Check your SecureSpend balance and recent transactions using the official website or customer-service number printed on your card or packaging. The SecureSpend cardholder agreement reviewed for this guide says both options are available at no charge. Your card’s own agreement controls: terms and contact details can vary by card version.
Check your balance and transaction history safely
- Find the contact details on your card or packaging. Use the official balance-check website or customer-service number printed there. Avoid lookalike balance-check sites and phone numbers from unverified search results.
- Check both your available balance and recent transactions. A pending authorization or temporary hold may make the amount you can spend lower than the balance you expected.
- Compare the available amount with the full purchase total. Leave room for any merchant authorization that may temporarily reduce available funds.
The SecureSpend-branded agreement reviewed for this guide identifies Pathward, National Association as issuer and is effective July 1, 2022. It describes a U.S.-only physical card. Do not assume those terms apply to every card with the SecureSpend name; check the agreement that came with yours. SecureSpend
Why your available balance may differ from a purchase amount
The purchase costs more than the available balance
A purchase that exceeds the available balance will generally be declined. Ask the merchant before paying whether it supports a split transaction, with part charged to SecureSpend and the remainder paid another way. Not every merchant accepts split payments, and procedures can vary.
A pending authorization or hold has reduced spendable funds
Some merchants request an authorization that temporarily reserves funds, so the available balance can fall before a transaction is fully settled. Visa notes that some restaurants may request an authorization that includes an additional 20% for a tip; this is a possible authorization, not a universal SecureSpend fee. Check your card agreement and transaction history if an amount remains unavailable.

Can you add money to a SecureSpend card?
No. The SecureSpend agreement reviewed here states, “No additional funds may be added to this Card.” Visa likewise says a Visa Gift card cannot be reloaded. A reloadable prepaid card is a different product, not a way to top up SecureSpend. If you need a card you can fund again, compare that separate product’s fees, reload options, geographic and merchant restrictions, and balance and transaction-history tools before choosing one. What happens to your balance when the card expires?
The printed valid-thru date and the expiration of the underlying funds are not necessarily the same. The SecureSpend agreement reviewed for this guide says funds do not expire when the card’s valid-thru date passes, and that the issuer will not charge for a replacement card it sends because of expiration. It states: “However, even if the ‘Valid Thru’ date has passed, the available funds on your Card do not expire.” If your card date has passed, contact the issuer using the details in your card materials to ask about a replacement or another way to access the funds.
Federal gift-card rules generally require underlying funds to remain valid for at least five years after issuance or the last load, and set disclosure and access requirements when a card expires before its funds. State law and the terms of your particular card may affect the details; consult your agreement and the CFPB’s regulation. CFPB, 12 CFR § 1005.20

Could an inactivity fee reduce the balance?
The SecureSpend-branded agreement effective July 1, 2022 says a $2.95 monthly inactivity fee may begin after 12 consecutive months without activity, subject to applicable law. If that agreement governs your card, the fee may reduce its balance before the valid-thru date. Confirm the terms in your own cardholder agreement before treating this amount or timing as applicable to your card.
