Who can receive each one depends on the rules of that scheme, the member’s family circumstances and, for some claims, a valid nomination.
The key distinction is that an EPF nominee does not automatically take priority over eligible family members for EPS pension. EPS nominee pension is a conditional route generally relevant when the member leaves no eligible family. This guide explains the separate claims and where to start; EPFO must determine entitlement from the member’s records and the rules applicable to the case.

First identify what the family is claiming
“EPFO death claim” can refer to different payments administered under different schemes. The person entitled to the provident-fund balance is not necessarily the person entitled to monthly pension, and neither claim is the same as EDLI insurance. A family can have more than one applicable claim, so identify each benefit before choosing a claimant or filing route.
A useful first question is not “Who is the nominee?” but “Which payment is being claimed?” EPF is the member’s accumulated provident-fund balance; EPS provides a monthly survivor pension to beneficiaries who meet its rules; and EDLI is a separate insurance benefit that may apply in qualifying circumstances, including death in service. A claimant may be eligible to pursue one benefit without thereby becoming the recipient of all three. Check the conditions and records for each benefit independently.

| Benefit | What it pays | Who may claim | EPFO route identified in official material |
|---|---|---|---|
| EPF account settlement | The deceased member’s accumulated provident-fund balance | A nominee, beneficiary or other claimant established under the applicable EPF rules | Form 20; death-case composite form; online nominee death claim |
| EPS family pension | Monthly survivor pension | Eligible spouse and eligible children, subject to scheme conditions | Form 10D; current portal family/nominee pension route |
| EPS nominee pension | Monthly pension under the scheme’s nominee provision | A duly nominated person where the member leaves no eligible family, subject to EPS conditions | Form 10D; online nominee pension route |
| Dependent-parent pension | Monthly pension under the EPS fallback described in EPFO’s handbook | Dependent father or mother where the scheme conditions are met, including the absence of an eligible family or nominee | Form 10D |
| EDLI insurance | A separate insurance benefit, not a pension | A nominee or beneficiary under applicable EDLI conditions; qualifying circumstances include death in service | Form 5IF; death-case composite form |
The comparison reflects EPFO’s scheme overview, handbook, forms and portal routes. It does not decide whether a particular claimant qualifies. Service history, the circumstances and timing of death, family status and nomination records can affect the result. Older EPFO material should not be used by itself to infer a current EDLI payout amount.
Keep the three payment types distinct when speaking with family members or completing a form. “The nominee gets the money” may be too broad: it could refer to the EPF balance, a conditional EPS nominee pension, or an EDLI claim, each with a different basis. If someone has been nominated for one purpose, do not assume that the same nomination answers every question about the other schemes.
How family status and nomination affect the claims
EPF balance: nomination applies within the EPF rules
The EPF nomination concerns payment of the provident-fund balance. EPFO’s overview describes EPF-family nomination rules, and the EPF Scheme text says that if a member has a family, the nomination must be in favor of family. A nomination made when the member had no family becomes invalid if the member later acquires a family. That means a saved nomination should not be assumed to settle the claim without checking the member’s circumstances and the applicable EPF rules.
In practical terms, the nomination record must be read alongside the member’s family status under the relevant rules. A record that was valid when entered may not remain the operative answer after a change in family circumstances. Nor should relatives assume that a name visible in an account automatically overrides the rule that applies when the member has a family. EPFO’s determination depends on the facts and records for the claim.
EPS pension: eligible family has priority over a nominee
EPS has its own beneficiary logic; it is not simply an extension of the EPF account nomination. EPFO asks members to declare their spouse and all children. A person may be nominated for EPS when the member has no family, but EPFO’s material says that nomination becomes invalid on acquiring a family. The EPS handbook describes nominee pension in the no-eligible-family case and identifies dependent parents as a fallback where there is neither eligible family nor nominee, subject to the scheme’s conditions.
Accordingly, an EPF nominee may have a claim to the fund balance under EPF rules without being the person entitled to EPS family pension. Likewise, a spouse or child’s pension eligibility does not by itself establish who receives the EPF settlement or EDLI benefit. Treat each scheme as its own claim.
This distinction is the answer to a common question: “Can an EPF nominee claim family pension?” Nominee status in the EPF account is not, by itself, proof of EPS entitlement. For pension, check whether the member left an eligible family under EPS. Where eligible family members exist, the scheme’s family-pension rules are the relevant starting point; the EPS nominee route is described for the no-eligible-family situation. The member’s e-nomination and family details should be checked, but one should not treat an EPF nomination as a universal instruction covering every benefit.

EDLI: a separate insurance question
EDLI is not the member’s EPF savings and is not a monthly pension. It is a separate insurance claim with its own qualifying conditions. EPFO identifies Form 5IF and describes qualifying death-in-service circumstances in its instructions. Check those conditions and the applicable beneficiary record rather than assuming that an EPS pension award or EPF nomination automatically decides EDLI entitlement.
Do not use an older summary of EDLI to promise a particular payout. EPFO’s overview contains historical amount wording, while the downloadable forms and handbook also have amendment histories. The applicable scheme provision, circumstances of death and current rules need to be checked for an individual claim. The official material identified here does not support quoting a current amount as a general guarantee.
Which form or online route applies?
EPFO identifies three forms for the principal death-related benefits: Form 20 for deceased-member PF settlement, Form 10D for monthly pension, and Form 5IF for EDLI. The death-case composite form groups options for those three claims. The live EPFO portal also lists separate online routes for death claims by nominees and pension claims by family or nominees.
| If the family seeks… | Start with… | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Payment of the EPF balance | Form 20 or the relevant online nominee death-claim route | Form 20 instructions ask for a death certificate and describe additional documents depending on the claimant and circumstances. |
| Monthly EPS pension | Form 10D or the current family/nominee pension route | Form 10D instructions identify claimant types including widow/widower, major/orphan, guardian, nominee and dependent parent; the correct category depends on eligibility. |
| EDLI insurance | Form 5IF or the composite death-claim option | Check the qualifying circumstances and applicable beneficiary conditions. |
| More than one applicable benefit | The relevant option for each benefit, or the composite death-claim form | A form for one benefit should not be treated as an automatic claim for every other benefit. |
Form labels and online workflows can change. EPFO’s online nominee pension page displayed a version dated 6 October 2026. Confirm the current route and requirements on the portal or with the relevant Regional Office before submitting a claim.

Read the selected benefit and claimant category carefully. A family seeking more than one payment should make sure each applicable claim is included through the appropriate option or route. In particular, Form 20 is for the PF balance, Form 10D is the pension route, and Form 5IF is for EDLI; submitting one does not automatically establish that the others have been claimed.
EPFO’s claim pages use labels such as “Pension Claim filing by Family or Nominee in case of member’s demise” and “Death Claim filing by Nominee (Pension).” These labels can help locate the service, but the claimant still needs to choose the correct benefit and establish the relevant eligibility. If a portal route does not match the family’s situation, confirm the proper route with EPFO rather than forcing the case into a category that merely sounds similar.
Prepare the records before filing
Gather the member’s UAN and the death and beneficiary records before starting. For the online pension nominee flow, EPFO requests the deceased member’s UAN and the beneficiary’s Aadhaar, name and date of birth as declared in the e-nomination. The beneficiary also needs an Aadhaar-linked mobile for the portal’s authentication and filing process.

- Member’s UAN and available member details.
- Death certificate.
- Details of the spouse, children, nominee or dependent parent relevant to the benefit being claimed.
- Beneficiary bank-account details and bank proof where required.
- Age or date-of-birth proof where applicable to the pension claim.
- Information needed to check the e-nomination and family records against the portal.
EPFO’s online nominee pension page lists bank details and, as applicable, the death certificate, beneficiary bank proof and date-of-birth proof. It specifies PDF uploads and displays file-size and file-name limits on the page. Check the live page for those limits rather than relying on a saved copy or guessing an acceptable format.
Before uploading, compare the beneficiary’s name and date of birth with the information declared in the e-nomination and the identity records being used. Small differences can prevent a portal match or create a need to clarify the record. The page’s stated upload limits can also change, so prepare readable PDF documents and check the limits at the point of filing. The official instructions identify the documents that may be applicable; they do not mean that every claimant will need an identical packet.
The pension nominee flow includes Aadhaar authentication consent. The official EPFO form says: “I hereby consent to provide my Aadhaar Number, Biometric and/or One Time Pin (OTP) data for Aadhaar based authentication for the purpose of establishing my identity and filing online EPF/EPS/EDLI claim.” This is consent text shown in the online form, not a promise of approval or an additional benefit. Read the live portal’s terms and ensure the claimant can access the Aadhaar-linked mobile required by that route.
Keep copies of submitted records and any portal acknowledgement. They make it easier to refer to the same UAN, claimant details and documents if EPFO asks for clarification. Do not send sensitive identity or bank information through unofficial channels; use the official portal or the relevant EPFO office’s stated process.
A practical sequence for a death claim
- List the possible benefits separately. Note whether the family is seeking the EPF balance, EPS monthly pension, EDLI insurance, or more than one of these. Do not use “nominee claim” as a substitute for identifying the payment.
- Establish the relevant family and nomination facts. Check the member’s spouse and children, whether the member had a family at the relevant time, and the nomination information for the benefit in question. For EPS, a nominee pension route depends on the absence of eligible family under the scheme.
- Match each claim to its route. Use Form 20 for PF settlement, Form 10D for pension, and Form 5IF for EDLI, or use the composite death-claim option where appropriate. Review the current EPFO portal for the online claim route that fits the claimant and benefit.
- Compare portal details with supporting records. For an online nominee pension claim, ensure the beneficiary details correspond with the e-nomination entry. Have the required identity, death, bank and age documentation ready as applicable.
- Submit each applicable claim and retain the records. Keep copies of the submitted form or portal acknowledgement and supporting documents so the family can refer to the same details if EPFO requests clarification.
- Resolve route or eligibility uncertainty with EPFO. If the family status, nominee record, claimant category or current documentation requirement is unclear, confirm it with the EPFO portal or the relevant Regional Office rather than inferring entitlement from the nomination alone.
Examples: how the distinctions change the next step
A member leaves a spouse or children. The family should not stop after locating an EPF nominee entry. Check the EPF nomination under EPF rules, but assess EPS family pension separately against the spouse’s and children’s eligibility under the scheme. If the member’s death circumstances may qualify for EDLI, consider that insurance claim separately as well. These are separate questions, not a single winner-takes-all decision.

A member dies without an eligible EPS family. The family should check whether there is a valid EPS nomination and whether its conditions apply. The handbook describes nominee pension in the no-family case. If neither eligible family nor nominee exists, it identifies dependent father or mother as a possible fallback subject to scheme conditions. That is a reason to gather family and nomination records, not a guarantee that a particular relative will qualify.
A record names a nominee but family circumstances later changed. Do not assume the old entry controls. EPF nomination made when there was no family becomes invalid if the member later acquires one under the EPF Scheme text; EPFO’s overview also describes the corresponding family-status condition for EPS nomination. Confirm the facts relevant to each scheme and let EPFO assess the applicable record.

The family wants several types of payment. Make a checklist: Form 20 or its current online route for the EPF balance; Form 10D or the current pension route for EPS; and Form 5IF or the composite option for EDLI if its conditions may be met. The family should not interpret an acknowledgement for one benefit as confirmation that the other claims have been filed or decided.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes that delay or misdirect a claim
- Assuming one nominee receives everything. EPF balance, EPS pension and EDLI insurance are governed by distinct provisions and routes. Confirm the claimant separately for each.
- Relying on an old nomination without checking later family changes. EPFO’s material says an EPF nomination made when there was no family becomes invalid if the member later acquires one; EPS nomination also has a family-status condition.
- Filing only for the fund balance. Form 20 addresses the PF settlement. A family seeking monthly pension or EDLI should check the separate Form 10D or Form 5IF route, or the relevant composite option.
- Choosing a pension claimant category by name alone. Form 10D lists several claimant types, but eligibility depends on the claim circumstances and EPS conditions.
- Using historical material as a current payout schedule. EPFO’s handbook and downloadable forms contain older material and amendment history. In particular, do not infer a current EDLI amount from an older overview; check the current scheme provision and the member’s circumstances.
- Ignoring identity or upload mismatches. The online nominee pension route uses details recorded in the e-nomination and requires an Aadhaar-linked mobile. Check names, dates of birth and documentation against the live portal requirements before submitting.
- Assuming a single claim covers every scheme. The composite form groups claim options, but the family still needs to identify each benefit sought and follow the correct option. A Form 20 PF settlement is not itself a Form 10D pension claim or Form 5IF insurance claim.
- Treating a portal label as an eligibility decision. A route labeled for a nominee or family member helps identify a filing channel; it does not establish that the person qualifies under the scheme. Check family status, nomination and claimant category.
- Guessing the current upload specifications. The online page gives file type, name and size limits. Those details are procedural and can change, so check the live page instead of relying on an old screenshot or file prepared for a different portal workflow.
What this comparison can—and cannot—establish
EPFO’s published material establishes the broad distinction between EPF balance settlement, EPS survivor pension and EDLI insurance, as well as the identified forms and portal routes. It does not determine a particular family’s eligibility, award an amount, or guarantee that a historical form or handbook contains every current procedural requirement. A claimant should rely on the current EPFO route and the scheme terms applicable to the member’s case.

Frequently asked questions
Who gets EPFO pension after a member dies?
EPS pension is governed by its beneficiary rules. An eligible spouse and eligible children may qualify for family pension subject to scheme conditions. A nominee pension is a conditional route described for a member who leaves no eligible family; dependent parents may be a fallback under the handbook’s stated conditions where there is neither eligible family nor nominee. EPFO must determine the particular claim from the member’s circumstances and records.
Can an EPF nominee claim family pension?
Not simply because the person is named as the EPF nominee. EPF balance settlement and EPS pension are separate benefits with different rules. EPS gives priority to eligible family under its conditions; the nominee pension provision applies conditionally where the member leaves no eligible family. Check the e-nomination and family status for the pension claim rather than assuming the EPF nominee designation decides it.
Which form is used for an EPFO death claim?
The form depends on the payment: Form 20 for the deceased member’s EPF balance, Form 10D for monthly EPS pension, and Form 5IF for EDLI insurance. EPFO’s death-case composite form groups options for the three. The live portal also has separate nominee death-claim and family/nominee pension routes, so check the current service and make sure each applicable benefit is selected.
What if the member had no eligible family or nominee?
EPFO’s EPS handbook identifies dependent father or mother as a possible fallback where there is neither eligible family nor nominee, subject to scheme conditions. This does not automatically establish entitlement for a parent; the claimant category and dependency and other applicable conditions must be assessed by EPFO. Form 10D is the identified pension route.

What documents should a nominee prepare for an online pension claim?
The online nominee pension flow asks for the deceased member’s UAN and beneficiary details as recorded in e-nomination, including Aadhaar, name and date of birth, and requires an Aadhaar-linked mobile. Depending on the case, EPFO lists death certificate, beneficiary bank proof and date-of-birth proof, alongside bank-account details. The page specifies PDF upload and file-name and size limits; check the live portal for current requirements.
Does EDLI pay a monthly pension, and how much is it?
EDLI is a separate insurance benefit, not a monthly pension. It may apply under qualifying conditions, including death in service, and the identified route is Form 5IF or the death-case composite form. Do not rely on an older EPFO overview for a current amount; check the scheme provision and the member’s circumstances with EPFO.
Does filing Form 20 also claim pension and EDLI?
Form 20 is the PF settlement route. EPS pension and EDLI have separate routes—Form 10D and Form 5IF—or may be selected through the composite death-claim process. A family seeking more than the PF balance should verify that each applicable claim has been filed through its relevant option.

Who gets EPFO pension after a member dies?
EPS pension follows its own beneficiary rules. An eligible spouse and eligible children may qualify for family pension, subject to scheme conditions. Nominee pension is a conditional route where the member leaves no eligible family; dependent parents may be a fallback under the handbook’s conditions where there is neither eligible family nor nominee.
Can an EPF nominee claim family pension?
Not simply because the person is named as the EPF nominee. EPF balance settlement and EPS pension are separate benefits. EPS family rules apply first where eligible family exists; a nominee pension is relevant conditionally when the member leaves no eligible family.
Which form is used for an EPFO death claim?
Form 20 is for the deceased member’s EPF balance, Form 10D for monthly EPS pension, and Form 5IF for EDLI insurance. EPFO’s composite death-claim form groups options for the three, and the live portal also provides online routes. Check the current portal and select each benefit sought.
What documents are needed for an online nominee pension claim?
EPFO’s flow requests the member’s UAN and beneficiary Aadhaar, name and date of birth as recorded in e-nomination, and an Aadhaar-linked mobile. Depending on the case, it lists bank details, death certificate, bank proof and age or date-of-birth proof. Check the live page for PDF and upload limits.

Is EDLI a pension, and can I rely on an older amount quoted online?
No. EDLI is a separate insurance benefit, not a monthly pension, and its eligibility conditions include qualifying death-in-service circumstances. Do not assume an older overview states the current amount; check the current scheme provision and EPFO guidance.
If the member left no eligible family or nominee, can a parent claim pension?
EPFO’s EPS handbook identifies a dependent father or mother as a possible fallback in that situation, subject to scheme conditions. It is not automatic; EPFO must assess the claimant and case records.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: EPF balance, EPS pension and EDLI insurance are different claims. An EPF nominee is not automatically the EPS pension beneficiary: eligible family has priority under EPS, while nominee pension is a conditional no-eligible-family route. Match each benefit to Form 20, Form 10D or Form 5IF—or the relevant current composite or online route—and check current requirements with EPFO.
