How to choose an LED bulb that fits
Start with the fixture and the bulb it currently uses. Note the bulb’s shape and base, and check any markings on the fixture or its manual. A standard-looking screw base does not guarantee that every bulb shape will work: lamps, pendants, ceiling fixtures, fans, sconces, recessed cans, and accent lights can call for different forms. ENERGY STAR’s lighting guide recommends choosing a shape suited to the application.
Before ordering, compare the product listing with the old bulb and fixture. Make sure the listed shape and base match, and check any fixture limits on bulb size or wattage. If the fixture has a dimmer, confirm that the listing says the bulb is dimmable and compatible with the dimmer; do not assume every LED bulb will dim properly.
How bright should the bulb be?
Use lumens to compare light output. ENERGY STAR explains that brightness is measured in lumens, not watts. The watt-equivalent number on an LED package or listing compares its light output with an incandescent bulb; it is not the LED’s actual power draw.

These are ENERGY STAR’s minimum lumen equivalents; the page does not state a publication year. Choose a lumen level that suits the room and task, then use the fixture’s wattage limit to confirm the bulb is suitable. ENERGY STAR advises choosing the lowest-wattage bulb that supplies the needed light.
What color temperature should you choose?
Color temperature, measured in Kelvin (K), describes whether light looks warmer or cooler. ENERGY STAR’s consumer guide says lower Kelvin is warmer and more yellow, while higher Kelvin is cooler and bluer. Its approximate categories are:

- Neutral or cool white: about 3500–4100K.
- Daylight: about 5000–6500K.
These ranges appear in ENERGY STAR’s 2020 consumer guide. Color names can vary between brands, so compare the Kelvin number in the listing rather than relying on a label such as “soft white” alone.
What to check in the Amazon listing
Read the product details and package information together. ENERGY STAR’s lighting guide describes the Lighting Facts label as a place to find information such as brightness, life, light appearance, and energy use. For an online order, look for equivalent specifications in the listing and confirm they meet your needs.

- Lumens provide the brightness you want; watt-equivalent wording is not actual LED wattage.
- Kelvin rating matches the color appearance you prefer.
- Dimmability is stated if you need a dimmable bulb.
- Pack quantity is correct, especially when the title or image shows multiple bulbs.
- Any certification you require is actually identified in the listing; do not infer certification from a product image alone.

Amazon’s U.S. return guidance says eligibility depends on the item. Amazon describes most items as returnable within 30 days of delivery when they meet its conditions, but the item-specific terms control. - Find the bulb order and select Return or replace items, if that option is available.
- Choose the reason that best describes the problem and follow the instructions shown for that order.
- If offered a replacement, check the return deadline and replacement details. Amazon says the original item may need to be returned by the specified date to avoid a charge for keeping both items.
Replacement availability depends on stock. Amazon says a replacement may ship only after the original is returned; if no replacement is available, you may need to return the item and place a new order.
