Short answer: A standard U.S. Powerball play costs $2. Choose five different white-ball numbers from 1 through 69 and one red Powerball number from 1 through 26, or use Quick Pick. Drawings are held Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Matching all five white balls and the red Powerball wins the jackpot; the white balls can match in any order. The jackpot odds are 1 in 292,201,338, while the odds of winning any prize are about 1 in 24.87.

Rules verified August 10, 2026. This guide explains the U.S. game first. Powerball began selling tickets in the UK on July 21, 2026, but UK prices, lower-tier prizes and jackpot-payment rules are different.

Powerball is sold in 45 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. That is 48 U.S. selling jurisdictions. The official Powerball overview has the current game information, while local lotteries control details such as age requirements, sales cutoffs, online availability and claim deadlines.

How to buy a Powerball ticket

  1. Check the local rules first. You must meet the selling jurisdiction’s legal-age requirement, and you must buy before that jurisdiction’s cutoff. Cutoff times differ, and a purchase after the cutoff may be issued for the next drawing instead of the one you intended.
  2. Use an authorized source. Buy from an authorized retailer or, where permitted, the official lottery website for that jurisdiction. Cross-border online and mail purchases are restricted. A third-party website or courier is not automatically an official lottery seller, and its ticket or prize-payment arrangements may not be honored. The Powerball FAQ explains the general restrictions.
  3. Choose your numbers. Select five different white-ball numbers from 1 through 69 and one red Powerball number from 1 through 26. You can mark numbers yourself or request a Quick Pick. The red number is drawn from a separate pool, so it may have the same numerical value as one of your white numbers.
  4. Choose add-ons, if available. Power Play costs an additional $1 per play. Double Play also costs $1 per play. Availability is jurisdiction-specific, and Idaho and Montana bundle Power Play with the base game.
  5. Review the printed ticket immediately. Check the numbers, drawing date, number of plays, selected add-ons and total price before leaving the retailer. The processed ticket—not the playslip—is your proof of purchase. Some jurisdictions do not allow a processed play to be canceled; for example, see the Maryland Lottery’s additional rules.
  6. Secure and verify the ticket. Keep the ticket dry and safe, then check the winning numbers through the official Powerball website or the lottery that sold the ticket. Each line is evaluated separately. You cannot combine numbers from different lines or tickets.

Example of one valid play

White balls: 07, 18, 32, 54, 68
Powerball: 18

This is a valid example because the five white numbers are different. The red 18 is allowed to duplicate the white 18 because it comes from a separate number pool. The example has no better chance than any other valid combination.

How Powerball matching works

There are nine standard U.S. prize levels. The five white balls may match in any order; they do not have to appear in the same order on your ticket and in the drawing. The red Powerball must match the red number drawn.

For example, if your white numbers are 7, 18, 32, 54 and 68, you match all five white balls whether they are drawn as 68, 7, 54, 18 and 32 or in another order. A line wins based on its own white numbers and its own red Powerball. A white number on one line cannot be combined with a white number on another line to create a prize.

The phrase Powerball only has a precise meaning: you must match the red Powerball and none of the five white balls. Matching the red number is not automatically a 1-in-26 event, because the Powerball-only tier also requires that all five white numbers be different from the drawn white numbers.

U.S. Powerball prizes and odds

The following is the standard U.S. prize chart for a $2 base play. California is an important exception: its lower-tier prizes are pari-mutuel and can vary based on sales and the number of winners, rather than always matching the fixed amounts below. See the official Powerball prize chart and the California Lottery’s Powerball rules.

Match Standard U.S. prize Odds per $2 play
5 white + Powerball Jackpot 1 in 292,201,338
5 white only $1,000,000 1 in 11,688,053.52
4 white + Powerball $50,000 1 in 913,129.18
4 white only $100 1 in 36,525.17
3 white + Powerball $100 1 in 14,494.11
3 white only $7 1 in 579.76
2 white + Powerball $7 1 in 701.33
1 white + Powerball $4 1 in 91.98
Powerball only $4 1 in 38.32

The table’s overall odds of about 1 in 24.87 include small prizes such as $4 and $7. Winning any prize does not necessarily mean making a profit: a $4 prize, for example, may not cover the cost of a play that also included Power Play or Double Play.

Power Play: higher non-jackpot prizes

Power Play costs $1 more per play. It can increase eligible non-jackpot prizes, but it does not increase the chance of matching the numbers and does not increase the jackpot or jackpot payout.

The multiplier is selected randomly for each drawing. A 2X, 3X, 4X or 5X multiplier can be available depending on the drawing. A 10X multiplier is available only when the advertised annuity jackpot is $150 million or less.

A Match 5-only prize with Power Play is always $2 million, regardless of the multiplier selected. Other eligible non-jackpot prizes are increased according to the applicable multiplier and game rules. Power Play is not offered in California because California uses a pari-mutuel prize system.

Idaho and Montana bundle Power Play with the base game, so the minimum price there is $3 per play rather than $2. That does not mean those players have better number-matching odds; the extra dollar buys the Power Play feature.

Double Play: a separate drawing

Double Play is not another multiplier. For an additional $1 per play, your same numbers are entered into a separate drawing held after the main Powerball drawing. A line can win in both drawings, but the prizes are paid separately. Power Play does not multiply Double Play prizes.

Double Play is not available everywhere. The official Double Play page currently lists 30 participating lotteries, so check your local lottery before adding it.

Match in Double Play drawing Double Play prize
5 white + Powerball $10,000,000
5 white only $500,000
4 white + Powerball $50,000
4 white only $500
3 white + Powerball $500
3 white only $20
2 white + Powerball $20
1 white + Powerball $10
Powerball only $7

In an ordinary jurisdiction, a play with both add-ons costs $4: $2 for the base game, $1 for Power Play and $1 for Double Play. The official Double Play prize chart has the current details.

Can you improve your odds of winning?

There is no number-selection system that predicts or guarantees a Powerball win. Every distinct valid combination has the same probability. Quick Pick and manually selected numbers use the same number matrix and drawing process, so neither has better per-play odds.

  • Hot, cold and overdue numbers: Past draws do not make a number more or less likely in the next independent drawing.
  • Birthdays and lucky numbers: They may be meaningful personally, but they do not change the probability of the combination.
  • Sequences and patterns: A sequence may look unusual, but it is no less likely than a scattered combination.
  • Power Play: It can increase an eligible non-jackpot payout, not the chance of matching numbers.
  • Double Play: It adds a separate drawing opportunity with a different prize table, not a better chance in the main drawing.

Buying more distinct plays is the straightforward way to increase the chance of holding a winning combination, but it also increases the cost. Ten different base plays cost $20 and give a jackpot chance of 10 in 292,201,338—approximately 1 in 29.22 million. That is ten times the one-play chance, but it remains extremely small.

Choosing less popular combinations may reduce the chance of sharing a jackpot with other winners if your numbers happen to win. It does not improve the chance that your numbers will be drawn. This is a possible payout-splitting consideration, not a winning strategy or game rule.

U.S. state and jurisdiction differences

The basic U.S. number matrix and advertised game structure are consistent, but the practical rules are not identical everywhere. Before purchasing, confirm:

  • the minimum legal age;
  • the sales cutoff for the intended drawing;
  • whether online purchases are available and what location restrictions apply;
  • whether Power Play and Double Play are offered;
  • how winning tickets must be signed or claimed;
  • whether winner names are public; and
  • the ticket’s exact expiration date.

California’s pari-mutuel prizes

California does not simply pay the standard fixed amounts shown in the national chart for lower-tier prizes. Those prizes are pari-mutuel, so the amount can vary with sales and the number of winners. California also does not offer Power Play.

Idaho and Montana’s bundled Power Play

Idaho and Montana include Power Play with the base play, making the minimum price $3. The bundle changes the price and non-jackpot payout feature, not the odds of drawing a particular combination.

Jackpot cash option versus annuity

A jackpot winner generally chooses between an annuity and a cash option:

Choice What it means
Annuity One immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments, with each payment increasing by 5%.
Cash option One lump-sum payment representing the present funding value needed to fund the estimated annuity.

The advertised jackpot is the estimated annuity total, not a guaranteed lump-sum cash payment. The cash option is lower because it is the present value of the money needed to fund the future annuity payments—not because the winner is being taxed twice.

Both advertised amounts are before federal and applicable state or local taxes. The amounts remain estimates until sales are final and, for the annuity, the required securities are purchased. If more than one jackpot-winning play exists, the jackpot is divided among the winning plays.

Payment elections and deadlines are set by the lottery that sold the ticket. If an annuity winner dies before all payments are made, the remaining payments generally pass to the winner’s estate, subject to applicable jurisdictional law. A large winner should obtain independent legal and tax advice before selecting a payment option.

What to do if you win

  1. Verify the result through an official source. Compare the ticket with the official Powerball results or the lottery that sold it. Do not rely on social media posts or an unsolicited message.
  2. Protect the physical ticket. Store it securely and avoid posting a photograph of it online. A ticket can contain information someone else could try to use.
  3. Do not assume the nearest lottery can pay it. You must claim the prize in the jurisdiction where the ticket was purchased. Retailers can generally pay prizes up to $600; larger prizes usually require a lottery office or headquarters.
  4. Check the deadline immediately. Claim periods typically range from 90 days to one year, but the exact deadline depends on the selling jurisdiction and may be printed on the ticket or published by the local lottery.
  5. Ask the selling lottery about signing and privacy before taking action. Do not automatically sign, transfer, assign, mail or publicly photograph a valuable ticket before checking the local rules. Some jurisdictions require or recommend a signature for protection, while others permit a trust or legal entity to claim under specific conditions. Even where an entity claim is permitted, the purchaser must still be identified to the lottery.
  6. Get professional advice for a major prize. Before public disclosure or choosing cash versus annuity, contact the lottery directly and consult qualified legal and tax professionals. Anonymity rules vary: some jurisdictions may allow a trust or entity, while others must disclose the winner’s name, city, game and prize.

Powerball taxes in the U.S.

For U.S. taxpayers, lottery winnings are fully taxable income and must be reported even if no Form W-2G is issued. The IRS says gambling losses may be deductible only if you itemize deductions, only up to the amount of reported gambling income, and only when you have appropriate records. See IRS Topic 419.

For 2026, federal gambling withholding is generally 24% when the applicable lottery-withholding conditions are met and the winnings minus the wager exceed $5,000. Withholding is an advance payment toward tax, not necessarily the winner’s final federal tax bill. State and local taxes vary. Review the IRS 2026 Form W-2G instructions for the applicable federal rules.

There is no responsible universal take-home calculation. The final result depends on citizenship and residency, the selling jurisdiction, payment choice, other income, deductions, tax year and applicable state or local taxes. Non-U.S. winners can face different U.S. withholding and reporting rules.

UK Powerball rules: keep them separate from the U.S. game

UK note: Powerball began selling tickets in the UK on July 21, 2026. UK tickets cost £4 and contribute to the shared jackpot, but the lower-tier prizes are different and are administered through the UK National Lottery. UK jackpot winners receive an annuity rather than the U.S.-style choice between cash and annuity.

Do not use the U.S. $2 price, U.S. fixed-prize table or U.S. cash-option explanation to estimate the value of a UK ticket. Consult the Powerball UK launch information and the UK Gambling Commission’s Powerball guidance for UK-specific rules.

Scams and responsible play

An official lottery will not demand an upfront fee to release a prize, and official lotteries do not unexpectedly contact people to announce that they have won. If someone asks for a processing fee, gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency payment or bank details before a claim, treat it as a scam. Verify the ticket independently and contact the lottery in the jurisdiction where it was purchased using contact information from its official website.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Powerball is entertainment, not an investment or a reliable way to make money. Set a fixed spending limit, use only money you can afford to lose and do not borrow money or chase losses. The official responsible-play resources provide additional help.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: For the U.S. game, buy a $2 play before the local cutoff, choose five different white numbers from 1–69 and one red Powerball from 1–26, and remember that every valid combination has the same odds. Power Play raises eligible non-jackpot payouts; Double Play creates a separate drawing; neither improves the jackpot odds. Check the printed ticket, protect it, claim it where it was purchased before the local deadline, and treat the advertised jackpot as a pretax annuity estimate rather than a guaranteed cash payment.
