For U.S. federal tax reporting, keep a transaction-level ledger of every crypto acquisition, receipt, sale, exchange, disposition, and relevant transfer, backed by exchange statements, wallet histories, confirmations, and fee records. Record the asset, date and time, units, U.S.-dollar value, cost basis where applicable, and transaction costs. A broker statement may not contain the basis information you need.
What records should you keep?
The IRS says to retain records documenting digital-asset purchases, receipts, sales, exchanges, other dispositions or transfers, and the fair market value of digital assets received as income or business payment. Your records should support the positions on your federal return. The IRS lists these core details for transactions used to calculate gain or loss:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Asset type and the transaction date and time.
- Units acquired or disposed of.
- Fair market value in U.S. dollars at the relevant time.
- Basis for units disposed of.
For an acquisition, preserve the asset type, acquisition date and time, units, and acquisition fair market value. The IRS says, “If you had digital asset transactions, you must report them whether or not they result in a taxable gain or loss.” See the IRS digital assets guidance and IRS digital asset FAQs.

Use one row per event in a spreadsheet, paper ledger, or another system that lets you retain supporting evidence and reconcile activity. The IRS does not endorse a particular product or say a ledger alone is sufficient. These additional fields make it easier to trace an entry back to its source:

- Asset name or ticker; add a network or token identifier when needed to distinguish assets.
- Event type: purchase, receipt, sale, exchange, transfer, fee, or another event.
- Date and time, including the time zone used in the source record.
- Units received, disposed of, or charged as a fee.
- Gross proceeds or fair market value in U.S. dollars, as relevant.
- Basis and the record used to establish it.
- Fee amount, fee currency, and whether it was paid in dollars or crypto.
- Exchange or wallet, transaction identifier, and the filename or location of the supporting record.
- A note describing any correction or reconciliation.
1. Gather source records
Save exchange and broker transaction exports, trade confirmations, account statements, wallet transaction histories, receipts for purchases made with crypto, and records showing fees. Keep evidence for both what happened and the dollar values you used. An export from one exchange may not include another exchange or a self-custody wallet, so collect records from each place you used.
2. Record acquisitions and their costs
For each purchase, note when and how many units you acquired, their U.S.-dollar value, and acquisition costs. The 2025 Form 8949 instructions define digital-asset basis as acquisition cost including transaction fees, commissions, transfer taxes, and other acquisition costs. Retain the purchase confirmation and fee detail supporting the entry; consult the instructions for the tax year of the return you are preparing.

For capital assets, the IRS generally directs sales, exchanges, and other dispositions to Form 8949 and Schedule D, subject to the applicable year’s instructions and exceptions.

Record the fee amount, the currency used to pay it, and the transaction it relates to. Acquisition fees are part of basis under the 2025 Form 8949 instructions. Fees paid in crypto require an additional entry: IRS FAQ 97 says using digital assets to pay for transaction services disposes of the assets used or withheld and can create a gain or loss. The amounts paid may also qualify as digital-asset transaction costs. Preserve enough detail to track both the service fee and the crypto used to pay it.

How to reconcile Form 1099-DA
Broker reporting is being phased in, so compare any Form 1099-DA you receive with your own transaction history rather than treating it as a complete basis record. The IRS says brokers must report gross proceeds for covered transactions on or after January 1, 2025, and basis for certain covered transactions on or after January 1, 2026. In a reminder dated January 28, 2026, the IRS said brokers had to furnish 2025 Form 1099-DA information by February 17, 2026, and that most 2025 statements would not include basis. A missing basis figure does not remove the need to calculate and report applicable income, gain, or loss. Check the instructions for the relevant tax year and the form you received. See the IRS 2026 reminder about digital-asset reporting.

Crypto received as wages, contractor pay, staking or mining income, rewards, or business receipts may require records and forms beyond capital-gains reporting. Keep the date, units, and U.S.-dollar value when received, along with supporting payment or account records. The form depends on the transaction’s character: capital-asset dispositions generally use Form 8949 and Schedule D, while income or business activity may use other forms. If a transaction’s treatment is unclear or complex, preserve the underlying facts and seek qualified tax advice.
