Pickup is usually the lower-cost option because you drive to the store, while delivery can save time but may add service, delivery, or minimum-order fees.
You will need a Walmart account, a selected store or delivery address, and a payment method. Before adding items, choose your fulfillment method and reserve a time slot. Walmart’s available stores, products, fees, and delivery windows depend on your location.
Pickup, delivery, and shipping are different
Walmart’s online checkout may combine several types of orders, so check which option applies to each item:

Not every product is eligible for pickup or delivery. Shipped products also follow different rules: Walmart does not substitute shipping items when they are out of stock.

How to place a Walmart grocery order
- Sign in to Walmart.com or open the Walmart app. Create an account if you do not already have one.
- On the homepage, select How do you want your items?
- Choose Pickup or Delivery.
- Confirm the store for pickup or the delivery address. Walmart may show more than one eligible store.
- Reserve an available time slot.
- Add groceries to your cart. Product availability and prices can change while you shop.
- Open the cart and select Checkout in the pickup or delivery section.
- If the cart contains both store-fulfilled and shipped items, select Checkout all items to place them together when Walmart offers that choice.
- Review the fulfillment method, substitution choices, payment method, fees, taxes, and time slot.
- Select the final checkout button displayed by Walmart to place the order.
Walmart recommends reserving a time slot before filling the cart. The reservation is temporary: you must complete checkout by the deadline shown on the site or app, or Walmart may release the slot.
How Walmart pickup works
Choose How do you want your items? > Pickup, select a participating store, and reserve a time. After Walmart gathers the order and marks it ready, use the app, confirmation email, or text-message link to check in:
- Select I’m on my way.
- Drive to the store during your pickup window.
- Park in a space marked Curbside Pickup.
- Select I’ve parked in the app.
- Enter the parking-space number and your vehicle color.
- Wait for an associate to bring the order to your vehicle.
If the app check-in fails, call the number printed on the curbside parking sign or included in your confirmation email.
Adding another pickup person
You do not have to collect the order yourself. During checkout, open Review Your Order, select Edit next to Pickup person, enter the other person’s name and email address, and select Save.

You can also add someone after ordering through Account > Purchase History. Open the order, select Edit next to Pickup person, add the person’s details, and save the change.
How Walmart grocery delivery works
- Select How do you want your items? and choose Delivery.
- Confirm or enter the delivery address.
- Choose a delivery store if Walmart offers multiple stores.
- Select an available delivery time slot.
- Add groceries and complete checkout.
A local third-party driver usually handles the delivery. Walmart sends a notification when the driver is on the way, and some deliveries can take up to two hours after dispatch. Walmart displays any PIN or signature requirement during checkout, so make sure someone is available if the order requires one.
If delivery is unavailable, Walmart may say that delivery is not available from the selected store but can come from a nearby store. It may instead say delivery is not available for the address. If no eligible store appears, use pickup or shipping.
Delivery fees, Walmart+, and the $35 threshold
Check the final checkout screen rather than relying on a general fee estimate. Walmart says fees vary by location, order type, membership status, and order total.

The $35 rule is not a universal pickup minimum. Walmart says some pickup minimums can be waived when a SNAP EBT card is linked, while other rules depend on the order and location. Treat the amount and fee breakdown shown at checkout as the authoritative total.
Taxes and the final charge can also change after the order is picked. This is especially common with weighted products such as produce, meat, or deli items. Walmart may place a temporary card authorization to account for substitutions, weighted items, replacement products, and applicable bag fees.
Substitutions and missing groceries
For pickup and delivery, Walmart may replace an unavailable product with a similar item. Before placing the order, look for Review or edit your substitution preferences. Select Edit beside an item to choose a replacement, search for another alternative, or reject substitutions for that product.
A replacement can cost more than the product you originally selected. Walmart may charge the actual price of a higher-priced substitution. If you do not respond to a substitution notification within the period shown, Walmart may proceed with the replacement.

- Pickup: You can refuse a substitution when you collect the order.
- Delivery: The driver cannot take an unwanted replacement back to the store. Start a return through Purchase History instead.
- Out-of-stock item: If no acceptable replacement is available, the item may be removed and the final charge adjusted.
Temporary authorization holds can remain visible even after an adjustment. Walmart says card refunds may take up to seven business days.

Walmart accepts credit cards, debit cards, PayPal, Walmart gift cards, Walmart Balance, Pay by Bank, and certain benefit cards. In participating states, SNAP EBT cards can be added for eligible food purchases.
To add a payment method, use this path in the app or on Walmart.com:
- Select Account.
- Select the Settings gear.
- Select Wallet.
- Select Add new payment method.
- Choose the payment type and enter the details.
- Select Save Card.
Using SNAP EBT online
- Go to Walmart.com/snap.
- Sign in or create a Walmart account.
- Add the SNAP EBT card to Walmart Wallet.
- Use the SNAP EBT filter or look for the SNAP EBT eligible badge.
- Add eligible food items and proceed through checkout.
- Use another payment method for delivery fees, noneligible products, and any remaining balance.
SNAP benefits do not pay for delivery charges or noneligible items. Link the card before shopping so the site can identify eligible products and show the correct payment split.

Editing, rescheduling, or canceling an order
For an eligible order, go to Account > Purchase History and open it. Select Edit items before the cutoff shown in the order banner. Walmart may let you add or remove products, change quantities, change substitution preferences, or reschedule the pickup or delivery time once.
To reschedule, select View details > Reschedule. To request cancellation, open the order, scroll to the bottom, and select Request Cancellation if that option is available.
You generally cannot change pickup to delivery—or delivery to pickup—after checkout. Request cancellation and place a new order instead. Walmart may show a special conversion option for a delayed delivery, but that is an exception rather than a standard edit.
Common Walmart grocery-order problems

| Wrong delivery address | For eligible orders, use Edit beside the address on Order Details. You may need to enter the card CVV and review updated fees and dates. FAQ
Is there a $35 minimum for Walmart grocery pickup?
Not in every situation. Minimums and fee rules depend on the order and location. Walmart says some pickup minimums may be waived when SNAP EBT is linked. Check the checkout total for your specific order.
Does Walmart+ make grocery delivery free?
Walmart+ currently advertises free delivery from your store on qualifying orders of at least $35. Orders below $35 may incur a $6.99 minimum-order fee, and Express Delivery can have additional fees.
Can I change a Walmart pickup order to delivery after placing it?
Usually not. The normal solution is to request cancellation through Account > Purchase History and place a new delivery order. Walmart may offer a conversion option for certain delayed deliveries.
What happens if Walmart substitutes an item I do not want?
You can reject the substitution at pickup. For delivery, the driver cannot take it back to the store; use Purchase History to start a return. A higher-priced replacement may be charged at its actual price.

Pickup is generally the simpler way to limit delivery costs. For delivery, check the $35 threshold, membership status, service fees, substitutions, and possible changes to weighted-item charges before submitting payment.
