Compare written offers for the same amount financed, down payment, term, and vehicle transaction. Then evaluate the APR, finance charge, required and optional fees, total of payments, and total purchase cost. A longer term can make a payment look affordable while adding substantially to the interest you pay.
This guide applies to U.S. auto loans and the federal Truth in Lending Act (TILA) disclosures used for consumer credit. Lender pricing, approval criteria, promotions, and fees vary by borrower and transaction, so the final disclosure—not a verbal quote—controls.

What to compare first
Ask every prospective lender for a written offer based on the same transaction assumptions. At minimum, keep these inputs constant:

- Vehicle price and taxes included in the transaction
- Down payment and trade-in value
- Amount financed
- Loan term and payment frequency
- Optional products included or excluded
Record the interest rate and APR as separate figures. Also record the monthly payment, number of payments, finance charge, total of payments, and total purchase cost. Comparing only the payment can hide a longer term or a larger amount borrowed.

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) guidance says to compare the annual percentage rate, interest rate, loan length, and total amount financed. It also recommends obtaining financing offers before visiting a dealer and considering banks, credit unions, and dealer-arranged financing.
Interest rate versus APR
Interest rate
The interest rate is the stated rate applied to the principal balance under the loan’s repayment method. It describes the borrowing cost before certain lender charges are incorporated into an annualized comparison figure.
Annual percentage rate (APR)
APR combines the interest rate with certain lender fees and expresses the resulting cost as a yearly rate. As the CFPB explains, “The APR is the interest rate plus any additional fees charged by the lender.” APR is useful for comparing offers with similar terms and amounts financed, but it does not replace reviewing the dollar disclosures.
Compare APR with APR and interest rate with interest rate. A lender’s 6.00% interest rate cannot be fairly compared with another lender’s 6.20% APR without examining the fees, term, and amount financed behind each figure. TILA disclosures should show the APR before you finalize the loan.
Why both numbers belong on your worksheet
- The interest rate helps you understand the rate applied to the balance.
- The APR helps reveal the effect of certain lender fees.
- The finance charge and total of payments show the dollar cost over the actual term.
- Differences in term, amount financed, and optional products can make an APR comparison misleading unless the offers are otherwise equivalent.
Make offers comparable before judging them
Hold the amount financed constant
If one offer finances $25,000 and another finances $28,000 because it includes add-ons or a different down payment, the payment and total repayment are not measuring the same loan. Ask each lender to quote the same amount financed, or clearly separate the portions that differ.

Use the same term
A 36-month offer and a 72-month offer answer different budget questions. For a clean rate comparison, request the same term first. You can then compare the cost of choosing a shorter or longer term as a separate decision.
State the same down payment and trade-in
Down payments and trade-in equity reduce the amount borrowed. A larger down payment can produce a lower payment even when the lender’s pricing is unchanged. Write down whether a quoted trade-in value is gross value, net equity after an existing payoff, or an estimate subject to inspection.

Separate optional products
Extended warranties, optional credit insurance, and GAP coverage can be financed with the vehicle loan. When included, they increase the amount financed and usually increase the interest paid. Request one quote with no optional products and another showing each product separately. GAP coverage is optional; if you want it, compare its price from more than one source rather than accepting an unexplained amount in the contract.
Where to obtain competing offers
Gather offers from more than one type of financing source:
- Bank: Ask for its written APR, rate, term options, fees, amount financed, and payment.
- Credit union: Membership or eligibility rules may apply. Request the same disclosures and assumptions as you request from a bank.
- Dealer-arranged financing: The dealer may submit your application to one or more lenders. Ask which lender is making the loan, what rate and fees apply, and whether a promotional rate has eligibility conditions.
CFPB guidance recommends obtaining an offer before going to the dealer. A prearranged offer gives you a benchmark for the dealer’s financing. Manufacturer or dealer promotions can be limited to particular terms, vehicles, credit profiles, or dates; obtain the written conditions and compare the full cost with your other offers.

Comparison sites may share the information you submit with prospective lenders. Before submitting an application, read the site’s privacy and data-use disclosures and determine whether you are requesting an estimate or applying for credit.
Managing credit inquiries
CFPB says that auto-loan quotes obtained within a 14-to-45-day period can minimize the effect of multiple inquiries, depending on the scoring model and circumstances. This is not a universal guarantee. Plan your applications, ask whether a lender is performing a hard inquiry, and avoid treating the range as a promise that every scoring model will combine inquiries identically.
Build a written-offer comparison sheet
Use the following fields for every offer. Fill them from the lender’s disclosure, not from a salesperson’s rounded payment.
| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Lender and source | Bank, credit union, dealer-arranged lender, or other source | Identifies who is responsible for the terms |
| Vehicle and transaction price | Price, taxes, title, registration, and other charges included | Confirms that offers cover the same purchase |
| Down payment and trade-in | Cash down, trade-in allowance, and any existing payoff | Changes the amount financed |
| Amount financed | Dollar amount borrowed after the transaction inputs | Required for a fair payment and cost comparison |
| Interest rate | Stated borrowing rate and whether it is fixed | Shows the rate applied to the balance |
| APR | Annual percentage rate from the disclosure | Includes the interest rate and certain lender fees |
| Term and payment count | Months and total number of scheduled payments | Longer terms usually reduce payment but can increase interest |
| Monthly payment | Scheduled amount and payment frequency | Tests affordability, but is not the full cost |
| Finance charge | Total dollar finance charge disclosed | Shows the financing cost over the term |
| Total of payments | All scheduled payments combined | Direct measure of repayment under the loan |
| Total sale price or total purchase cost | Down payment or trade-in plus financed payments, as applicable | Shows the overall cost of acquiring the vehicle |
| Fees and add-ons | Required charges and each optional product listed separately | Reveals what increased the amount borrowed |
| Late and prepayment terms | Late fee, grace period, and any prepayment penalty | Identifies costs triggered by payment problems or early payoff |
If a figure is not on the written offer, ask the lender to provide it. Do not fill a missing field with an estimate.

The CFPB illustrates the term trade-off with a $20,000 loan at a 4.75% interest rate. These are educational examples, not current market quotes:

| Term | Illustrated monthly payment | Illustrated total interest |
|---|---|---|
| 36 months | $597 | $1,498 |
| 48 months | $458 | $1,999 |
| 60 months | $375 | $2,508 |
| 72 months | $320 | $3,024 |
Extending the illustrated loan from 36 to 72 months lowers the payment by $277 per month but adds $1,526 in interest. A payment that fits the monthly budget can therefore be the more expensive choice overall. Check whether the vehicle will retain enough value to support the balance during a long term, especially if you make a small down payment; the written loan figures, not a predicted resale value, should drive the comparison.
Worksheet illustration
A separate CFPB worksheet illustration uses a 3.5% interest rate and a 48-month term. It shows a $353.22 payment, $16,955 in total payments, $6,000 in down payment or trade-in, a $22,955 total purchase cost, and $1,155 total interest. The figures are examples for using the worksheet, not a rate or price recommendation.
Useful calculations
- Total scheduled payments: monthly payment multiplied by the number of payments. Use the disclosed total of payments when it differs because of payment timing or rounding.
- Approximate interest and financing cost: compare the disclosed finance charge rather than subtracting a guessed principal from a rounded payment total.
- Total purchase cost: include the down payment and applicable trade-in amount with the financed payments, while keeping taxes, title charges, and products clearly identified.
The free CFPB comparison worksheet can organize multiple offers. A loan calculator or a lender-provided payment is optional; the signed disclosure controls if a calculator result differs.

Required charges
Review every listed lender fee and ask what it covers. A fee may be part of the APR calculation or may appear elsewhere in the disclosure. Do not assume every fee is negotiable or avoidable; instead, identify its amount, whether it is required for approval, and how it affects the amount financed and finance charge.

Ask the lender or dealer to mark each item as required or optional. Extended service contracts, optional credit insurance, and GAP coverage are examples of products that can be rolled into the loan. Request revised figures without each optional product, then decide whether the protection is worth its separate price. If you choose an add-on, compare its cash price and cancellation terms and understand whether a refund reduces the loan balance or is paid elsewhere.

Dealer discounts tied to financing
A promotional rate may replace a cash rebate or require a particular term, vehicle, or credit profile. Compare the complete transaction: vehicle price, rebate, amount financed, APR, fees, payment count, finance charge, and total payments. A low promotional APR is not automatically cheaper if it comes with a higher vehicle price or if another offer provides a larger discount.
Read the TILA disclosure before signing
Before accepting the loan, compare the final TILA disclosure with the offer you negotiated. Confirm:
- Annual percentage rate
- Finance charge in dollars
- Amount financed
- Total of payments
- Total sale price when stated for the transaction
- Number and amount of scheduled payments
- Payment due dates or payment schedule
- Late fees and any grace-period language
- Prepayment terms or penalty, if any
Ask the lender or dealer to explain every difference between the quote and the final disclosure before signing. Do not rely on a promise that a figure will be corrected later. Keep a copy of the signed contract and all written offer sheets.
Decide which offer is actually affordable
Start with total cost
The CFPB describes total cost as the best way to compare auto loans. Rank otherwise equivalent offers by total of payments and finance charge, then account for the down payment, trade-in, vehicle price, and required fees to determine total purchase cost.
Test the payment against your budget
After identifying the lower-cost offers, check whether the payment remains manageable alongside insurance, fuel, maintenance, registration, taxes, and other debts. Do not choose a longer term solely to reach a target payment. If the only affordable payment requires a substantially longer term, reconsider the vehicle price, increase the down payment only if it does not exhaust your emergency savings, or seek a different vehicle.
Check flexibility and risk
Review late-payment consequences and prepayment language. If you expect to pay extra, ask how additional payments are applied and whether any prepayment charge applies. Confirm whether the rate is fixed for the life of the loan and whether payment amounts can change.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
| Mistake | Why it misleads | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing the lowest monthly payment | A longer term can increase total interest | Compare term, payment count, finance charge, and total of payments |
| Comparing APR with an interest rate | The measures include different costs | Compare APR with APR and rate with rate |
| Accepting different loan amounts | Add-ons, taxes, or down payments change the principal | Request the same amount financed and list differences separately |
| Ignoring optional products | Products rolled into the loan increase borrowing and interest | Request a no-add-on quote and itemized alternatives |
| Relying on a verbal quote | Final fees, term, or payment may differ | Use the written offer and final TILA disclosure |
| Assuming a promotion applies | Eligibility and transaction conditions may limit it | Obtain written conditions and compare the complete cost |
| Using a calculator result as the contract | Rounding and omitted fees can change the result | Use the lender’s disclosed figures as controlling |
A practical decision sequence
- Set the transaction assumptions. Write down the vehicle price, down payment, trade-in equity, amount financed, and desired term.
- Collect written offers. Request preapproval or a written quote from a bank, credit union, and dealer-arranged source where available.
- Record both rate measures. Enter the interest rate and APR exactly as disclosed.
- Strip out optional products. Request revised offers without warranties, credit insurance, GAP, or other optional items, then price any product you may want separately.
- Compare dollars. Review payment, payment count, finance charge, total of payments, and total purchase cost.
- Check conditions. Verify promotional eligibility, fixed-rate status, late fees, and prepayment terms.
- Reconcile the contract. Before signing, match the final TILA disclosure to the offer and obtain explanations for every change.
- Choose the lowest-cost offer that fits your budget. Do not trade a manageable payment for a term that creates excessive total interest or leaves the loan unaffordable when ownership costs are included.
What current guidance does—and does not—tell you
CFPB consumer guidance cited here was last reviewed on January 30, 2024, August 28, 2026, and September 24, 2024, depending on the page. It does not establish a representative current market rate. Your approved rate depends on factors such as credit profile, lender policy, vehicle, term, amount financed, and transaction details. Use the disclosure for your specific offer rather than a national “average” as the decision point.
The guidance and disclosures discussed are U.S.-specific. State rules, lender practices, and contract language can add requirements. If a term, fee, or add-on is unclear, ask the lender to explain it in writing before you sign.
