1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLeverage is an exposure multiplier, not a risk-control system. The amount you can lose is determined primarily by your position size, the distance to your planned exit, execution costs and what the contract does when its margin becomes insufficient. A disciplined ETH futures or perpetuals plan sets a maximum loss first, then chooses a position small enough to fit that limit. Even then, liquidation, gaps, slippage, outages and losses beyond the initial margin remain possible.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) warns that virtual-currency price moves are especially significant in margined futures: “This creates ‘leverage,’ and leverage amplifies the underlying risk, making a change in the cash price even more significant.” Its consumer advisory also says that when markets move against a position, a trader may have to add margin or close the position and “may lose more than their initial investments.” Read the contract specification and the rules in your jurisdiction before placing an order.

What leverage changes in an ETH trade
With a leveraged derivative, you control a notional amount of Ethereum exposure by posting collateral rather than paying the full notional value. A 5x setting, for example, can make a $1,000 collateral allocation support approximately $5,000 of notional exposure under a venue’s stated rules. It does not make a 1% ETH move become a guaranteed 5% account return: fees, funding, margin tiers, price basis, contract specifications and liquidation mechanics all affect the result.

If the position is long and ETH falls, the loss is calculated on the notional exposure, not merely on the collateral displayed in the order ticket. If collateral falls below the venue’s maintenance requirement, the venue can reduce or close the position. The CFTC describes this possibility in its virtual-currency trading advisory.

A futures or perpetual contract is also not the same as owning ETH in a wallet. Kraken, for example, describes its ETH futures as exposure available without holding the underlying asset and offers isolated and cross-margin choices on its product page. That is a description of one venue, not a universal rule. Your contract may be cash-margined or coin-margined, use a different index, and settle under different procedures.
Start by identifying the exact contract
Risk calculations are meaningless until you know what you are trading. Record these fields from the current contract specification:
- Instrument: spot, a dated future, or a perpetual swap.
- Settlement: cash or cryptocurrency, and the collateral currency.
- Contract size: the ETH amount or quote-currency value represented by one contract.
- Price reference: index, mark and last-traded prices, and which one controls margin or liquidation.
- Direction and order type: long or short, limit or market, and whether reduce-only orders are available.
- Trading schedule: ordinary session hours, maintenance windows and any continuous-trading provision.
- Costs: maker and taker fees, funding for perpetuals, expiry and roll terms for dated futures, liquidation charges and collateral haircuts.
Do not assume that two contracts with “ETH” in their names have the same tick value, margin requirement or liquidation process. Save a copy or link to the venue’s current specification, because these parameters can change.

Choose the most you are prepared to lose on this trade and the most you are prepared to lose over the day or week. The sources do not establish a universal percentage such as 1% of an account, so any limit must reflect your finances, experience, liquidity needs and ability to withstand a total loss. A loss limit is a planning boundary, not a promise that the venue will close you at that amount.
Separate three limits:
- Trade loss limit: the planned loss if the invalidation level is reached.
- Account drawdown limit: the point at which you stop trading and reassess rather than adding collateral.
- Operational limit: a daily loss, number of attempts or maximum collateral allocation after which you cannot open another position.
Write these limits down before entering. Moving the exit farther away, adding collateral impulsively or increasing size after a loss changes the original risk calculation.

Size the position from the invalidation level
An invalidation level is the price at which your trade thesis is no longer valid. It is not necessarily the same as the liquidation price. Estimate the adverse price movement from entry to that level, then choose notional exposure so the movement, fees and a slippage allowance fit inside the trade-loss limit.
A simple educational calculation is:
planned price loss per ETH = absolute(entry price − invalidation price)
maximum ETH notional = (loss budget − estimated fees and other costs) ÷ planned price loss per ETH
Suppose a hypothetical account permits a $100 loss on a long entered at $3,000, with invalidation at $2,850. The planned move is $150 per ETH. Ignoring costs for the moment, $100 ÷ $150 gives 0.6667 ETH of notional exposure. If the estimated round-trip fees, funding and slippage allowance total $20, only $80 remains for price movement, so the illustrative size falls to about 0.5333 ETH. The arithmetic is a sizing method, not a recommendation; a gap, a fast market, an outage or liquidation can produce a different realized loss.
Leverage changes the collateral needed for that notional amount. It should not be used to justify a larger notional position after the loss budget has been set. If your venue permits a 10x setting, selecting it does not turn the $100 loss budget into a $1,000 budget; it simply leaves less margin between the entry price and a margin breach for a given position size.

Keep liquidation separate from your planned exit
Liquidation is the venue’s protective action when account equity or position margin no longer meets its maintenance requirement. It is determined by the venue’s formula, collateral, open positions, fees and sometimes the mark or index price. A displayed liquidation price is therefore not a stop-loss and is not a guaranteed execution level.
Why the two prices can differ
- A stop order may trigger at your invalidation price but fill worse during a rapid move or thin liquidity.
- Liquidation may be triggered by a mark or index price even when the last traded price has not touched the displayed level.
- Funding, fees, realized profit or loss elsewhere in the account and changing maintenance-margin tiers can move the liquidation threshold.
- A venue may partially close a position, fully close it, or transfer it to a liquidation engine; the exact process is contract-specific.
Leave a deliberate buffer between the invalidation level and the liquidation threshold. Check whether the venue lets you place a reduce-only stop, whether stop-market or stop-limit orders are supported, and what happens if the trigger is reached during a trading interruption. Never add collateral automatically simply to postpone a liquidation without recalculating the total account risk.
Choose isolated or cross margin deliberately
Margin mode controls which collateral can absorb a position’s loss. Kraken’s explanation is a useful example: isolated margin assigns collateral to an individual position, while cross margin shares available collateral across positions. The exact definitions, transfer rules and liquidation procedures must come from the venue you use.
| Margin mode | What is generally exposed | Risk question to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Isolated | Collateral allocated to that position, subject to the venue’s rules | Can additional collateral be added automatically or manually, and can fees or other balances still affect liquidation? |
| Cross | Shared eligible collateral and potentially other positions in the account | Could a losing ETH position consume funds intended for other trades or withdrawals? |
Neither mode is universally safer. Isolated margin can make the allocation easier to cap, but a small allocation can be liquidated quickly. Cross margin can provide more room before one position is liquidated, while exposing more of the account to that position’s loss. Confirm eligible collateral, haircuts, borrowing rules and whether unrealized gains are counted before relying on the displayed margin balance.
Account for every carrying and execution cost
Perpetual funding
Perpetual contracts have no scheduled expiry, so venues commonly use periodic funding transfers between long and short holders to keep the contract near its reference price. The payer, recipient, interval, rate calculation and caps are venue-specific and mutable. Check the current funding schedule and model more than one payment period if you plan to hold the position.

Dated-futures expiry and rolling
A dated future has an expiry or settlement date. Holding through expiry can settle the contract rather than continuing exposure. Rolling into a later month creates another spread, fee and execution event. Compare the expiry time, settlement index and roll cost with the time you expect to hold the trade.
Fees, slippage and liquidation charges
Include maker or taker fees on entry and exit, the bid-ask spread, expected market impact and any liquidation fee in the loss budget. A stop-market order prioritizes execution but may fill away from its trigger; a stop-limit order controls the worst acceptable price but may not fill. Neither order type removes gap risk.
Collateral currency
In a coin-margined contract, the collateral itself can fall in value while ETH falls, increasing stress on the account. In a stablecoin- or fiat-margined contract, the collateral has different price and issuer risks. Verify conversion rules, withdrawal restrictions and any collateral haircut before treating the displayed balance as fully available.
Compare contract types on the same risk dimensions
When deciding between instruments, compare equivalent ETH exposure rather than headline leverage. The following framework identifies what to verify; it does not claim that one category always has the better outcome.
| Comparison | Questions to answer | Risk implication |
|---|---|---|
| Dated future vs perpetual | Is there an expiry, settlement index or roll? What funding applies to a perpetual? | Expiry and roll can create a discrete cost; funding can accumulate during an open-ended position. |
| Linear vs inverse/coin-margined | What currency is collateral and P&L settled in? Is the contract value quoted per ETH or in inverse units? | Collateral and loss can move together, making account-value changes less intuitive. |
| Isolated vs cross | Which balances and positions can be used to meet maintenance margin? | Cross may put more account funds at risk; isolated may reach liquidation sooner. |
| Liquidation reference | Does liquidation use mark, index or last price? Are there partial closes or an insurance fund? | The displayed liquidation price may not match the price seen on the trade tape. |
| Fees and liquidity | What are the current fees, funding terms, spread, depth and liquidation charges? | Execution and carrying costs can consume a large part of a small planned edge. |
| Jurisdiction and custody | Is the contract available to you legally? Who holds collateral, and how do withdrawals and complaints work? | Regulatory, counterparty, cyber and access risks can remain even when the price view is correct. |
| Hours and outages | Does it trade continuously? What are maintenance windows and outage procedures? | A price can move while you are asleep or unable to place an order. |
Plan for markets that move while you are away
Crypto markets can move around the clock. The CFTC has warned about flash crashes, manipulation, cyber risks and the possibility that platform safeguards may not work as a trader expects. A May 29, 2026 CFTC staff advisory discusses 24/7 trading, clearing and settlement for certain registered market participants; it does not establish that every ETH derivative trades continuously or that every venue has the same protections.

Before opening a position, decide:
- When you will check margin and open orders, including overnight and weekend periods.
- What happens if the venue is unavailable: no manual re-entry, a smaller position, or no new trade until service is restored.
- Whether a daily loss limit disables further trading after a stop or liquidation.
- How you will receive security and margin alerts without relying on a single device or channel.
- Whether you can withdraw collateral promptly and what identity, network or settlement delays apply.
Do not treat a venue’s risk engine, insurance fund or circuit-breaker language as a guarantee against loss. Read the actual safeguards and their exclusions.
Check legal status and protections before funding an account
Availability and protections depend on the product and the trader’s location. The CFTC’s May 29, 2026 release on specified crypto-asset perpetuals describes a particular classification and no-action position; it is not a general approval of all perpetuals, platforms or jurisdictions. The related CFTC staff advisory on 24/7 trading likewise concerns specified registered market participants.
Use the venue’s legal-entity name, regulator registrations, client-asset terms and complaint route—not a marketing label—to assess availability. The CFTC’s consumer advisory notes that many virtual-currency cash markets may lack government supervision and can carry manipulation, cyber and safeguard risks. Derivative protections, segregation rules, insolvency treatment and recourse vary by contract and jurisdiction. If you cannot determine which entity holds your collateral or which law governs a dispute, do not assume the product has the protections of a regulated futures account.
A practical pre-trade and post-trade routine
Before the order
- Open the current contract specification and record settlement currency, contract size, price reference, expiry or funding interval, fee schedule and liquidation rules.
- Write the trade thesis and the invalidation price. If you cannot state what would prove the thesis wrong, do not size the trade.
- Set the trade, account and daily loss limits in currency terms.
- Calculate notional size from the price distance, then subtract a realistic allowance for fees, spread, slippage and funding or roll costs.
- Set margin mode intentionally and confirm exactly which balances are exposed.
- Place an exit order that matches the contract’s trigger and execution behavior. Use reduce-only settings where available to prevent an exit from opening a reverse position.
- Confirm available collateral, maintenance margin, liquidation reference price and alert channels immediately before submitting.
While the position is open
- Monitor notional exposure and account equity, not only the percentage shown next to the leverage selector.
- Recheck funding, fees and liquidation distance after material ETH moves or collateral transfers.
- Do not move the invalidation farther away merely because the position is losing. If the thesis changes, close or reduce it and create a new plan.
- Do not add to a losing position unless the combined position is re-sized from a new, explicitly defined loss limit.
- Watch for venue maintenance, index anomalies, delayed data and unusual spreads. A displayed price can be stale while the risk engine continues to operate.
After closing or being liquidated
- Export the fills, fees, funding, realized P&L and liquidation record.
- Compare the actual execution with the planned invalidation and note any gap or slippage.
- Apply the daily loss limit and pause if it was reached; do not automatically re-enter.
- Review whether the contract, margin mode, size or operational assumptions caused more exposure than intended.
Common mistakes and the safer correction
| Mistake | Why it fails | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing the highest leverage available | It encourages a larger notional position and leaves less distance to a margin breach. | Set notional size from the loss budget; use only the collateral requirement that follows. |
| Using liquidation as the stop | Liquidation is controlled by venue rules and can execute after a rapid adverse move. | Set an earlier invalidation exit and retain a buffer. |
| Assuming a stop guarantees the planned loss | Gaps, thin liquidity, outages and trigger-price differences can worsen execution. | Include slippage and gap capacity, and keep size small enough that an overshoot is survivable. |
| Using cross margin without mapping account exposure | Other collateral and positions may be consumed by the ETH trade. | List every balance that can be drawn and consider isolated allocation when it matches your objective. |
| Ignoring funding or expiry | Carrying costs can turn a correctly timed price view into a loss. | Estimate costs for the intended holding period and set a review date. |
| Treating an exchange label as a regulatory guarantee | Legal status and protections are product- and jurisdiction-specific. | Verify the legal entity, contract authorization and client-asset terms. |
| Trading continuously after a loss | Re-entry can compound a drawdown and bypass the original plan. | Use a daily loss limit and require a fresh written setup before trading again. |
How to answer the two questions traders ask most
How do I avoid liquidation when trading ETH with leverage?
You cannot guarantee that liquidation will not occur. The practical controls are to keep notional exposure small, use an invalidation level well before the venue’s liquidation threshold, maintain only the collateral you intend to expose, monitor mark or index pricing, and avoid adding collateral without reassessing total risk. Confirm the venue’s partial-close and liquidation procedures, because the displayed liquidation price can change as fees, funding, collateral and other positions change.
How much should I risk on an ETH futures trade?
There is no source-supported universal percentage. Choose an amount whose complete loss would not impair essential expenses or force a larger risk decision, then subtract expected fees and slippage before sizing. Apply a separate account and daily limit so one trade cannot consume the capital intended for future decisions. This is an educational framework, not individualized financial advice.
