1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the exchange or wallet provider as a business, then check relevant wallet addresses separately against the sanctions lists that apply to your jurisdiction and transaction. For a U.S. OFAC address lookup, enter the address in the official Sanctions List Search’s ID # field. A no-hit result is not an all-clear: the address search is exact-match, listed addresses may be incomplete, and an address check does not establish whether a provider, owner, customer, or transaction is sanctioned.
First identify what you need to check
“A wallet” can mean a provider, an app or software, or a public-chain address. Those are different subjects of a sanctions check. OFAC’s October 2021 FAQ 559 describes a hosted wallet provider as a business that creates and stores wallets for customers; hosted providers may also offer exchange or payment services. A wallet address, by contrast, is an identifier used as a destination for a transfer.
- Exchange or hosted-wallet provider: Check the business’s legal name, trading names, aliases, and relevant owners or counterparties against applicable sanctions lists. Check registration with the relevant financial regulator where required; registration and sanctions screening answer different questions.
- Wallet software or service: Identify the company or other entity operating it, if any, and screen that entity. A self-custody wallet address is not the same thing as the software provider or its user.
- Public-chain address: Search each relevant address separately using the official tool for the sanctions regime you are checking. Use the correct blockchain and copy the full address accurately.
Decide which laws apply before relying on any one country’s list. Your location, the provider’s location, the transaction, and other jurisdictional connections may matter. An OFAC search is not a substitute for checking UK, Australian, UN, EU, or other applicable regimes.
How to check an address and provider against U.S. OFAC sanctions
- Open OFAC’s official Sanctions List Search. Use the U.S. Treasury’s search tool rather than treating a third-party score or search result as an official determination.
- Search the address. Enter the public-chain address hash in the ID # field. OFAC says address searches use exact matching, not fuzzy logic, so a mistyped character or the wrong chain can produce a no-hit result. OFAC FAQ 562/594 and its October 2021 virtual-currency guidance describe this address-search approach.
- Search the business separately. Search the provider’s legal name and known aliases against the relevant OFAC lists, including the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List (SDN List) and any other lists relevant to the case. Search spelling variations rather than relying on one exact company-name entry; OFAC recommends fuzzy name matching for business screening.
- Review possible matches using more than the name or address. Compare identifiers and context, such as location, registration details, ownership, transaction information, and associated addresses. A name resemblance or indirect blockchain connection alone does not establish a legal match.
- For a business, make screening ongoing. OFAC’s October 2021 guidance describes screening customer information at onboarding, screening transactions and relevant addresses, and risk-based rescreening as lists and information change. A one-time search can become stale.
An address query checks whether that exact submitted identifier appears in the search results. It does not check every address linked to the same person or service, establish who controls an address, or determine whether the provider or transaction is permitted.

What a no-hit result does—and does not—tell you
OFAC may publish digital-currency addresses as identifying information for blocked persons, but says those address listings are not likely to be exhaustive. Therefore, no result means only that the exact address you submitted was not found in that query. It does not mean the exchange or wallet provider is unsanctioned, that connected addresses are clear, or that a proposed transaction is lawful.
- Do not treat an address search as entity screening: a provider can require a separate name, alias, and ownership review.
- Do not assume a single spelling catches a name match; variations may require fuzzy matching and follow-up review.
- Do not treat a vendor’s “risk score” as an official sanctions decision. It can be a lead for investigation, but confirm the underlying identifiers and applicable law.
- Do not infer that a provider’s absence from one country’s list resolves exposure under another jurisdiction’s rules.
- For business risk controls, OFAC guidance discusses reviewing transaction history and associated addresses; blockchain analytics may help identify exposure but do not replace legal review.
Check the relevant local authority too
| Jurisdiction example | What to check | Relevant follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| United States | OFAC SDN and other relevant OFAC lists; use the official Sanctions List Search for exact address queries in the ID # field. | U.S. duties depend on the applicable rules and facts. OFAC guidance describes screening, blocking, and reporting obligations. |
| United Kingdom | Relevant UK sanctions lists and the FCA register, or the equivalent register where the cryptoasset firm is based. The FCA and UK financial regulators’ March 2022 joint statement advises firms to check registration as well as sanctions exposure. | Where the UK legal test applies, the regulators describe obligations to freeze, not deal with or make available relevant assets, and report through the applicable route. |
| Australia | The Australian Sanctions Office (ASO) Consolidated List and Australian sanctions guidance. DFAT’s Digital Currency Exchanges guidance, first published March 8, 2024 and updated July 28, 2026, discusses screening and transaction checks. | Australian guidance describes freezing and reporting crypto held that is owned or controlled by a designated person, alongside due-diligence and transaction-monitoring obligations for digital currency exchanges. |
These are examples, not a complete list of applicable regimes or a decision about which country’s rules govern a particular transaction. A registration check can help establish a firm’s regulatory status; it does not by itself show whether the firm or a transaction is sanctioned.

What to do if you find a possible match
Pause the transaction and do not move, return, or otherwise deal with potentially blocked property merely because an automated service flags or clears it. A possible match needs review under the rules that apply to you. A business should escalate to its sanctions or compliance function; an individual facing a real suspected match should contact the relevant authority or qualified counsel before acting.
For U.S. persons, OFAC says property and interests in property of blocked persons must be blocked, as must property of entities owned 50 percent or more in aggregate by blocked persons, subject to applicable authority, exceptions, and licenses. OFAC FAQ 646 states that blocked virtual currency must be reported within 10 business days and annually while it remains blocked. Those threshold and reporting details are U.S.-specific; they are not worldwide rules.
