For long-term index exposure, compare an index mutual fund with an ETF that tracks the same index. Both are fund investments; the main practical difference is how you buy and sell them. Futures are different: they are derivative contracts with expiry, margin and settlement terms, not units you hold as a long-term fund investment. Choose the route that matches your purpose, ability to manage its costs and risks, and preferred way to transact.
First, decide what kind of exposure you want
The Nifty 50 and Nifty Bank, commonly called Bank Nifty, are market indices. You cannot buy an index itself. To get exposure linked to one, you need a financial product that tracks it or a derivative contract based on it. An index fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) holds a portfolio intended to follow an index. An index future instead gives you a contractual position tied to the index, with exchange-defined terms and a finite expiry.

The index you choose matters as much as the product. Nifty 50 exposure is linked to the index’s constituent companies; Bank Nifty exposure is tied to the banking sector. A sector-focused index is not interchangeable with broad index exposure. Before investing, be clear about whether you want a fund investment that you can hold, or a derivative position that you must manage under contract rules.

- For passive investing: compare index mutual funds and ETFs tracking your chosen index.
- For exchange-traded derivative exposure: consider futures only if you understand contract value, margin, expiry, settlement and the possibility of losses.
SEBI advises investors to understand the features and risk characteristics of securities, including derivatives, before investing. A future should not be treated as a simple substitute for owning fund units.

How the three routes differ
| Route | What you buy | How transactions work | What to compare or check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Index mutual fund | Units in a mutual fund that aims to replicate an index by holding its constituents in similar proportions. | Transactions are based on the fund’s applicable NAV, which is declared after markets close. | Benchmark, scheme expenses, tracking error or tracking difference, plan terms and the scheme’s transaction rules. |
| ETF | Units in an index-tracking fund. | Units trade on an exchange like shares, so the traded price can move during the session. | Benchmark, expenses, tracking, liquidity, bid-ask spread and applicable brokerage and demat charges. |
| Index futures | An exchange-traded derivative contract whose underlying is an index. | You trade a contract for a specified expiry; current exchange terms govern its lot size, margin and settlement. | Notional exposure, contract month, lot size, margin, expiry, settlement, liquidity and any cost of rolling a position. |
The table describes the structure, not a performance ranking. Returns from an index fund or ETF can differ from the index because of expenses and tracking. Futures have a different risk profile: contract exposure, margin and expiry affect the position even if the underlying index moves in the direction you expected.
Index mutual funds: a NAV-based way to invest
How they work
SEBI describes an index mutual fund as a passive mutual fund that aims to replicate an index, such as the Nifty 50, by holding index constituents in similar proportions. The fund does not promise to match the index exactly. Expenses, portfolio operations and other sources of tracking variation can make the fund’s return differ from the benchmark.
When you buy or redeem mutual fund units, the transaction is based on the applicable NAV rather than a live exchange quote. AMFI explains that mutual fund NAVs are declared after markets close. That timing is a key distinction from an ETF, whose market price changes as units trade during the session. Check the fund’s transaction cut-off and applicable rules with the scheme before placing an order; a displayed NAV is not a live intraday price.

How to select and purchase a fund
- Choose the index first. Decide whether you want Nifty 50 exposure or the banking-sector exposure associated with Bank Nifty. Confirm the scheme’s stated benchmark rather than relying on a product name alone.
- Find schemes that track that benchmark. Use current scheme documents and the asset manager’s disclosures to confirm the index, fund category and whether the scheme is open for investment.
- Compare like with like. Review scheme expenses and published tracking error or tracking difference over matching periods. Check the benchmark and whether the plan terms you are considering are direct or regular; do not compare figures from different periods or different benchmarks as if they were equivalent.
- Check the transaction process. Confirm how the fund accepts purchases and redemptions, the applicable NAV rules, cut-off time and any scheme-specific conditions through the asset manager or your investment platform.
- Place the order and keep the records. Use the chosen fund’s available purchase channel, review the order details before confirming and retain the transaction confirmation and scheme documents.
Current scheme expenses and tracking figures vary, and should be checked in current disclosures rather than inferred from an index name. A lower expense figure by itself does not establish that one scheme has tracked its benchmark more closely over every period.
ETFs: exchange-traded index fund units
What changes when you buy an ETF
An ETF is a fund, but its units trade on an exchange like shares. SEBI notes that an ETF’s market price changes with exchange trading. AMFI’s description of NAV timing helps explain why its transaction price and a mutual fund purchase are not the same: the ETF order is executed at an exchange price during the session, while a mutual fund transaction uses the applicable NAV process.
Exchange access brings additional considerations. A buyer may pay brokerage and demat-related charges, in addition to fund expenses. Liquidity and the bid-ask spread also matter: the quoted buying and selling prices can differ, and a thinly traded ETF may not offer the same ease of execution as a more actively traded one. Check the live quote and order book before placing an order rather than assuming the last traded price is the price your order will receive.

How to evaluate and buy an ETF
- Confirm the benchmark. Verify that the ETF tracks the Nifty 50 or Nifty Bank index you intend to hold. Check the fund documents and current exchange or asset-manager listing.
- Compare fund-level tracking and expenses. Review the ETF’s published expenses and tracking error or tracking difference over consistent periods. These measures help assess how closely a fund has followed its benchmark, but they do not guarantee future results.
- Check trading conditions. Look at the current bid and ask, the spread, trading activity and the order type available on your brokerage platform. Include brokerage and demat charges in your cost comparison.
- Enter an order through your brokerage account. Confirm the ETF symbol, quantity and order details before submission. Review the execution price and the resulting holding after the order fills.
- Keep both fund and trade records. Save the order confirmation and consult the asset manager’s disclosures for ongoing scheme information.
NSE Clearing has listed examples of ETFs in a circular, including Nippon India ETF Nifty BeES, SBI-ETF NIFTY 50 and SBI-ETF NIFTY BANK. These names are examples, not a recommendation or an assurance of current availability, benchmark or costs. Confirm the current scheme name, benchmark, availability and disclosures with the asset manager and exchange. Quantities cited in that circular relate to its particular cross-margin context; they are not retail minimum purchase quantities.

How to compare funds tracking the same index
For a fair comparison, start with the benchmark and use the same time periods for each fund. SEBI Investor defines tracking error as the difference between returns of a portfolio, such as a mutual fund or ETF, and its benchmark index. It is a useful measure of how faithfully a fund follows its chosen index. Tracking difference—the gap between the fund’s return and the index return over a period—is another useful comparison, where the fund publishes it.
| Check | Why it matters | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Benchmark | A fund’s performance should be judged against the index it actually tracks. | Confirm the stated index in the scheme documents; do not compare a Nifty 50 fund with a Bank Nifty benchmark as if they were the same product. |
| Expenses | Fund expenses reduce the return available to investors. | Compare current disclosures for the schemes and plan types you are actually considering. |
| Tracking error and tracking difference | They describe how closely a fund’s return has followed its benchmark. | Compare the same measure, over the same published period, for funds with the same benchmark. |
| Transaction method | Mutual fund units transact through an NAV-based process; ETF units trade at exchange prices. | Choose the process you can use comfortably and account for the timing and execution differences. |
| ETF trading costs and liquidity | Brokerage, demat charges and the bid-ask spread can add to ETF costs. | Assess the live trading conditions and your own transaction charges, not only the fund’s expense figure. |
No single comparison figure tells the whole story. Tracking measures need context: use consistent periods and the same benchmark, and read the fund’s disclosures to understand what is being measured. Do not rank providers based on a single expense or tracking figure without checking that the products and measurement periods are comparable.

Index futures: understand the contract before considering a trade
What a futures position means
A futures contract is a derivative based on an underlying index. You are entering a contract, not buying units in a fund that you can simply leave in a portfolio indefinitely. The exchange defines contract specifications, including expiry and lot size, and the position is subject to margin and settlement rules. The notional exposure can be materially different from the cash margin deposited, so margin should not be mistaken for the full value of the exposure or a cap on possible loss.
SEBI’s investor guidance is to understand the features and risks of derivatives before investing. A position can lose money as the index moves, and managing it also requires attention to margin, expiry and settlement. A long-term investor seeking passive index exposure should compare funds first rather than assuming futures are a cheaper or equivalent long-term holding.

These are exchange contract terms, not permanent product constants. Lot sizes and other specifications can change. Check the current NSE contract information and applicable contract file before placing any order. Current margin requirements, tax treatment and broker-specific charges are not stated here; confirm the applicable details with the exchange, your broker and a qualified tax professional as appropriate.
Pre-trade checklist
- Confirm that you are looking at the correct underlying: NIFTY for Nifty 50 or BANKNIFTY for Bank Nifty.
- Select the exact contract month and confirm its current expiry date.
- Verify the current lot size and calculate the contract’s notional exposure from the live index level and contract terms.
- Check the margin required by your broker and understand what happens if your available funds fall below its requirements.
- Understand the contract’s settlement process and what you must do before expiry if you do not intend to hold through the relevant settlement event.
- Assess liquidity and transaction costs, including the costs and risks of closing or rolling a position.
- Decide in advance how you will manage adverse price moves and the possibility of losing more than the margin initially posted.
Do not use an old lot-size example, a prior expiry calendar or a margin figure from another date as if it were current. Exchange specifications are time-sensitive, and the current terms should be verified before the trade.
Choosing between an index fund, ETF and futures
| Your priority | Route to examine first | Main decision |
|---|---|---|
| Passive exposure through a mutual fund transaction | Index mutual fund | Compare the benchmark, current expenses, tracking measures and NAV-based transaction process. |
| Exchange trading of index fund units | ETF | Compare fund tracking and expenses, then account for liquidity, spread, brokerage and demat charges. |
| Derivative exposure with a defined contract and expiry | Index futures | Understand the current contract specifications, notional exposure, margin, expiry, settlement and risk before trading. |
For many readers looking for long-term passive exposure, the relevant choice is between a mutual fund and an ETF tracking the desired index. The better fit depends on how you prefer to transact and the total costs and tracking record of the specific schemes available to you. Futures serve a different purpose and call for active management of a derivative position; they are not a third version of a fund.

- Assuming an index and a fund are the same thing. A fund aims to follow its benchmark; its return can diverge because of expenses and tracking.
- Comparing unlike benchmarks. Confirm whether the product tracks Nifty 50 or Nifty Bank before comparing performance or costs.
- Treating an ETF’s last price as a guaranteed execution price. Its price changes during exchange trading; check the live market and spread when placing an order.
- Ignoring costs outside the fund expense. ETFs can involve brokerage and demat charges, while funds also have their own scheme expenses.
- Using circular-specific quantities as retail buying rules. The minimum quantities in NSE Clearing’s cross-margin context are not retail purchase minimums.
- Trading futures from stale contract data. Check the current lot size, expiry, margin and settlement terms instead of relying on an old example.
- Thinking margin is the maximum amount at risk. Margin is tied to a derivative position; it does not eliminate the risk of losses as the market moves.
- Choosing from a name or a single metric. Verify the actual benchmark, scheme documents and comparable tracking and expense disclosures.
