A portfolio can own several funds and still depend heavily on the same handful of large technology companies. The practical defense is to look through every fund to its underlying holdings, add overlapping exposure across accounts, compare the result with an allocation chosen for your goals, and rebalance according to a pre-set plan. There is no regulator-approved universal percentage cap for AI-related shares, so an appropriate limit depends on your time horizon, objectives, and ability and willingness to absorb losses.

This is educational information for U.S. investors, not an individualized allocation or tax recommendation.

What “concentrated AI-stock risk” means

Concentration is an unintended large combined exposure to one company, a narrow group of companies, a sector, or a shared economic driver. It can arise even when an account screen shows many different securities. For example, an investor might hold a broad U.S. index fund, a technology-sector fund, and individual shares. If each owns the same large companies, the portfolio’s real exposure is much less diverse than the fund count suggests.

“AI-related” is not a single legally defined sector, and companies associated with artificial intelligence can have different businesses, valuations, and risks. The useful question is not whether a security carries an AI label. It is whether your combined exposure to particular issuers, industries, and asset categories is larger than you intended.

Diversification spreads exposure across asset categories and within them, including across companies and industries. It is designed to reduce portfolio risk, not eliminate losses. The SEC’s beginner guidance notes that large-company stocks as a group have lost money on average about one out of every three years; that historical statement is about large-company stocks generally, not a forecast or an AI-stock statistic.

Why several “diversified” funds can still overlap

Market-cap weighting favors the biggest companies

In a market-cap-weighted index, a company with a larger total market value receives a larger index weight. A broad index can therefore be widely diversified by company count while still assigning substantial weight to the largest U.S. companies. When those companies rise faster than the rest of the market, their share of a market-cap-weighted fund can grow as well.

Different funds may own the same leaders

A broad-market fund, a large-cap fund, and a technology fund may use different names and objectives yet hold some of the same issuers. The SEC advises investors to look at each fund’s top holdings and compare them instead of inferring diversification from the number of funds or from words such as “balanced” or “diversified” in marketing material.

An index label does not remove security risk

Index funds still own the securities in their indexes. Their risks include the risks of those underlying companies, tracking error, expenses, and the possibility of underperforming the index or benchmark. An exchange-traded fund or an index product can be highly concentrated if its index is concentrated.

Step 1: Define the portfolio’s job before changing it

Allocation decisions should follow the purpose of the money. Write down the goal, when the money may be needed, and how much loss you could financially and emotionally withstand. Time horizon and risk tolerance both matter: a long horizon may allow more volatility, but it does not make a concentrated position safe, and the ability to take risk is not the same as the willingness to do so.

Do not begin by selecting an arbitrary “AI maximum.” The sources do not establish a universal AI-stock cap or a universal rebalancing threshold. Instead, decide what mix of asset categories and risk levels is appropriate for the goal, then test whether your existing holdings fit that plan.

Step 2: Build a look-through inventory across every account

Collect current information from taxable brokerage accounts, workplace plans, individual retirement accounts, and other investment accounts. Include individual securities, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, cash positions, and any model portfolio or managed account. Record the account type because taxes, trading restrictions, and available investments differ by account.

For each fund, use its current fact sheet, prospectus, shareholder report, and holdings file. Fund websites and the SEC’s EDGAR database provide disclosure documents; holdings and weights change, so use the most recent information available when you make a decision. A fund’s “top holdings” list may not show every position, but it quickly identifies major overlaps and deserves closer review.

  1. List direct positions. Record the issuer, number of shares or dollar value, account, and date of the information.
  2. List each fund separately. Note its stated objective, benchmark or index, weighting method, geographic scope, company-size focus, expenses, and principal risks.
  3. Download underlying holdings. Capture the date of the file and the percentage assigned to each issuer. Do not combine figures from different dates without labeling the mismatch.
  4. Normalize names. Make sure the same issuer is not counted as different companies because of share-class labels, abbreviations, or ticker changes.
  5. Aggregate across accounts. Add direct ownership to the indirect ownership represented by each fund. Keep a record of assumptions when a disclosure uses a parent company, subsidiary, depositary receipt, or derivative exposure.

Step 3: Measure concentration at more than one level

Issuer concentration

Start with the combined percentage tied to each company after looking through funds. A company can be a large position without being called an AI investment, and an AI-related company can be held through several unrelated-looking products. The issuer total is the clearest way to find accidental duplication.

Sector and industry concentration

Group holdings using a consistent classification supplied by the fund or index provider. Compare the result with the allocation you chose for your goal. Classifications differ, so avoid mixing one provider’s sector labels with another’s without noting the method.

Asset-class, geographic, and size concentration

Check how much is in domestic equities, international equities, bonds, cash, real estate, and other categories relevant to your plan. Within equities, identify exposure to large, medium, and small companies and to different regions. Adding another fund that owns the same large U.S. companies may increase complexity without adding a new source of return.

A worked overlap example (illustrative only)

The following arithmetic is a made-up example to show the method, not a current holding or a suggested allocation. Suppose a household owns 6% of Company A directly. Fund X represents 4% of the household portfolio and has 10% of its assets in Company A, adding 0.4 percentage points. Fund Y represents 20% of the portfolio and has 3% in Company A, adding 0.6 points. The combined Company A exposure is therefore 7% (6% + 0.4% + 0.6%). Repeat that calculation for every issuer that appears in more than one place.

Source Portfolio share Company A weight inside source Portfolio exposure contributed
Direct shares 6% (hypothetical) 100% 6 percentage points
Fund X 4% (hypothetical) 10% 0.4 percentage points
Fund Y 20% (hypothetical) 3% 0.6 percentage points
Total 30% of the example sources — 7 percentage points

Real holdings require current disclosures and may include look-through complications. Do not treat this illustration as evidence about any named fund or company.

Step 4: Compare the inventory with a written target

Write the intended allocation before deciding what to sell. Your target can specify broad asset categories, geographic exposure, company-size exposure, and any deliberate single-company or sector positions. The target should reflect the goal, horizon, risk tolerance, account constraints, fees, and tax circumstances. There is no single allocation that is right for every investor.

Then identify the difference between the current and target allocations. A position can be too large because it appreciated, because a fund changed its composition, or because several purchases unintentionally added the same exposure. Separating those causes helps you choose whether to direct new contributions, exchange a fund, reduce a direct position, or make no change.

Ways to reduce unintended AI-related concentration

Redirect new money

In a retirement account or a taxable account, directing future contributions toward underweighted categories can gradually restore the target without immediately selling an appreciated position. This approach does not eliminate concentration quickly and may be unsuitable if the portfolio is far from its target or the risk is urgent.

Trim or replace overlapping positions

Selling a direct holding or exchanging a fund can reduce duplication, but the decision should account for transaction costs, fund expenses, tax consequences, account rules, and the investment’s role in the plan. Avoid replacing one concentrated product with another simply because its name sounds broader.

Add other asset categories thoughtfully

Adding bonds, cash, international companies, or smaller-company exposure can change the portfolio’s risk mix. None is a guaranteed hedge against a decline in AI-related or technology companies. Bonds carry interest-rate, credit, and inflation risks; cash can lose purchasing power; international and smaller-company investments have their own market, currency, liquidity, and volatility risks.

Keep deliberate satellite positions separate

If you intentionally want a thematic or single-company position, classify it as a satellite around the core allocation and monitor the total exposure created by both. A deliberate position is still concentrated; labeling it “satellite” does not reduce its risk.

Step 5: Rebalance with a rule, not a reaction

Rebalancing means restoring the allocation selected for the goal after market moves or contributions push it away from target. The SEC describes two common methods:

Best Value
Hiacry 8 Pack Gel Pens, Quick-Drying Black Ink, 0.7mm Fine Point Fidget Pen
  • Twin-Ball Design : Hiacry gel pen features a double ball conical tip that reduces writing resistance and provides a stable and smooth writing experience. 0.7mm quick drying black ink ensures no jumping, leakage or seepage.
  • Quick-Dry Long Lasting Ink:0.7mm black ink can slide effortlessly, dry immediately, & is not easily dirty. It has a high-capacity reservoir (up to 1300 meters), which is very suitable for left-handed & right-handed users.
  • Sleek Design for Journaling & Planning: Engineered with a low center of gravity and precision tip for steady ink flow, these journaling pens excel at note-taking, sketching, planning, and more. They combine stylish pens with top-tier performance.
  • Rolling Ball Design:The pocket clip with roll ball design can be easily attached to notebook pockets and binders, in addition, the fidget on the pen clip is also a small toy for your daily thinking to relieve stress.
  • Comfortable Non-Slip Grip:The ergonomic pen barrel has a soft rubberized coating for a comfortable, non-slip grip, so you won't get fatigued even after long hours of writing.
Method How it works Important considerations
Periodic Review and, if needed, rebalance at a set interval. The SEC gives intervals such as six or twelve months as examples. Choose an interval you can follow; relatively infrequent rebalancing generally avoids unnecessary trading. The interval is not a universal prescription.
Threshold-based Rebalance when an allocation moves beyond a pre-set percentage-point or relative band. Set the threshold in advance and apply it consistently. The sources do not specify a universal band.

Rebalancing may involve selling what has grown and buying what has fallen or directing new contributions to the underweight. In a taxable account, sales can create gains or losses and may affect your tax bill; in a retirement account, different rules may apply. Consider fees, bid-ask spreads, trading restrictions, and the effect on your overall plan before acting.

Do not rebalance solely because a headline predicts an AI boom or collapse. Use the rule you selected for the goal, and update the rule only after a deliberate review of your circumstances.

How to compare funds when replacing or simplifying holdings

Use the same checklist for every candidate. A lower expense ratio alone does not prove that a fund improves diversification.

Question What to inspect Why it matters
What do I actually own? Current top holdings, complete holdings file, issuer and sector weights, and overlap with existing funds. Reveals duplicated exposure that a fund label may hide.
How is the index built? Market-cap, equal, fundamental, capped, or other weighting; reconstitution and rebalancing rules. Weighting determines how quickly large companies can dominate.
What is the asset mix? Geography, company size, asset class, currency, and whether derivatives or securities lending are used. Shows whether the product adds a genuinely different source of risk and return.
What does it cost? Expense ratio, transaction costs, spreads, and any account-level charges. Costs reduce returns and can differ even among similar strategies.
What can go wrong? Prospectus risk factors, tracking error, liquidity, concentration, and historical underperformance versus the benchmark. Indexing does not remove market or implementation risk.
Does it fit the plan? Goal, horizon, risk tolerance, tax location, and desired simplicity. A technically diversified fund can still be unsuitable for a particular objective.

Protect yourself from AI-themed investment fraud

AI’s popularity can be used to sell fraudulent investments. In a joint alert dated January 25, 2024, the SEC, NASAA, and FINRA warned about schemes that claim artificial intelligence can guarantee returns, use deepfake company announcements, or create urgency around a supposed opportunity. Their warning is direct: “Claims of high guaranteed investment returns with little or no risk are classic warning signs of fraud.”

Before sending money or following a promotion:

  • Verify that the investment professional and platform are registered, and check disciplinary information independently.
  • Read the company’s regulatory filings and fund documents rather than relying on screenshots, testimonials, celebrities, or influencers.
  • Be skeptical of guaranteed returns, pressure to act immediately, secret algorithms, or claims that losses are impossible.
  • Confirm the identity of a person or company through contact information you obtain independently, not only through a message or advertisement.
  • Do not treat an AI-themed label as evidence of diversification, safety, or superior performance.

Common mistakes that leave a portfolio concentrated

  • Counting funds instead of holdings: five funds can own the same issuers.
  • Using stale data: fund weights change, so an old fact sheet may misstate today’s exposure.
  • Ignoring retirement accounts: concentration across accounts matters even when each account looks reasonable alone.
  • Assuming “index” means broad: an index can be sector-specific, equal-weighted, capped, or concentrated by design.
  • Chasing the opposite trade: selling one technology fund for another may not reduce exposure if the holdings overlap.
  • Setting a rule after a decline: a panic-driven threshold is not the same as a written rebalancing policy.
  • Forgetting non-investment risks: job income, company stock compensation, and future spending tied to the technology sector can increase household concentration even when the brokerage account appears diversified.

When individualized advice may help

Allocation, tax treatment, and the appropriate response to concentration depend on personal facts that a general guide cannot evaluate. Consider a qualified financial professional if you have complex accounts, substantial appreciated assets, employer stock, a near-term spending need, or difficulty translating a goal into a target allocation. Verify the professional’s credentials, registration, and disciplinary history before engaging them, and ask how they are compensated and what conflicts they manage.

A practical review checklist

  1. State the goal, time horizon, and loss capacity and tolerance.
  2. Export current holdings from every investment account.
  3. Read each fund’s current holdings, prospectus, reports, and index methodology.
  4. Aggregate direct and indirect exposure by issuer, sector, asset class, geography, and company size.
  5. Identify overlaps and compare the result with a written target allocation.
  6. Choose whether new contributions, a fund change, or a sale is the least disruptive way to restore the target.
  7. Set a periodic or threshold-based review rule and record the date and rationale.
  8. Recheck taxes, fees, account restrictions, and personal circumstances before placing trades.
  9. Ignore AI promotions that promise guaranteed returns or no risk, and verify registration independently.

The central safeguard is transparency: know what each fund owns, add the exposures together, and make changes only in service of a plan you chose before the next market headline.
