract, and allowance amount. Decide whether you still need that permission. Avoid revoking an allowance used by an active position or a future action you intend to take.
- Submit the revoke transaction. For an ERC-20 token, revocation sets the allowance to zero. NFT approvals use a disabled or false approval state. Check the wallet prompt’s network and transaction details before signing.
- Pay the network fee and verify the result. Revocation is an on-chain transaction, so it requires gas. After confirmation, refresh or reconnect the checker and confirm that the allowance changed or disappeared.
- Repeat for other chains and permissions. If you later use the same token and contract again, you may need to grant a new approval.
Which approval-management route should you use?
Wallet features, block explorers, and third-party approval services can all help you inspect permissions. Compare the available route by whether it supports the network and wallet you used, whether you can search an address without connecting, and whether you can review the spender and transaction before signing.

MetaMask says its Portfolio revocation feature is available on Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, and BNB Chain. Network support and interface details can change, so check the current feature before relying on it. MetaMask Help Center

Revocation blocks future use of the allowance you revoked; it does not reverse a completed transfer or recover stolen assets. If tokens are already deposited or staked, revoking an approval does not remove them. However, adding tokens or using the contract again may require a fresh approval. Revoke.cash and Revoke.cash FAQ

Revoking an allowance is also not a remedy for a compromised recovery phrase or private key. If you suspect someone else controls the wallet, allowance management alone cannot restore its security.
