To reduce Ethereum transaction costs, check the fee estimate immediately before you submit, avoid paying extra for speed when the transaction is not urgent, and consider a Layer 2 network only if it supports the asset and action you need. There is no reliably cheapest hour or universally cheapest network: the cost depends on current demand, the transaction, and the route you take.
What determines an Ethereum gas fee?
On Ethereum mainnet, the fee is the amount of gas a transaction uses multiplied by the price paid per unit of gas. A straightforward ETH transfer uses less gas than many contract interactions, such as swaps or token approvals. Ethereum.org explains the mechanics in its gas and fees overview.
The base fee is set by the protocol and changes with block demand. A priority fee is an additional tip that can help a transaction be included sooner. Wallets typically suggest fee settings, and some let you set a maximum fee. Offering too little may delay a transaction or prevent its inclusion; paying for urgency you do not need can raise its cost.
A transaction that fails during execution can still consume gas and incur a fee. Check the wallet’s estimate and transaction details before confirming, especially when interacting with a contract. Ethereum.org’s gas documentation explains that a standard ETH transfer uses 21,000 gas units. That is a quantity of gas, not a fee or a recommended limit for other transaction types.

How to lower the cost of a mainnet transaction
Check the estimate just before submitting
Fees respond to network demand, so an estimate can change between checking and confirming. Ethereum.org lists Etherscan, Blockscout, ETH Gas Tracker, and Blocknative among the tools users can consult for monitoring or estimation: Ethereum.org’s gas-fee guide. Treat trackers as estimates, not guarantees, and compare them with the fee preview in your wallet immediately before signing.
Wait if the transaction is not time-sensitive
If the current estimate is too high and you do not need the transaction to go through now, wait and check again later. Demand-driven fees do not establish a dependable cheapest weekday or hour, so avoid relying on a fixed schedule. Whether waiting helps depends on network conditions when you submit.

Do not set the gas limit below the wallet’s estimate
The gas limit caps the gas available to execute a transaction; it is not a way to bargain down the price per unit. Setting it too low can make a transaction fail validation or run out of gas during execution, while gas already consumed can still be charged. Use the wallet’s estimate rather than lowering the limit to force a smaller displayed cost.
Skip unnecessary urgency
When your wallet offers fee or speed choices, select a slower option only if its estimated inclusion time works for you. A higher priority fee may improve inclusion priority, but it does not remove the base fee or guarantee a particular outcome.

When a Layer 2 network may cost less
Layer 2 rollups can reduce the per-user share of costs by batching transactions and compressing data before publishing information to Ethereum. Ethereum.org describes Layer 2 scaling as “a primary initiative to greatly improve gas costs, user experience and scalability” in its technical overview. Lower cost does not mean no fee: rollup charges can include data publication, operator fees, and other network-specific components.
Optimistic rollups and ZK rollups have different fee components. Ethereum.org notes that optimistic-rollup costs can include Ethereum data publication, blob costs, and L2 operator fees; ZK-rollup costs can include state writes, data publication, operator fees, and proof-related costs. Blobs use a separate fee market and are not permanent archival storage in the same way as execution-layer history. The exact total varies by network and transaction type; see Ethereum.org’s optimistic-rollup guide and ZK-rollup guide.

Before moving an asset or using an app on an L2, compare the full route rather than just the execution fee. A bridge-in transaction, withdrawal, or delay can change the practical cost. Optimistic-rollup withdrawals to mainnet may involve a challenge window before messages execute. Check the network’s risk assumptions and whether your wallet, asset, and intended application are supported. L2BEAT’s scaling overview provides network risk and cost views; it is useful context, not a substitute for the estimate for your own transaction.

- Choose the colors that match your style: express your personality and your crypto management mood, color code your signers, one for each use (trading, staking, HOLDing...).
- Estimated total for the exact action: Compare the wallet’s current estimate for the transfer, approval, or swap you intend to make.
- Asset and app support: Confirm that the network supports the token and application you need.
- Bridge and withdrawal costs or delays: Include the cost and timing of getting funds onto the network and, if relevant, back to mainnet.
- Risk assumptions: Review the network’s security and data-availability assumptions rather than choosing by fee alone.
- Wallet features: Check whether your wallet supports the route and any batching or sponsorship feature you expect to use.
Because fees and supported routes differ, a low execution estimate alone does not prove that one L2 is the cheapest choice for your situation. For a broader explanation of L2 fees and trade-offs, consult Ethereum.org’s Layer 2 overview alongside the network’s own wallet preview.
Batching and sponsored fees depend on the app
Some wallet or application flows may let users combine actions or have an application sponsor a transaction’s gas. These are features to verify in the particular wallet and app, not capabilities available for every transaction. Ethereum.org’s 2026 discussion of EIP-7702 and account features describes how such options may be supported: Ethereum.org’s Pectra roadmap. Confirm what the feature covers and whether another fee or condition applies before relying on it.
How to interpret published fee figures
Ethereum.org’s May 7, 2026 article reported an Etherscan standard gas reading of about 0.15 gwei on May 5, 2026, and daily averages near 0.5 gwei during April 2026. It also gave illustrative estimates at 0.5 gwei and an ETH price around $2,350: $0.025 for an ETH transfer, $0.076 for an ERC-20 transfer, $0.054 for an ERC-20 approval, and $0.21 for a swap. These are dated, assumption-based examples, not current October 2026 quotes or guaranteed prices: Ethereum.org’s gas-fee guide.
For a live comparison, L2Fees updates continuously. Its figures can change, so check the site and your wallet close to the time of the transaction rather than treating a remembered fee as current. Neither an L2 fee display nor a mainnet tracker guarantees the final cost or ranks every complete route.
