A payout ratio is a useful starting point, not proof that a dividend is safe: compare several periods, understand how the company defines free cash flow, and assess its leverage and outlook. A board can change or suspend a dividend, even when current coverage looks strong.
Start with the payout ratios—but read them in context
A payout ratio compares dividends with a measure of the company’s financial results. The earnings payout ratio uses earnings; the free-cash-flow payout ratio uses cash remaining after operating needs and capital expenditure. Neither ratio, by itself, establishes that future payments are affordable.

Earnings payout
Compare dividends with earnings over several reporting periods. A high or rising ratio can mean less room to absorb weaker results, but it needs context: earnings may have changed because of unusual items, and a single period may not reflect the underlying business. Review the company’s stated policy and outlook rather than applying a universal cutoff.

Free-cash-flow payout
Free cash flow can show how much cash remains after operations and capital spending, but companies may calculate it differently. TELUS says its free-cash-flow measure is not standardized under IFRS and may not be comparable with similarly named measures used by other issuers. Read the company’s definition and reconciliation before relying on the ratio or comparing it with another company’s figure. TELUS’s first-quarter 2026 MD&A describes its trailing payout calculation and measure.

Check what remains after leases and investment
A cash-flow measure can make a dividend look more comfortable if it does not reflect all significant cash claims. Review lease payments, planned capital spending and other material obligations alongside the reported payout ratio. The practical question is not simply whether cash flow exceeds the dividend, but how much flexibility remains after the business funds the investment and fixed payments it needs to operate.
BCE’s 2025 disclosure illustrates how the chosen measure affects the apparent cushion: the company reported a payout ratio of approximately 64% against free cash flow and approximately 99% using its separately disclosed after-lease measure. BCE described 2025 as a transitional year following a mid-year dividend reset. These are BCE-specific reported figures, not general benchmarks for a safe dividend. BCE’s 2025 results and dividend-policy disclosure explains the figures and its policy.

Assess debt and interest coverage
Debt payments compete with dividends for cash and can limit a company’s options when business conditions deteriorate. Read leverage and interest-coverage measures together with payout ratios. Rising net debt or weakening interest coverage can reduce the company’s ability to maintain distributions while meeting its debt obligations.

These measures do not predict a dividend decision on their own; they help show the financial claims and risks surrounding the payout. Use the company’s policy as context, not a promise
A stated payout target or dividend policy helps explain how management and the board frame distributions, but it is not a guarantee. BCE says dividend decisions are subject to board discretion. TELUS also ties decisions to its financial position and outlook. Consider any policy alongside cash generation, investment needs, debt and business prospects; the board’s authority to change future payments remains important.
