The cheapest plan includes ads and has a monthly download limit; the two ad-free plans cost more but provide higher simultaneous-device limits, and Premium adds 4K video, HDR, and spatial audio.
Netflix no longer offers a Basic plan in the U.S. Your practical choice comes down to three questions: whether you can tolerate ads, how many people watch at the same time, and whether your TV and internet setup can make use of 4K.
Netflix prices at a glance
| Plan | Monthly price | Approximate annual price* | Video quality | Simultaneous viewing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard with ads | $8.99 | $107.88 | 1080p Full HD | 2 devices |
| Standard | $19.99 | $239.88 | 1080p Full HD | 2 devices |
| Premium | $26.99 | $323.88 | 4K Ultra HD + HDR | 4 devices |
*Annual figures multiply the advertised monthly price by 12 and exclude sales tax or other applicable taxes. Netflix normally bills monthly rather than offering a discounted annual subscription.

A small number of titles are unavailable on this plan because of licensing restrictions. Netflix marks those titles with a lock icon. Ads generally appear around natural breaks in the program, cannot normally be skipped or fast-forwarded, and can be paused.
The plan also has a separate download restriction: up to 15 total downloads per device per calendar month. The allowance resets on the first day of the next month. If Netflix displays “Download Max Reached,” upgrading to an ad-free plan provides additional downloads immediately; otherwise, you must wait for the reset. Individual titles can have separate licensing-related download limits.
Standard: $19.99 per month
Standard removes the regular ads and retains 1080p Full HD video, two simultaneous streams, and downloads on two supported devices. It also allows the account owner to add one extra member for an additional monthly fee.
Compared with Standard with ads, the ad-free version costs $11 more per month, or $132 more over 12 months before tax. That premium buys an uninterrupted catalog experience and removes the ad-plan download ceiling, but it does not improve the picture resolution or increase the simultaneous-stream limit.
Premium: $26.99 per month
Premium includes:
- Ad-free movies, shows, and games
- 4K Ultra HD and HDR where available
- Four simultaneous streams
- Downloads on six supported devices
- Netflix spatial audio
- Up to two extra members
Premium costs $7 more per month than Standard, or $84 more per year before tax. It is most useful when several people regularly watch at once or when you have a compatible 4K television, streaming device, and internet connection. Paying for Premium will not make a title 4K if that title is only available in a lower resolution.

How much do extra members cost?
Netflix accounts are intended for people who live together in one household. For someone outside the household, an eligible account can use an extra-member slot instead of casually sharing the main password.
| Base plan | Extra member with ads | Extra member without ads | Maximum extra members |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $7.99 per month | $9.99 per month | 1 |
| Premium | $7.99 per month each | $9.99 per month each | 2 |
Extra members have their own account and password, but the primary account owner pays for the membership. An extra member can watch on only one supported device at a time, use one profile, and cannot create a Kids profile. Extra members with ads are limited to 1080p and do not receive spatial audio.
Extra members cannot be added to an ad-supported base account. Availability may also be restricted when Netflix is billed through a package or third-party provider.
Example monthly totals
- Standard plus one ad-supported extra member: $27.98 per month
- Standard plus one ad-free extra member: $29.98 per month
- Premium plus one ad-free extra member: $36.98 per month
- Premium plus two ad-free extra members: $46.97 per month
These totals exclude tax. If you are comparing costs with a separate household subscription, remember that Premium plus two extra members is more expensive than three individual ad-supported plans, but it may provide better quality and fewer account-management hassles depending on how the households use Netflix.
What “with ads” actually means
The ad-supported plan is not simply the same catalog with commercials inserted. Netflix says some movies and shows are unavailable because it does not have the necessary advertising-plan rights. Look for the lock icon when browsing.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Netflix says viewers should generally expect a few short ads per hour, placed around natural plot breaks. Ads do not currently appear on Kids profiles or in Netflix games. However, “ad-free” is not an absolute promise that every Netflix experience will contain no commercial breaks: live events, special events, or future features may include commercials on all plans.
Two devices does not mean only two devices total
The device number in a plan describes simultaneous viewing, not the total number of phones, tablets, computers, or TVs that can sign in. For example, Standard can support two people watching at the same time even if the account is used on more than two compatible devices at different times.
Recommended Free Tools
An account can have up to five individual profiles. Profiles keep recommendations and watch histories separate, but they do not increase the plan’s simultaneous-stream limit.
Which Netflix plan is the best value?
| Your situation | Likely fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want the lowest monthly bill and do not mind commercials | Standard with ads | Lowest price, 1080p, and two simultaneous streams |
| One or two people watch, and ads are a deal-breaker | Standard | Ad-free viewing without paying for 4K or four streams |
| Three or four people often watch at the same time | Premium | Four simultaneous devices |
| You own a 4K/HDR setup and value higher picture quality | Premium | Includes 4K, HDR, and spatial audio |
| You frequently download shows on an ad-supported plan | Standard or Premium | Ad-free plans avoid the 15-download-per-device monthly cap |
For a single viewer watching occasionally, Standard with ads is the clear low-cost option. Standard is harder to justify purely for image quality because it remains 1080p; its main benefit is removing regular ads. Premium earns its higher price when you will actually use 4K, four concurrent streams, six download devices, or spatial audio.

How to change your Netflix plan
- Open Netflix’s Change Plan page in a browser.
- Select the new plan.
- Choose Continue or Update.
- Select Confirm Change or Confirm.
Upgrading normally takes effect immediately. Netflix may adjust your billing date or charge a prorated amount. Downgrading takes effect on the next billing date, so the higher plan’s features remain available until then.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe change option may not appear if a Kids profile is active, the account is on hold or paused, or a partner handles billing. In those cases, resolve the account issue or manage the subscription through the billing provider.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Taxes, billing dates, and checking the real charge
The advertised U.S. prices do not include sales tax where tax applies. Netflix calculates applicable tax using the local rate and billing ZIP code and lists it separately on the invoice. A $19.99 plan, for example, may cost more than $19.99 when the monthly charge posts.
Netflix normally bills once a month on the date the account began. The charge starts at the beginning of the billing cycle but can take several days to appear on your card or bank statement. If your billing date is the 31st and a month does not have a 31st, Netflix bills on that month’s last day. A third-party provider can use a different billing date.
To verify what you are actually paying, sign in and open your account’s Payment History page. This is more reliable than relying on a remembered advertised price, especially if you have added an extra member, changed plans, or pay through a bundle.

How to cancel or pause Netflix
- Open Manage your membership in a browser.
- Select Cancel.
- Under Cancel, select Finish Cancellation.
Signing out or deleting the Netflix app does not cancel the membership. After cancellation, you can normally continue watching until the end of the paid billing period.
If the cancellation option is missing, check Account → Membership to identify the payment partner. You may need to cancel through that provider instead of Netflix.
Eligible accounts may also see Pause for 1 Month. A paused account cannot stream or download, but you can browse and add titles to My List. Accounts can generally be paused for up to three months total, although the option is unavailable with some payment methods.

Can I share Netflix with someone who does not live with me?
Netflix describes an account as being for one household. An eligible Standard or Premium account may add an extra member for $7.99 per month with ads or $9.99 without ads. Extra members cannot be added to an ad-supported base account.
Can I cancel Netflix by deleting the app?
No. Deleting the app or signing out does not cancel billing. In a browser, open Manage your membership, select Cancel, and then choose Finish Cancellation. If Netflix bills you through a partner, cancel through that provider.
The Bottom Line
For U.S. customers, Netflix costs $8.99 monthly with ads, $19.99 for ad-free Standard, or $26.99 for Premium, before tax. Choose Standard with ads for the lowest bill, Standard if uninterrupted 1080p viewing matters, and Premium only if you will use 4K, four simultaneous streams, or its other added features. Check Payment History for the amount actually charged, and remember that canceling requires a membership action—not merely deleting the app.
