An ink-tank printer costs more upfront than a typical cartridge model, but its refill bottles can make regular color printing substantially cheaper. The trade-off is that the printer still needs maintenance: printhead nozzles can clog when it sits unused, and advertised page yields are estimates rather than household guarantees.
For most home offices, the Epson EcoTank ET-4950 is the strongest all-around choice. The Canon MAXIFY GX4020 is better suited to heavier document workloads and easier service access, while the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500 is the specialist pick for photographs and creative projects. Buyers who want to spend less initially should look at the Canon PIXMA G3270, provided they can live without automatic duplex printing, an ADF, fax, and Ethernet.
Availability note: Epson introduced the ET-4950 and ET-3950 on July 7, 2025. That makes the ET-3850 a relevant older comparison, but not Epson’s newest midrange EcoTank model.

1. Epson EcoTank ET-4950: best overall for a home office
The ET-4950 is the most balanced choice when a household wants low refill costs without giving up office basics. It prints, copies, scans, and faxes, has automatic two-sided printing, and holds up to 250 sheets in its paper tray. Epson rates it at up to 18 pages per minute.

- Epson EcoTank Wireless All-in-One Ink Tank Printer – Cartridge-Free System, High-Capacity Ink Bottles, Mobile Printing, Auto Duplex
- WORRY-FREE PRINTING — Epson EcoTank comes with enough ink to print up to 6,600 pages black/5,500 color⁹ for fewer out-of-ink frustrations. Each replacement ink bottle set is equivalent to about 80 cartridges¹⁰
- SIMPLE INK REFILLING — Supersized ink tanks and uniquely keyed EcoFit bottles make refilling ink simple—no mess, no stress and no ink bottle mix-ups
- THE WORLD’S #1 SELLING SUPERTANK PRINTER² — Epson invented EcoTank to revolutionize the way people print; we’ve sold 100 million EcoTanks worldwide⁷ and this is our 7th generation of cartridge-free printers
- ADVANCED PRODUCTIVITY FEATURES — Fast 18 black/9 color ISO ppm print speeds with zero warmup time, an Auto Document Feeder, fax, a high-capacity 250-sheet paper tray, auto duplex printing, copying and scanning, and a 2.4" color display for easy navigation
Its advertised features make it a better fit than a cheap tank printer for tax documents, schoolwork, invoices, and multi-page forms. Automatic duplex printing also reduces paper use, although the savings depend on whether you actually print documents on both sides.
Epson lists a manufacturer direct price of $499.99, checked August 8, 2026. That is not a permanent street price, so compare current retailer prices before treating it as the printer’s normal market cost. Epson also advertises up to three years of included ink, but that wording is based on estimated use and should not be interpreted as a guaranteed three-calendar-year supply.
Best for: a home office that regularly prints documents, needs an ADF and duplex printing, and prefers a current EcoTank design.
2. Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500: best for photos
The ET-8500 is a different kind of tank printer. It uses a six-color photo-oriented ink system rather than the four-color configuration commonly used in document-focused models. That extra specialization is useful for photographs, greeting cards, creative projects, and other prints where color and tonal detail matter more than the lowest possible purchase price.
Epson says the printer supports its Signature Worthy media, cardstock, and specialty media up to 1.3 mm thick. That gives it more flexibility than a basic office tank printer.
The financial question is whether those capabilities will be used. If most of your pages are black-and-white forms, shipping labels, or ordinary school assignments, paying for a six-color photo system may not produce enough value to justify the higher purchase price. A four-color document model is usually the more rational choice for routine printing.
Best for: families and hobbyists who print photos and creative work often enough to avoid leaving the printer idle for months.

3. Canon MAXIFY MegaTank GX4020: best for small-office documents and serviceability
The GX4020 is designed around document work. Its four-color pigment-ink system is a strong match for reports, forms, and business correspondence. Canon rates it at up to 18 ipm in black and 13 ipm in color.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPaper capacity is useful for a busier desk: there is a 250-sheet cassette and a 100-sheet rear tray. It also includes automatic duplex printing, a 35-sheet ADF, fax, a 2.7-inch touchscreen, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and USB.
Its biggest money-saving advantage is long-term maintenance access. Canon lists both a user-replaceable printhead and a user-replaceable maintenance cartridge. Those parts do not make the printer maintenance-free, but they may reduce the chance that a clogged printhead or full maintenance system immediately turns into a replacement-printer purchase.
Canon states a maximum monthly duty cycle of up to 33,000 pages. That is a capability ceiling, not a sensible monthly target for a household. It should not be used to justify buying the GX4020 for a workload that does not need its document features.
Best for: a home business or small office that prints frequently, wants Ethernet, and values replaceable service parts.

4. HP Smart Tank 7602: best touchscreen and feature set
The Smart Tank 7602 combines a touchscreen interface with the features many home offices want: automatic two-sided printing, a 35-sheet ADF, fax, Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi, and a 250-sheet input tray. It also supports USB-flash printing.
HP states that the included bottles yield up to 6,000 black pages and 8,000 color pages. These are manufacturer estimates based on specified test conditions. Pages with large photos or heavy color coverage can consume ink much faster, and repeated cleaning cycles also affect real-world consumption.

- Innovative Cartridge-Free Printing ― High-capacity ink tanks mean no more tiny, expensive ink cartridges; Epson’s exclusive EcoFit ink bottles make filling easy and worry-free
- Impressive Print Quality ― Unique Micro Piezo Heat-Free Technology produces sharp text – plus impressive color photos and graphics – on virtually any paper type
- Zero Cartridge Waste – By using an EcoTank printer, you can help reduce the amount of cartridge waste ending up in landfills
- Built-in Scanner & Copier ― High-resolution flatbed scanner and a color display for easy document copying and navigation
Independent testing from RTINGS found the HP 7602 and Epson ET-3850 similar overall. The HP had better build quality and a touchscreen, while the Epson produced more saturated photos. Both showed poor measured color accuracy in that testing, so neither should be treated as a color-critical photo printer simply because it uses refillable tanks.
There are two details worth checking before buying. First, the 35-sheet ADF is not a duplex scanner: it can feed multiple pages, but it does not automatically scan both sides of a two-sided original. Second, HP’s “Perfectly Formatted Prints with HP AI” feature has specific requirements. For qualifying Windows 11 setups, HP gives this path to disable it: Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > [printer] > Printing preferences, then turn off Enable HP AI by default.
Best for: buyers who prioritize a touchscreen and broad home-office functionality over the best photo output.
5. Canon PIXMA G3270: best inexpensive basic tank printer
The G3270 is the sensible low-complexity option. It prints, copies, and scans over Wi-Fi or USB, supports mobile printing and borderless printing, and uses Canon GI-21 ink bottles.
Canon rates it at approximately 11.0 ipm in black and 6.0 ipm in color. That is noticeably slower than the GX4020, ET-4950, and HP 7602. More importantly, Canon’s specification sheet describes the G3270 as single-sided. It should not be assumed to offer automatic duplex printing simply because it belongs to Canon’s MegaTank family.
There is no ADF, fax, or Ethernet. Those omissions can be positives if they keep the purchase price and complexity down, but they make the G3270 a poor choice for a small office that scans multi-page documents or needs wired networking.

What ink-tank ownership really costs
The headline savings come from buying bottles instead of cartridges, but the purchase decision should include more than the price printed on an ink bottle.
- Upfront price: tank printers generally cost more than entry-level cartridge printers. The extra cost only pays off if you print enough pages to use the lower refill cost.
- Actual page coverage: “6,000 black pages” and “8,000 color pages” are test-based estimates. A page full of graphics is not financially equivalent to a lightly printed letter.
- Paper: automatic duplexing can lower paper consumption. The G3270’s lack of automatic duplexing may matter more over several years than a small difference in bottle price.
- Maintenance ink: printhead cleaning uses ink. Frequent cleaning can also accelerate the need to empty or replace a waste-ink or maintenance system.
- Downtime and replacement: a printer that sits unused and develops clogged nozzles may cost more in troubleshooting, wasted ink, and frustration than its advertised refill savings suggest.
A practical break-even calculation is:
Break-even pages = extra purchase price of the tank printer ÷ estimated savings per printed page.
For example, if a tank printer costs $180 more than a cartridge model and saves an estimated 5 cents per page, it would take about 3,600 pages to recover the difference. That is only a planning estimate: use your own refill prices, paper costs, and expected mix of black-and-white and color pages.

Ink-tank printers are not maintenance-free
Ink generally dries at the printhead nozzles, not inside the bulk tank. The printer can still show a full tank while producing missing lines, streaks, or faded colors. Regular use helps keep ink moving; HP recommends printing at least once a week.
When output looks wrong, start with a nozzle check instead of repeatedly printing the same document. On the Epson ET-3850, the documented control-panel path is:
Home button > Maintenance > Print Head Nozzle Check > Print
If the pattern has gaps, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning procedure and avoid running cleaning cycles endlessly. Cleaning consumes ink. If a tank was filled with the wrong color, stop filling and printing and consult the model’s service instructions rather than trying to dilute the mistake with the correct ink.

For people who print only a few pages several times a year, a laser printer may be a better financial fit. Toner does not dry out in the same way liquid ink can, so the higher per-page purchase price of a tank printer may not compensate for its inactivity risk.
Which printer should you buy?
- Choose the Epson ET-4950 for the best general home-office balance.
- Choose the Epson ET-8500 if photo and specialty-media quality is the priority.
- Choose the Canon GX4020 for heavier document printing, Ethernet, pigment text, and user-replaceable service parts.
- Choose the HP Smart Tank 7602 if you want a touchscreen, USB-flash printing, and a broad feature set.
- Choose the Canon G3270 if the goal is a simpler, lower-cost tank printer and single-sided printing is acceptable.
- Choose a laser printer instead if you print only a handful of pages per year.
FAQ
Are ink-tank printers cheaper than cartridge printers?
They can be cheaper for regular color printing because refill bottles generally deliver more pages at a lower ongoing cost. The calculation should include the tank printer’s higher upfront price, paper, maintenance ink, and the risk of clogging when the printer is rarely used.
Which ink-tank printer is best for a home office?
The Epson EcoTank ET-4950 is the best overall fit in this comparison because it combines automatic duplex printing, a 250-sheet tray, an ADF, fax, and an advertised speed of up to 18 pages per minute. The Canon MAXIFY GX4020 is a better alternative for heavier document workloads and easier maintenance access.
Do all ink-tank printers print automatically on both sides?
No. Duplex printing is model-specific. The Epson ET-4950, HP Smart Tank 7602, and Canon GX4020 support automatic two-sided printing. Canon’s PIXMA G3270 is listed as single-sided.
Can an ink-tank printer dry out?
The tank itself may remain filled, but ink can dry at the printhead nozzles when the printer is unused for long periods. Printing at least weekly can help reduce the risk. If you print only a few times a year, consider a laser printer instead.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Epson EcoTank ET-4950 is the safest all-purpose recommendation for a regularly used home office. The Canon MAXIFY GX4020 is the more practical small-office machine if document volume, Ethernet, pigment ink, and replaceable parts matter. Buy the Epson ET-8500 for photos, the HP Smart Tank 7602 for its interface and feature set, or the Canon G3270 when a basic low-refill-cost printer is enough. Whichever model you choose, estimate your actual annual pages first: an ink tank is a cost-saving tool for regular printing, not automatically the cheapest printer for every household.
