To respond to an unfamiliar order or trade, contact the broker promptly through an independently verified channel, secure account access, and keep a written record. The guidance here is for U.S. retail brokerage accounts; exact order settings and cancellation rules vary by firm.
Why an order can execute outside regular market hours
“Overnight trading” is often used to describe trading outside the regular session, but the hours and available securities depend on the venue and broker. FINRA describes overnight trading for certain stocks as 8 p.m.–4 a.m. ET, after-hours trading as 4–8 p.m. ET, and pre-market trading as typically 7–9:30 a.m. ET. Check your firm’s current schedule and rules rather than assuming every stock or order can trade in every session. FINRA’s extended-hours trading guidance explains the distinctions.

Extended-hours conditions differ from regular trading. FINRA warns that liquidity may be lower and volatility higher, so an order might fill only in part, not fill, or receive a less competitive price. Extended-hours venues are not linked in the same way as regular-hours markets, and publication of the National Best Bid and Offer (NBBO) is limited to regular trading hours. A price displayed on one venue may therefore not represent the best price available elsewhere.
Audit open orders before an overnight session
Use your broker’s order-status or open-orders screen, not just your trade history. For every working order, check the details below. A saved order ticket or a cancellation request is not proof that an order has been canceled.

FINRA notes that a day order generally remains active through the current trading day. A good-till-canceled (GTC) order can remain active until execution or cancellation, subject to the firm’s duration limit. A day order may require a separate instruction to participate in extended hours. Firms can limit which securities or order types are accepted in those sessions, and unfilled orders may be canceled or carried into the next regular session under the firm’s rules. See FINRA’s overview of extended-hours trading and its guidance on order time parameters.
Cancel an order you no longer want
- Open the brokerage app or website and go to its order-status, open-orders, or equivalent screen.
- Select the specific working order and review its security, side, quantity, type, prices, time-in-force, and session eligibility.
- Use the broker’s cancel workflow. If you intend to replace the order, do not assume the replacement cancels the original; check each order’s status.
- Refresh the order screen or check the order history until the order is explicitly marked canceled. If the status is pending, unclear, or the order appears to have filled, contact the broker promptly.
Cancellation is not instantaneous in every circumstance: an order may execute before the cancellation is processed. The broker’s displayed status and confirmation determine what happened, so do not treat submitting a cancellation request as confirmation.

Choose an order type with its trade-offs in mind
An order setting can reduce one kind of risk while increasing another. FINRA describes the main trade-offs in its order-types guidance.

| Order type | What it prioritizes | Risk to understand |
|---|---|---|
| Market | Execution, at the available market price | The execution price is not guaranteed, especially in less liquid or volatile extended hours. |
| Limit | A maximum acceptable buy price or minimum acceptable sell price | The order may not execute if the market does not reach the limit. |
| Stop | Triggering an order when a specified stop price is reached | Once triggered, a conventional stop becomes a market order; the execution price may differ from the stop price. |
| Stop-limit | A stop trigger followed by a limit price that constrains execution | The order may not execute if the market moves past the limit price. |
A stop order is not a guaranteed price floor. If you are trying to constrain the execution price, understand that a limit-based order can leave you without a fill. Check whether your broker accepts the chosen order type in the session you want.

Protect account access against unauthorized orders
Enable the strongest multifactor authentication (MFA) your brokerage supports, use a unique password, and secure the email account used for password resets and account recovery. Treat unexpected sign-in links and password-reset messages as suspicious; go to the broker’s official website or app directly instead of following an unsolicited link.
FINRA’s October 15, 2020 information notice explains that MFA uses two or more different types of factors and reduces the chance that exposure of one credential alone will compromise an account. The notice also discusses phishing and fraudulent password-reset attempts. It references FIDO resources, but does not establish that any particular brokerage supports hardware security keys. Before relying on a key or authentication method, confirm broker compatibility and understand how to recover access if the device is lost. Read FINRA’s information notice on authentication.

Respond promptly to an unfamiliar order or trade
- Contact the brokerage immediately. Use a phone number or contact channel independently confirmed through the broker’s official website or app. Ask about the order or transaction and how to dispute it. FINRA advises customers to question a broker promptly about transactions they do not understand or did not authorize. FINRA: Questions to Ask Before You File a Complaint.
- Ask the firm to secure access and review activity. Request help securing online access, and ask the firm to review recent orders and changes to contact or profile information. Change compromised credentials from a trusted device and secure the associated email account. The exact account-lock controls and dispute process are broker-specific.
- Preserve the record. Keep order IDs, timestamps, trade confirmations, statements, alerts, screenshots, and written exchanges with the broker. If money was lost or a trade was unauthorized, make a written complaint and retain the letter and related correspondence.
- Escalate if needed. If the response is unsatisfactory, ask for the branch manager or compliance department. You can also consider filing a complaint with FINRA. FINRA covers most brokerage firms and associated persons; some issues involving investment advisers, transfer agents, mutual funds, or public companies may instead belong with the SEC or a state securities regulator. FINRA’s complaint center provides complaint information.
FINRA cautions that an investment loss alone does not establish misconduct, and regulatory action does not guarantee that money or securities will be returned. An unauthorized trade deserves prompt investigation, but reimbursement is not assured.
Pay close attention to options activity and account changes
FINRA’s 2020 notice on account takeover and new-account fraud describes schemes involving fraudulent options trading. It notes that some schemes involved illiquid options and trades between an account controlled by a victim and another account. That is one pattern, not a description of every unauthorized trade. Check unexpected options activity as well as changes to your profile or account details. FINRA’s notice on account takeover and new-account fraud provides further context.

Set rules that match your priorities
Before placing or leaving an order, decide which risk matters most to you: a less favorable execution price, a missed trade, or an order remaining active longer than intended. Compare the settings that control those outcomes:
- Execution versus price control: market orders emphasize execution; limit orders constrain price but can remain unfilled.
- Session participation: verify whether the order can execute outside regular hours and whether enabling that participation is a separate choice.
- Expiration and carryover: confirm when the order expires and whether an unfilled order carries into another session.
- Changes near the open or close: review the broker’s rules for modifying or canceling an order at those times.
- Authentication and recovery: use an MFA method supported by the firm and know how to regain access if you lose the device or credential.
Broker policies differ, so read the firm’s current extended-hours disclosure and order ticket before submitting an order. In particular, check default duration and any control authorizing extended-hours execution instead of assuming that a setting works the same way at every brokerage.
