OpenAI describes a Finances experience that can use connected account data to review spending, bills, subscriptions, savings goals, and debt payoff. DeepSeek can answer general budgeting questions, but the sources available do not establish an equivalent account-connected workflow. There is also no current, direct test showing that either chatbot gives more accurate personal-finance answers.
The practical choice is therefore less about declaring a universal AI winner and more about whether you need an integrated view of your finances, how comfortable you are with each service’s data practices, and how you will verify advice before acting.

What each chatbot can do for a budget
ChatGPT and DeepSeek are general-purpose chat services, but their documented fit for personal finance differs. OpenAI’s Finances feature is designed to answer questions using connected financial data. DeepSeek’s consumer policy and model listings describe its service and models, but the reviewed sources do not establish a comparable consumer feature for linking accounts and analyzing transactions. That is a difference in documented workflow, not proof that DeepSeek cannot discuss budgeting.

For current availability, the OpenAI Help Center is more useful than the earlier rollout announcement: it says Finances is available in the U.S. to Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users on web, iOS, and Android. The announcement initially described a U.S. preview for Pro users on May 15, 2026, then noted on June 25, 2026, that the experience was available to Plus and Pro users. The current help page gives the broader eligibility statement; availability and integrations can change, so check the live page and your account before relying on access. When ChatGPT’s connected-finance workflow is useful
If you want to ask about the transactions, balances, or other data available from connected sources, ChatGPT’s documented Finances experience is the more direct fit. OpenAI says eligible users can link financial accounts through Plaid and credit-report data through Experian. The connections are distinct: connecting one does not imply that the other is connected. The help page also says ChatGPT may cite relevant source data in some answers, giving you a way to inspect what an answer draws on. (OpenAI Help Center, accessed October 9, 2026: Finances in ChatGPT)
Questions can be phrased in ordinary language. OpenAI’s examples include “Am I on pace to stay within my grocery budget?”, “What subscriptions am I paying for?”, “What bills are coming up?”, and “What’s a practical plan to pay down my credit card debt?” Those questions correspond to different kinds of help: comparing spending with a budget, identifying recurring charges, looking ahead to payments, and organizing a payoff plan. (OpenAI Help Center: Finances in ChatGPT)
Turn a broad request into a checkable one
Even with connected data, ask for a defined period, category, and assumption rather than a vague judgment. For example, ask it to compare grocery spending this month with a stated monthly limit, identify the transactions included, and distinguish posted transactions from any estimates. For a debt plan, provide or confirm the balances, interest rates, minimum payments, and amount available for extra payments; request the assumptions behind the order of repayment. Treat any result as a plan to inspect, not as an instruction to execute.
Know what the connection does not authorize
OpenAI says connected account data can include balances, transactions, investments, and liabilities, but ChatGPT cannot see full account numbers or change accounts. It also says the service cannot move money, pay bills, change account settings, make trades, alter retirement contributions, open or close accounts, or file taxes. The feature can assist with reviewing information and planning; it is not a transaction tool. When DeepSeek may still suit the task
DeepSeek remains an option for general questions that do not require the chatbot to retrieve live account information: explaining a budgeting concept, helping organize figures you choose to provide, or drafting a list of questions to take to a qualified professional. Those uses depend on what the user enters and what the service returns; they are not evidence of an integrated account view.
Keep any figures you share limited to what the question needs. Instead of entering account credentials, full account numbers, or a complete statement, you could provide rounded balances, rates, and payment amounts without identifying details. This is a sensible minimization practice, not a guarantee that data is anonymous or that a service’s handling meets a particular user’s requirements.
DeepSeek’s Transparency Center lists DeepSeek-V4 dated April 24, 2026, and DeepSeek-V3.2 dated December 1, 2025. A release listing does not identify which model a particular consumer account uses, nor does it establish performance on budgeting or personal-finance questions. Privacy: what to check before sharing financial information
Privacy is a product-fit decision, not a footnote. The provider policies describe different data practices, and those descriptions are statements by the companies rather than independent audits of implementation. Read the policy and in-product controls that apply to your account, region, and service before submitting sensitive information.

ChatGPT controls and limits
OpenAI says the Finances experience follows the user’s existing ChatGPT model-training settings. It says users can disconnect sources, manage financial memories, and use temporary chats. Temporary chats do not access connected financial accounts or create or use personalization memories, so they are not a substitute for the connected-data workflow. The OpenAI announcement says disconnected synced account data is deleted from OpenAI systems within 30 days; it also distinguishes financial information in conversation history, which is handled separately. Check current controls in the product before connecting accounts or assuming that disconnecting a source removes information from chat history. (OpenAI Help Center: Finances in ChatGPT; OpenAI, May 15, 2026: A new personal finance experience in ChatGPT)
DeepSeek policy considerations
DeepSeek’s consumer privacy policy identifies Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd. as the controller and says personal data collected to provide the service is directly collected, processed, and stored in the People’s Republic of China. The policy says retention varies according to factors such as purpose, data type, sensitivity, and legal requirements, and that service data may be retained while an account is active. It also describes a right to opt out of use of personal data for model training or technology optimization. These are the provider’s policy statements, not independent verification of its systems. (DeepSeek Privacy Policy, accessed October 9, 2026: DeepSeek Privacy Policy)
The policy advises special care when sending personal data and says not to rely on the factual accuracy of model output. Check the policy for the exact product and jurisdiction you use: using a model through a separate provider can involve different data handling. No current head-to-head evidence here establishes that DeepSeek or ChatGPT is more accurate for budgeting and personal finance. A feature that can refer to connected data may help ground some answers in account information, but it does not prove that the analysis, assumptions, or recommendation is correct. Likewise, a model release date or general reputation is not a personal-finance accuracy test.

The available studies provide caution rather than a winner. A December 2024 preprint, Can AI Help with Your Personal Finances?, evaluated several large language models on U.S. topics including mortgages, taxes, loans, and investments. Its authors reported approximately 70% average accuracy across the models studied and noted that performance varied, with difficulty on complex questions. DeepSeek was not included, and the work predates current releases, so that figure is not a score for either chatbot today. (2024 preprint: Can AI Help with Your Personal Finances?)
A July 2023 preprint by Lakkaraju and colleagues tested chatbots on 13 personal-finance questions involving banking products, high-value purchases, payment decisions, and investment advice. The authors reported critical gaps in accurate and reliable information. It is early general caution, not a test of current ChatGPT or DeepSeek. (2023 preprint: Can LLMs be Good Financial Advisors?: An Initial Study in Personal Decision Making for Optimized Outcomes)
OpenAI has also reported results from an internal personal-finance benchmark: GPT-5.5 Thinking scored 79 out of 100 and GPT-5.5 Pro scored 82.5 out of 100. OpenAI says the benchmark used weighted expert-graded response quality and accuracy and involved more than 50 finance professionals evaluating challenging tasks. These are vendor-reported internal benchmark scores, not a comparison with DeepSeek, an independent evaluation, or a real-world success rate. A practical way to choose
- Decide whether the question needs live account data. If you want analysis of linked transactions, balances, subscriptions, or bills, ChatGPT has the documented integrated workflow among these two options. If you are asking a general concept question or using figures you enter yourself, either service may be considered, subject to its privacy terms.
- Check that the feature is available to you. ChatGPT Finances is documented for U.S. Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users on web, iOS, and Android as of the help page accessed October 9, 2026. Confirm your account’s eligibility and available connections in the live product documentation. (OpenAI Help Center: Finances in ChatGPT)
- Set a privacy boundary before entering data. Decide whether you are comfortable with the provider’s data location, retention language, and controls. Share only the information needed; do not provide passwords or full account credentials in a chat.
- Ask for a traceable answer. Specify the period, figures, and constraints, and ask the chatbot to identify its assumptions and source data. Check that a connected account or user-entered figure is actually the basis of the response.
- Verify before acting. Recalculate totals and confirm due dates, interest rates, tax details, or investment claims using authoritative records. Use a qualified professional for advice that requires licensing or individualized judgment.
What neither chatbot should replace
ChatGPT explicitly says it is not a fiduciary, registered investment adviser, broker-dealer, tax preparer, or law firm, and that its answers are for informational and planning purposes. DeepSeek’s policy separately cautions users not to rely on its models’ factual accuracy. A chatbot can help organize a budget or clarify options, but these statements matter whenever a decision has legal, tax, investment, or other material consequences. (OpenAI Help Center: Finances in ChatGPT; DeepSeek Privacy Policy: DeepSeek Privacy Policy)
Neither service should be treated as an authority to carry out financial actions. ChatGPT’s documented limits include not moving money, paying bills, changing account settings, making trades, changing retirement contributions, opening or closing accounts, or filing taxes. Verify actions directly with your financial institution or the relevant qualified professional.
Verdict
For a U.S. budgeter who prioritizes questions grounded in connected financial accounts, ChatGPT is the better-documented fit because OpenAI describes a specific Finances workflow and its current eligibility. For general financial explanations or planning from figures you supply yourself, DeepSeek can still be considered, but its reviewed documentation does not establish the same connected budgeting experience. Neither is a proven accuracy winner: treat outputs as fallible, weigh each provider’s privacy terms, and verify important decisions independently.
