How to Invest in the Space Industry Without Buying SpaceX Shares

Space-industry exposure is possible through listed companies or thematic funds, but holdings, costs, eligibility and sector risks vary. Learn what to verify before you invest.

You can get exposure to the space industry without owning SpaceX by buying shares in other publicly traded companies or shares of a thematic space fund. The key is to check what a company actually does—or what a fund actually holds—rather than relying on a “space” label. A fund can spread exposure across several issuers, but it can still be concentrated in one sector and carry significant company, technology, regulatory and mission risks.

This is general educational information, not a personal investment recommendation. Your country, taxes, time horizon, risk tolerance and eligibility affect which investments are available and appropriate for you.

What investing in the space industry can mean

Space-industry exposure can come from businesses that build or operate launch systems, satellites, orbital infrastructure, communications networks, Earth-observation services, navigation technology and related equipment or software. Some companies also work in aerospace or technology beyond their space-related business. A broad aerospace label—or a product with “space” in its name—does not establish how much of a company’s or fund’s activity is tied to space.

There are two main routes: choosing individual listed companies or buying a thematic fund that holds multiple companies. A third possibility is a broad aerospace or technology fund with some space-related holdings, but that is only a space investment to the extent its current portfolio supports that description. The three routes differ in how much research and issuer-specific risk you take on; none guarantees a return.

Choose an exposure route

Individual shares: direct exposure to a company

Buying an individual company’s listed shares ties your investment to that issuer’s business and financial results. It can give you more control over which activities and companies you own than a fund does, but it also makes the outcome more dependent on the companies you select. Before treating a listed company as a space-industry investment, verify its current listing status, financial disclosures, actual space-related operations and customer exposure. Do not assume that a company earns meaningful space-related revenue just because it is described as aerospace, defense or technology.

A current, comprehensive list of other investable space companies is not established by the sources available for this guide, so it would be misleading to present a stock shortlist as verified. To research a potential issuer, start with its latest annual and quarterly filings, investor materials and exchange listing information. Look for specific descriptions of the space-related business, how it fits into overall operations, major customers and contracts, capital needs, and risks. If disclosures do not make the company’s space exposure clear, treat that exposure as unestablished rather than filling the gap with an industry label.

Thematic space funds: a basket of companies

A space-themed exchange-traded fund (ETF) gives you a single listed fund share backed by a portfolio of securities. Depending on its strategy, the portfolio may include companies involved in satellites, launch technology, communications infrastructure, aerospace, navigation, drones and enabling technologies. A fund can reduce dependence on the results of one issuer compared with owning just that company, but it does not eliminate business risk or turn a narrow sector into a diversified broad-market investment.

The funds themselves are not interchangeable. They may use different definitions of a space company, investment strategies, holdings, weights and methods for bringing in newly listed companies. A fund name is not enough to identify what you own. Review the current prospectus, holdings and strategy before deciding whether the portfolio matches your intended exposure.

Broad aerospace or technology funds: verify before counting them as space exposure

A broad fund may include businesses with space-related operations, but it may hold them in small proportions or not hold them at all. The sources for this guide do not establish the current holdings or space-related share of any named broad aerospace or technology fund. Check a current holdings file and the issuers’ businesses before classifying one as a way to invest in space; otherwise, you may be buying a broad fund whose space exposure is incidental or unknown.

Fund or product What its official material establishes What to verify before investing
iShares Space Technologies UCITS ETF (STAR) The iShares fund page describes index exposure across launch, orbital infrastructure and space applications. It also describes an IPO fast-track mechanism intended to allow newly public space companies to enter earlier. These are issuer descriptions of the fund’s index exposure and mechanism. Current holdings and weights, the operative index rules, current fees, listing and brokerage access in your jurisdiction, and the latest prospectus. The information here does not establish a current fee, a full holdings list or the exact proportion of the portfolio tied to each activity.
Tema Space Innovators ETF (ticker NASA) A summary prospectus filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and amended April 23, 2026, identifies ticker NASA and a NYSE Arca listing. It reports total annual operating expenses of 0.87% after waiver in that amended summary prospectus. The filing says the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has no affiliation with, and did not sponsor or endorse, the fund. Confirm the latest prospectus, whether the stated waiver and expense figure still apply, current holdings and weights, trading access and availability where you live. The cited fee is dated to the amended filing, not a guarantee of the fee you will pay indefinitely.
Direxion Daily SpaceX Bull 2X ETF Its SEC-filed prospectus states an objective of 200% of SpaceX’s daily performance—not 200% over a longer holding period. The filing warns that compounding and volatility can make returns over longer periods differ materially and describes the product as intended for knowledgeable investors who actively monitor positions. This is a leveraged, single-company product, not diversified space-sector exposure. Read the prospectus carefully; do not treat its daily objective as a promise about longer-term returns or as a substitute for a basket of space-related companies.

The NASA ticker is a fund ticker, not evidence of government sponsorship. The SEC-filed prospectus explicitly disclaims affiliation and endorsement by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Check the filing itself for the exact disclosure and any updated terms.

How to evaluate a space ETF

Use the fund’s current prospectus and holdings file together. The prospectus explains the fund’s objectives, strategy, fees and risks; the holdings file shows the securities and weights at a particular time. A holdings snapshot is not a promise that the portfolio will remain unchanged.

  1. Check actual exposure. Identify which holdings are tied to launch, satellites, communications, Earth observation, aerospace, navigation or other enabling activities. Check their portfolio weights and, where available, how much of each issuer’s business is space-related. A long list of holdings does not necessarily mean the fund’s economic exposure is broad if a few large positions dominate.
  2. Understand how the fund selects holdings. Determine whether it follows an index or uses active management. For an index fund, read the methodology: the qualifying-business rules, review schedule, weighting method and treatment of new listings. For an actively managed fund, read how managers define the investable space universe and how much discretion they have. An IPO fast-track feature, such as the one described for STAR’s index, is a selection rule to investigate—not proof that a newly public company is currently held.
  3. Measure concentration and diversification. Count holdings, inspect the largest weights and check for exposure to related sectors or technologies. Ask whether the fund depends heavily on a few issuers, customers, technologies or regions. Even a basket with many constituents can remain concentrated in the space theme and share correlated risks.
  4. Check costs beyond the headline fee. Compare the latest stated expense ratio and any waiver, then read the prospectus for other fund terms and charges. The expense ratio is not the only practical cost: trading liquidity and the difference between the price you pay and the fund’s net asset value can matter too. The prospectus is the controlling reference for fund fees and terms.
  5. Confirm access where you live. Check the fund’s exchange listing, the availability of that listing through your brokerage account and any jurisdictional restrictions. A fund’s presence on an exchange does not mean every investor can buy it through every broker or account type.
  6. Read the risk disclosures. Look for risks specific to the portfolio and its strategy, including technology, regulation, contracts, customers, funding, foreign exchange and supply chains. Consider whether you can tolerate a steep decline or a long period of poor performance without needing to sell.

Do not compare funds solely by ticker, name or fee. Their portfolios and selection rules can differ, and a dated fee or holdings snapshot does not settle what you would own or pay now.

How to buy shares of a fund or listed company

Buying ETF shares generally requires a brokerage account. BlackRock’s iShares guidance describes a brokerage account with a bank or online trading platform as necessary to buy its ETFs; it does not recommend a specific broker. Account eligibility, available securities and costs depend on the broker and your location.

  1. Check account and local eligibility. Confirm that you can open or use an account that permits the specific security and exchange listing. Review applicable account, tax and trading requirements for your country.
  2. Find the official fund or issuer documents. Use the issuer’s current prospectus and holdings file for a fund, or current company filings for an individual share. Match the legal name and ticker to the intended security; similar names or ticker symbols do not establish an affiliation.
  3. Review the security’s terms and portfolio. For an ETF, inspect its strategy, holdings, weights, expenses, risks and listing. For a company, verify its business, financial disclosures, customers, listing and specific space activities.
  4. Check the order details in your brokerage account. Confirm the ticker, exchange, share quantity, order type and estimated transaction costs before placing an order. ETF shares trade on an exchange, and the price at which you trade can differ from the fund’s net asset value.
  5. Keep monitoring information current. Revisit fund filings, holdings and issuer disclosures as they change. A purchase decision based on an old prospectus or holdings file may no longer describe the exposure you have.

Risks that can affect space-related investments

Space businesses can depend on expensive development, complex hardware, a limited set of suppliers and missions that must work as planned. Their challenges can affect revenue, costs, financing needs and share prices. The risks below are relevant possibilities, not a claim that every company or fund has the same exposure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Risk area How it can affect a business or investment
Technology and research costs High research and development costs, rapid technical change and competition can make a product costly to build, obsolete or difficult to commercialize. A company may need additional capital and may not become profitable.
Missions, launches and schedules Launch failures, mission anomalies, delays, capacity constraints and cost increases can disrupt delivery, postpone revenue or damage a company’s financial results. Supplier or launch-provider defaults can also affect operations.
Customers and contracts Some businesses rely on a small number of customers or long-duration, milestone-based contracts. Cancellations, budget changes, procurement shifts or delayed acceptance can reduce or postpone expected revenue.
Regulation and geopolitics Export controls, sanctions, licensing, national-security rules and telecommunications regulation can limit what a business may sell or where it can operate. Geopolitical events can also disrupt business or supply chains.
Infrastructure and intellectual property Specialized supply chains, intellectual-property constraints, spectrum licenses and access to orbital slots can affect a company’s ability to build, launch or operate its services.
Capital and share-price volatility Some businesses may require more funding before they can sustain operations or become profitable. Financial uncertainty, technical setbacks or changes in investor sentiment can make share prices volatile.
Fund concentration A thematic fund may hold multiple issuers but remain more concentrated than a broad-market ETF. Technology change, regulation and shifts in investor sentiment can affect the space theme as a whole.

Leverage adds a separate risk. The daily leveraged product described above targets a multiple of one company’s daily performance; daily compounding and volatility mean that result should not be read as a multiple of the company’s return over a longer holding period. A product with a space-related name is not automatically a diversified industry fund.

Before deciding, match the investment to your circumstances

The available information does not establish your tax treatment, investment horizon, risk tolerance, country or eligibility for any fund or share. Those factors can change the costs and consequences of investing. Fund availability and brokerage access also vary by jurisdiction, and this guide does not identify a broker or rank investments.

If you want to compare a company with a fund, first decide whether you want exposure to one issuer or a basket. Then verify the current company disclosures or fund prospectus and holdings, including what the investment actually owns, how concentrated it is, what it costs and which risks are material. If those facts are unclear or the possible losses do not fit your circumstances, do not rely on the “space” label as a substitute for understanding the investment.
