To find out how much power your gaming PC draws while gaming, plug an AC watt meter between the wall outlet and the PC, then record readings at idle and during a representative game. The meter measures power drawn from mains by everything connected through it, including the power supply’s conversion losses. For a changing game load, measure over time and report an average rather than treating one instant’s reading as the PC’s universal draw.

What a wall meter measures—and what it leaves out

A plug-in AC meter measures the mains power used by the devices connected downstream of it. Put only the tower behind the meter to get a tower-only figure; connect the monitor and other equipment through it as well to measure a broader setup. State which boundary you used, because those readings are not directly comparable.

The wall reading includes power-supply conversion losses and internal components beyond the CPU and graphics card. By contrast, software telemetry reports selected sensor readings inside the PC. CPU and GPU sensor values can help explain a workload, but they are not a substitute for total AC draw at the outlet.

How to measure your PC at idle and while gaming

  1. Choose the measurement boundary. Decide whether you want the tower alone or the full desk setup. Connect only the devices you want counted downstream of the meter.
  2. Check the meter and outlet. Make sure the meter’s plug type and electrical rating suit your region and the connected load, and follow its manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Measure idle power. Let the computer settle until background activity has quieted, then record the meter’s watt reading.
  4. Run a representative game. Use the settings and frame-rate conditions that reflect your usual play. Note the game, settings, test duration, and any streaming or other significant background workload.
  5. Capture changing power over time. If the meter can log readings, record them during the session and calculate an average. Alternatively, note the accumulated energy in kWh and divide by elapsed hours to obtain average kW; multiply by 1,000 to express it as average watts.
  6. Report the result clearly. Identify the connected equipment, workload, duration, and whether the number is an instantaneous reading or an average. Use watts for power and kWh for energy accumulated over time.

Intel’s benchmarking methodology recommends measuring total-platform power with an external watt meter or power analyzer and logging it during the timed workload. It describes deriving average power from the log and calculating energy as average power multiplied by workload duration. The document is an older methodology brief, but its measurement boundary and calculation principles apply to this kind of test. Intel, “Procedure for Measuring Energy Efficiency”.

How to turn a reading into electricity use

Watts describe the rate of power use at a moment or as an average over a stated interval. Kilowatt-hours (kWh) describe energy used over time—the unit typically shown on an electricity bill.

To estimate energy from an average watt reading, use: (average watts ÷ 1,000) × hours = kWh. For example, if a meter reports an average of 400 W over a two-hour gaming session, the calculation is (400 ÷ 1,000) × 2 = 0.8 kWh. This is an arithmetic example, not a claim about typical gaming-PC consumption. To estimate cost, multiply the kWh by the applicable price per kWh on your bill; any standing charges or other bill components are separate.

Choosing a meter and interpreting results

Look for a plug-in watt meter that fits your outlet and is rated for the load you intend to connect. For a basic gaming-session check, useful features include a clear watt display and accumulated kWh; logging or a timed average can make fluctuating workloads easier to summarize. Verify the specific model’s rating, plug compatibility, features, availability, and regional suitability before buying. A 2024 consumer how-to named the SURAIELEC Watt Meter as an example, but that mention does not verify a current model, price, accuracy, or suitability for your location. Tom’s Guide, “How to measure your PC’s power usage”.

Do not use a PSU’s rated output as the measured wall draw: the rating describes the supply’s output capability, not what the system currently takes from mains. Likewise, adding CPU and GPU sensor readings misses other components and does not account for PSU conversion losses. Software readings can still be useful as supplementary context, especially when comparing component behavior under a workload.

There is no current representative typical-wattage figure established here for gaming PCs. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s 2016 paper modelled configurations at 923 W, 601 W, and 331 W, including displays, using component and marketplace assumptions from roughly 2014. Those figures are historical modeled examples, not a current expectation for a gaming PC. The paper also notes that energy use depends on configuration, workload, usage mode, and duration. Make measurements comparable

  • Keep the measurement boundary the same: tower-only readings should not be compared with readings that include a monitor or other equipment.
  • Use the same game, settings, frame-rate conditions, and measurement duration when comparing sessions or systems.
  • Note streaming and substantial background activity, which can change the workload.
  • For fluctuating gameplay, compare time-averaged watts or energy over a stated duration, not isolated peaks.
