You resell web hosting by buying capacity from a hosting provider, dividing it into customer accounts or packages, and charging clients for access. The provider usually operates the underlying server; you manage the customer-facing offer, and in a white-label model you may also handle billing and first-line support. Whether the business makes money depends on your actual costs, customer count, and support workload—not a standard industry margin.
How reseller hosting works
With reseller hosting, you purchase server resources from a provider and allocate them to accounts you sell. In the common cPanel setup, the provider gives you limited access to WebHost Manager (WHM), a tool for creating and managing cPanel accounts. Depending on the provider, you may be able to create or change customer packages, or you may be restricted to provider-defined options. cPanel’s reseller guide, last modified July 8, 2026, describes this provider-capacity model.

This does not necessarily mean you own or administer a server. The upstream provider controls the environment and determines which account-creation, package, quota, and WHM permissions you receive. cPanel’s reseller-privileges documentation, last modified September 18, 2026, explains that access can be limited through account limits and access-control lists (ACLs).
Choose between direct resale and referral
These are different businesses: direct resale makes you the customer’s hosting seller, while a referral model sends a prospective customer to a provider that serves them directly.

#1 Best Overall
| Model | What you do | Customer relationship and workload |
|---|---|---|
| White-label reseller | Buy provider capacity, create or offer hosting packages, and set your customer prices. | In Web Hosting Canada’s described model, you invoice customers and provide front-line support. You retain more control over branding and the customer relationship, but also take on billing and support work. Provider details can change; see its reseller-hosting page. |
| Affiliate or referral | Refer prospective customers to a hosting provider. | The cited provider says it manages hosting, billing, and technical support; the affiliate does not manage hosting accounts. The page does not establish current program eligibility, commission rates, or terms, so verify them with the provider before promoting the program. See Web Hosting Canada’s explanation. |
If you want to sell hosting as your own ongoing service, direct resale is the relevant model. If you want to recommend a provider without operating customer accounts or handling their support, a referral arrangement may fit better, subject to the provider’s current terms.
Compare reseller plans before you commit
Do not choose on headline storage alone. A plan’s practical value depends on how many accounts you can create, what each account can use, which WHM functions are available, and how the provider prices growth. Ask providers to confirm these points in writing:
- Capacity and account limits: account cap, storage, bandwidth, per-account quotas, and any usage or resource limits.
- Control: whether you can create and modify packages, and which WHM features and ACL privileges the plan enables. cPanel’s reseller-privileges documentation shows why permissions and quotas matter.
- Branding and customer access: white-label options, private or anonymous nameservers, and client-facing control panels.
- Billing and domains: billing automation, domain-reseller options, and whether any license or add-on is priced separately.
- Operations and risk: migration help, backups, support escalation, server location, and acceptable-use rules.
- Cost over time: upfront term, renewal price, included account capacity, and charges that rise with customer or cPanel-account count.
For a reseller package, confirm which control-panel license is included and who pays for it. cPanel’s licensing tiers vary by deployment type and account count, a consideration that is especially relevant if you operate your own VPS or dedicated server. Its license-purchasing documentation does not establish a timeless price; request a current quote for your specific setup.

There is no sourced industry-average profit margin that can reliably predict what your business will earn. Build an estimate from your own prices, costs, and expected workload:
- Estimate revenue: multiply the number of paying customers in each package by that package’s monthly price. Use realistic customer counts rather than assuming every available account will sell.
- Subtract recurring and variable costs: include wholesale hosting, any separate license or billing tools, payment-processing fees, applicable taxes, and expected refunds.
- Account for your time: estimate hours spent on setup, billing questions, troubleshooting, and support escalation, then assign your time a cost. A low cash expense can still be an unprofitable business if support consumes too many hours.
- Stress-test the result: recalculate with fewer customers, unused capacity, higher renewal costs, or more support requests. Check whether the business still works before committing to a long term.
In simple terms, your operating profit estimate is package revenue minus hosting and other business costs, including the value of your support time. Keep assumptions separate from confirmed provider charges, and revisit the estimate when renewal pricing or account needs change.
Know what domain resale adds
Web hosting and domain registration are separate services. If you also sell domain registrations, reseller rules depend on your relationship with the sponsoring registrar. ICANN’s industry explainer, dated June 20, 2017, says resellers operate under agreements with registrars and are not ICANN-accredited; the registrar remains responsible and accountable for registrations made through resellers. The cited registrar agreement includes requirements concerning ICANN marks, registration-agreement notices, and identifying the sponsoring registrar. Those provisions concern domain-registration services, not ordinary hosting resale. Review your registrar’s current agreement and customer-facing requirements before offering domains.
