Before selling an AI-related holding, determine what you actually own, whether the underlying business or fund thesis has changed, how large the exposure is after including overlapping funds, when you need the money, and what taxes or account rules would apply. The right action could be holding, rebalancing part of the position, or exiting—but it depends on those facts, not on the label “AI” or one day’s price move.
This checklist is educational, not individualized investment or tax advice. The SEC’s Investor.gov guidance says an appropriate allocation depends substantially on your goals, time horizon and risk tolerance.

Start with the question a price chart cannot answer
A falling quotation tells you what the market is paying now; it does not, by itself, tell you whether the investment’s expected cash flows, competitive position or long-term role in your portfolio have changed. Selling solely because a position is down can turn temporary volatility into a permanent loss. Holding automatically can be just as careless if the original assumptions no longer hold or the position has become too large for your plan.

Use the decline as a prompt for a structured review. Write down why you bought the holding, what had to remain true for that reason to work, and what evidence would invalidate it. Then compare the current facts with your target allocation, financial timetable, ability to absorb a loss and tax situation.

1. What exactly counts as your “AI stocks” exposure?
The phrase can describe very different risks. Identify every relevant holding across taxable accounts, retirement accounts and employer plans before deciding.
A single company
One issuer exposes you to that company’s revenue mix, customers, financing needs, management decisions and valuation. An AI product may be only one division, or the company may depend on selling equipment and services to a small group of large customers. Its price can therefore move for reasons unrelated to the broader AI theme.
An AI-themed exchange-traded fund or mutual fund
A themed fund may own dozens of securities but still be concentrated in one industry, geography or supply chain. Read its current holdings, sector weights and methodology. The SEC’s Investor.gov diversification guidance warns that a narrowly focused fund may not provide the diversification an investor expects.
A broad technology or market fund
A diversified index fund can contain large technology companies that spend heavily on AI or supply AI infrastructure. You may have meaningful AI exposure without owning a fund marketed as an AI strategy. Check the fund’s top holdings and the percentage represented by technology-related companies.
Overlapping funds and indirect exposure
Several funds can own the same companies. Compare their top holdings and position sizes rather than counting funds as separate sources of diversification. Investor.gov explains that “The practice of spreading money among different investments to reduce risk is known as diversification,” but spreading money among vehicles that hold the same issuers does not eliminate concentration.

| Exposure type | What to inspect | Typical decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Single company | Revenue sources, customers, margins, balance sheet and competitive position | Are the company-specific assumptions still credible? |
| AI-themed fund | Holdings, weighting rules, fees, sector and geographic concentration | Does the fund still provide the exposure and diversification you intended? |
| Broad fund | AI-linked holdings, top-position weights and overlap with other accounts | Is indirect exposure larger than your target? |
| Employer or other special holding | Vesting, blackout periods, options and account restrictions | Can you reduce risk, and what special tax rules apply? |
2. Has the investment thesis changed, or only the price?
Separate a change in value from a change in the reason you owned the investment. Review the company’s or fund’s latest official disclosures and test the assumptions below.
Demand and customer spending
Ask who ultimately pays for the AI products or infrastructure and whether those customers can keep spending at the required pace. For infrastructure businesses, returns may depend on continued capital expenditure by a small number of large customers. An SEC-filed AI-infrastructure fund disclosure warns that reduced AI capital spending could affect companies across several supply-chain layers and that different themes can rely on the same demand driver. That is a risk illustration for that fund’s strategy, not proof that every AI company has identical exposure.

Competitive position and product economics
Check whether the issuer still has the technology, distribution, data, intellectual property or customer relationships that supported your original thesis. Examine whether competition is pushing prices down, whether customers can switch suppliers and whether new products require costly upgrades.
Margins, profitability and capital requirements
Growth can require substantial research, computing capacity, factories or acquisitions. Compare the spending required to reach the original plan with available cash flow and financing access. A lower share price does not repair a business whose economics have deteriorated; conversely, a lower quote does not invalidate a thesis whose operating evidence remains intact.
What the disclosure actually says
Risk-factor language is not a forecast. A fund registration statement may describe technology-sector weakness, market volatility, concentration in a small group of large technology companies and risks tied to AI adoption. Treat those statements as scenarios to evaluate, not as a prediction that a specific holding will fall or recover.

3. Is the position now larger or riskier than intended?
Market movements can change portfolio weights. If non-AI assets fall less than AI holdings, your AI percentage may shrink; if other assets fall more or an AI position previously appreciated sharply, the AI percentage may still be above your limit. Calculate exposure using current values, including indirect holdings.

- List each direct AI-related security and its current market value.
- For every fund, record the percentage in each overlapping company or sector from the latest holdings report.
- Add direct and indirect amounts to estimate your total exposure to the same issuers and demand drivers.
- Divide that total by your investable portfolio value and compare it with the allocation you originally chose.
Investor.gov describes rebalancing as bringing a portfolio back toward a target allocation. Rebalancing may involve selling part of an appreciated or oversized position, directing new contributions elsewhere, or using both methods. A market decline does not require rebalancing unless your plan says the current weight is outside its acceptable range.
Use a written risk limit
A rule such as “this theme may not exceed the percentage I can tolerate losing” is more useful than an emotional reaction to a headline. The sources do not establish a universally suitable percentage. Your limit should reflect your goals, other assets, emergency reserves and ability to withstand a prolonged decline.
4. When will you need the money, and can you absorb another loss?
Time horizon has two parts: when the money is needed and how much financial capacity you have to wait. Investor.gov notes that investors with longer horizons may be better able to bear volatility, while a near-term goal generally supports less risk.
Near-term spending
If tuition, a home purchase, a tax bill or another known expense is approaching, a large stock allocation can expose the goal to an unfavorable selling date. The key issue is not whether AI stocks eventually recover; it is whether you can fund the expense without relying on that recovery.

Long-term goals
For a distant retirement or other goal, you may have more time for volatility to play out, but time does not guarantee a particular company or theme will succeed. A long horizon supports the ability to wait; it does not replace diversification or business analysis.
Willingness versus ability to take risk
Willingness is your emotional comfort with losses. Ability is whether income, cash reserves and other assets let you meet obligations after a decline. Someone may be willing to tolerate volatility but unable to finance a near-term obligation, or financially able to wait but unwilling to endure the swings. Your allocation needs to fit both.
5. What might a broad AI sell-off be signaling?
Consider whether the decline reflects a company-specific event, a valuation reset, a broad technology-sector move or concern about AI spending. An SEC-filed fund disclosure states that weakness in the technology sector can affect markets and that a small group of large technology companies investing heavily in AI has contributed substantially to recent broad-market gains. This describes concentration and correlation risks; it is not a current market forecast.
Shared demand drivers
Chip designers, data-center operators, equipment suppliers, software vendors and electricity or networking providers can appear diversified while depending on the same build-out cycle. If customers slow capital spending, pressure can move through several layers at once.
Correlation across funds
Different themes can own the same large companies or depend on the same customers. During a risk-off period, correlations often matter more than the marketing labels on the funds. Review actual holdings and business dependencies before assuming that switching from one AI theme to another reduces risk.

Distinguish evidence from narrative
News about one product launch, regulation or customer contract may be material, but a dramatic daily move may also reflect positioning and sentiment. Require evidence that changes revenue, costs, financing or competitive dynamics before treating a headline as a thesis break.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. What are the tax and account consequences of selling?
For U.S. investors, the IRS generally treats a securities sale as a capital gain or loss transaction. The result depends on your cost basis, holding period, account type and other transactions. IRS Publication 550 (2025) and Publication 544 (2025) describe the federal rules, including limits on using capital losses and reporting requirements.
Cost basis and holding period
Confirm the adjusted basis for each tax lot, not merely the average price shown by an app. Selling lots held for different periods can produce different short-term or long-term tax results. Your brokerage’s default lot method may not match the method you intend, so check the account instructions before placing an order.
Wash-sale rule
The IRS describes a wash sale as selling stock or securities at a loss and acquiring substantially identical stock or securities within 30 days before or after the sale. The rule can defer the loss deduction and may apply across transactions you did not intend to connect. Buying a replacement in another account, or an acquisition by a spouse or an individual retirement account, can create complications; obtain professional advice for your facts.
Account-specific issues
Sales inside retirement accounts generally do not work like sales in a taxable brokerage account. Employer stock, restricted shares, options, vesting schedules, blackout periods and non-U.S. tax residence can add rules that the general IRS summaries do not resolve. A qualified tax professional can evaluate a transaction before you act.
Compare the real choices, not just “sell” and “hold”
When more than one action is plausible, score each holding or proposed change on the same dimensions.
| Decision axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Structure | Is it a single company, a focused fund or a broad fund with indirect exposure? |
| Concentration | How much overlaps with other holdings, accounts and AI supply-chain themes? |
| Thesis durability | Do demand, customer spending, margins, competition and capital needs still support the original case? |
| Downside tolerance | Could you financially and emotionally withstand another substantial decline? |
| Time horizon | When is the money needed, and can the goal survive a bad selling date? |
| Tax and account effects | What are the basis, holding-period, wash-sale and account restrictions? |
A practical decision process after a market drop
- Pause the impulse. Do not place an order solely because the quote is lower than yesterday’s.
- Inventory exposure. Gather statements, fund holdings and employer-plan information; include overlapping positions.
- Write the thesis. State the demand, competitive, margin and capital assumptions in plain language.
- Check current evidence. Compare those assumptions with official company or fund disclosures and identify what, if anything, has broken.
- Recalculate allocation. Compare direct and indirect exposure with your target and any maximum risk limit.
- Match risk to the goal. Consider the date the money is needed, emergency reserves, income stability and both willingness and ability to absorb loss.
- Model the tax result. Check each tax lot, holding period, account type and possible wash-sale window before selling at a loss.
- Choose the smallest action that restores the plan. Options can include holding, directing new contributions elsewhere, trimming an oversized position or exiting a holding whose thesis no longer fits. The appropriate choice depends on the review, not on a universal rule.
- Document the decision. Record the target weight, reason, tax assumptions and condition that would trigger another review. This reduces the chance of changing course with every headline.
When selling may be more defensible—and when it may not
Facts that can support reducing or closing a position
- The business or fund no longer meets the assumptions that justified owning it.
- AI exposure is materially above your stated risk limit after counting overlap.
- The money is needed soon and the current volatility threatens the goal.
- A concentration, liquidity, employment or account risk has become unacceptable.
- Tax and transaction effects are understood and the change restores your written plan.
Facts that do not establish a sell decision by themselves
- A one-day or one-week price decline.
- A dramatic headline without evidence of changed business economics.
- Fear that every AI-related holding will fall together.
- A desire to “get back to even” without considering allocation and time horizon.
- An assumption that a different fund is diversified without checking its holdings.
Questions to keep on your review worksheet
- What is the exact security, account and tax lot?
- What percentage of my total portfolio is direct or indirect AI exposure?
- Which holdings overlap, and which depend on the same customers or spending cycle?
- What had to remain true for my original thesis to work?
- Which current fact most strongly supports or weakens that thesis?
- When will I need this money, and could I meet that need after another major decline?
- What are the cost-basis, holding-period, wash-sale and account consequences?
- Would holding, trimming, redirecting new contributions or selling best restore my written allocation?
Bottom line
Do not sell AI stocks merely because the market has dropped. First identify your actual exposure, test whether the investment thesis changed, measure concentration and overlap, match volatility with your time horizon and financial capacity, and calculate tax and account consequences. If the review shows that the holding still fits your plan, a decline alone is not evidence that you must exit. If the thesis is broken or the position violates your risk and allocation rules, reducing it can be a rational plan-based action rather than a reaction to fear.
