Freddie Mac common stock trades over the counter under ticker FMCC, with its 2025 Form 10-K identifying OTCQB as the quotation venue. It is not listed on the NYSE or Nasdaq. Before considering a purchase, understand that Freddie Mac has been in federal conservatorship since September 2008, Treasury holds senior preferred stock and a warrant tied to 79.9% of common stock, and ordinary common and preferred dividends were eliminated. FMCC and Freddie Mac’s many preferred-stock series are distinct securities—not interchangeable ways to invest.

What Freddie Mac stock is—and where it trades

Freddie Mac, formally the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, is a business corporation operating under the conservatorship of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA). Its common shares are publicly accessible through the over-the-counter (OTC) market, rather than a national securities exchange. Freddie Mac identifies the common-stock ticker as FMCC; the company’s 2025 Form 10-K says the shares are quoted on OTCQB.

OTC quotation does not mean every brokerage accepts orders, that a quoted price reflects a completed trade, or that a position will be as easy to buy or sell as an exchange-listed stock. The Form 10-K cautions that OTC quotations may be inter-dealer quotations and may not represent actual transactions. Confirm the current quote and trading conditions with the broker that would handle the order.

Freddie Mac says common stock began trading exclusively on the OTC market on July 8, 2010. The company’s Investor FAQ gives the ticker as FMCC; the 2025 Form 10-K specifies OTCQB as the quotation venue. These details identify the security and venue, but they do not establish whether a particular broker currently offers access or what its fees and order rules are.

For a reader asking, “Is FMCC publicly traded?”, the practical answer is yes: it is quoted on OTCQB and may be available through brokerages that handle the relevant OTC security. That is different from saying it is exchange-listed or available in every account. The OTC venue also makes it especially important to distinguish a displayed quote from an actual transaction. A price shown by a data provider may not be the price at which an order can be filled, and a quote may not tell you how many shares could be traded at that level.

Freddie Mac’s common-stock page links to quote, chart, and historical-price tools, but the company disclaims responsibility for the third-party stock data. Use those tools as an information starting point, not a guarantee about execution. Check the broker’s own current quote, order preview, and trade confirmation, and make sure you are looking at the correct symbol before placing an order.

Common stock and preferred stock are different securities

“Freddie Mac stock” can refer to common shares or to one of many preferred-stock series. A ticker search is not enough to establish what rights, payment terms, or risks an investor is taking on. For preferred shares in particular, verify the exact symbol and CUSIP and read the governing certificate or offering document for that series.

Feature Common stock Preferred stock
How to identify it Freddie Mac common stock trades under FMCC. Freddie Mac lists multiple distinct series, each with its own OTC symbol and CUSIP. Examples include FMCKJ, FMCKI, FMCKL, FMCKN, FMCKM, FMCKO, FMCCP, FMCCN, FMCCO, FMCCM, FMCCL, FMCCK, FMCCG, FMCCH, FMCKK, and FMCCI.
Dividends Freddie Mac says future common dividends were eliminated in 2008. Freddie Mac says future preferred dividends were also eliminated, apart from dividends on Treasury’s senior preferred stock. A legacy coupon rate does not show that a payment is currently authorized.
Terms and rights Common-stock history includes voting rights, but FHFA’s conservatorship authority shapes practical governance. Payment priority, liquidation rights, voting rights, and other terms must be checked in the governing document for the specific series; they cannot be inferred from the word “preferred.”
Trading venue OTC; the 2025 Form 10-K identifies OTCQB as the quotation venue. Freddie Mac’s listing provides symbols for individual series; confirm current market information and availability with a broker.

The company’s preferred-stock listing is useful for identifying series and symbols, but it is not a substitute for the instrument’s governing terms. Do not assume that every preferred series has the same dividend provisions, seniority, conversion rights, voting rights, or recovery prospects.

Common and preferred shares are not two labels for the same investment. FMCC identifies the common stock. A preferred ticker identifies a particular preferred series, and that series has its own CUSIP and contractual terms. A reader comparing two symbols should begin by confirming the security type and exact issue—not by assuming that preferred means safer, income-producing, or entitled to a particular recovery.

For each preferred issue, the governing document matters because it sets out the rights attached to that particular security. Freddie Mac’s public list helps locate the series, but the list alone does not answer every question about payment priority, liquidation treatment, voting, conversion, or other rights. If those terms affect an investment decision, read the instrument itself and compare its provisions directly with those of any other series being considered.

The word “preferred” does not establish that a holder will receive a dividend, that the security ranks ahead of every other claim, or that it will recover a specified amount in a future event. Those conclusions cannot be drawn from a ticker or a historical coupon label. The sources do not support a blanket conclusion that common shares or any particular preferred series will outperform or have a better recovery outcome.

What conservatorship means for shareholders

Freddie Mac entered conservatorship on September 6, 2008. FHFA explains that, as conservator, it has the powers of Freddie Mac’s management, board, and shareholders, as well as ultimate authority over the company’s operations. The agency describes Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae as continuing to operate as business corporations under conservatorship. Read the FHFA conservatorship overview for the agency’s description of its role.

FHFA summarizes its role by stating, “As conservator, FHFA has the powers of the management, boards, and shareholders of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.” The agency also says, “Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac continue to operate as business corporations.” Those statements help distinguish conservatorship from an ordinary change in a company’s board: the companies continue operating as corporations, while the conservator holds extensive authority over their management and operations.

That authority matters when interpreting the historical voting rights attached to common stock. Freddie Mac’s FAQ says shares became available for ownership and trading by all investors on January 3, 1989. On August 9, 1989, Congress amended the charter to convert that class into Voting Common Stock, whose holders had the right to elect 13 directors. The company says the shares and their predecessors were listed on the NYSE through July 7, 2010, before moving to exclusive OTC trading the next day.

Those dates explain the security’s history; they should not be read as a promise that buying FMCC today gives an investor ordinary practical control over company decisions. FHFA’s stated conservator powers are central to how governance works during conservatorship.

In other words, historical voting rights and present-day practical influence are separate questions. The company’s FAQ describes the class’s historical right to elect directors, while FHFA’s conservatorship overview describes the authority exercised by the conservator. A prospective shareholder should not treat the historic director-election language as evidence that a small individual holding currently carries the same practical governance influence as common stock in a conventionally governed public company.

Why Treasury’s position matters

Freddie Mac reports that the U.S. Treasury holds senior preferred stock and a warrant representing 79.9% of the company’s common stock. The 79.9% figure describes the warrant’s underlying common-share percentage; it does not mean Treasury currently owns that percentage of outstanding common shares through exercised warrant shares. The warrant is a disclosed instrument, not evidence that it will be exercised on a particular date.

Treasury’s position matters to both the capital structure and the potential effect on common shareholders. The senior preferred stock has a distinct position in the company’s capital structure, while exercise of the warrant could affect common ownership. Freddie Mac also says its agreement with Treasury restricts equity issuance and repurchases. The company’s preferred-stock page states that, while Treasury’s senior preferred stock remains outstanding, Freddie Mac generally may not redeem, purchase, retire, or otherwise acquire equity securities without Treasury’s prior written consent, subject to stated exceptions.

For an investor comparing common shares with a preferred series, Treasury’s position is a separate consideration from that series’ own terms. The senior preferred stock is Treasury’s instrument; it is not the same security as any of the listed legacy preferred series available under individual OTC symbols. The warrant is also distinct from currently exercised common shares. Keeping these instruments separate avoids turning the disclosed 79.9% warrant figure into an inaccurate statement about present common-stock ownership.

The practical consequences depend on government decisions and future events. The disclosed instruments and restrictions do not establish a particular outcome for conservatorship, a future capital structure, common-share dilution, or any restructuring. Review the relevant disclosures in Freddie Mac’s 2025 Form 10-K and subsequent company filings rather than treating a possible policy change as settled.

Do Freddie Mac shareholders receive dividends?

Freddie Mac’s Investor FAQ says future common and preferred dividends were eliminated in 2008, except for dividends on Treasury’s senior preferred stock. Its preferred-stock page repeats that distinction. In other words, do not infer that an individual investor receives a dividend simply because a preferred series has a historical coupon label or because the company pays dividends on Treasury’s senior preferred shares.

Before evaluating any particular security for income, check current company disclosures and the specific instrument’s terms for whether a payment is authorized and payable to holders. The company’s statements establish the general elimination of ordinary common and preferred dividends; they do not establish a future payment or a recovery value for any series.

This distinction is important when a preferred security is presented with a coupon rate in an account display, quote service, or historical document. That label describes a feature of the security’s terms; on its own it does not establish that holders are currently receiving the stated amount. Likewise, a dividend paid on Treasury’s senior preferred stock is not evidence that holders of ordinary common stock or another preferred series receive dividends.

The practical question is not simply “Does Freddie Mac pay dividends?” It is which security, which recipient, and whether a payment is currently authorized. Freddie Mac’s statements distinguish Treasury’s senior preferred dividends from ordinary common and preferred dividends. An investor assessing a specific issue should check current company disclosures and its governing terms rather than projecting a historical rate into the future.

How to check a security before placing an order

  1. Search the exact ticker in your brokerage account. For common shares, search FMCC and confirm the result identifies Freddie Mac common stock. The ticker is listed in the company’s Investor FAQ. Do not select a similarly named security based only on a partial match.
  2. Confirm OTC access and trading rules. Ask or check whether the brokerage currently accepts trades in the OTC market and what conditions apply to OTCQB securities. Review applicable order types, fees, account eligibility, and any restrictions. Freddie Mac’s disclosures establish the ticker and quotation venue, not a particular broker’s current terms.
  3. For preferred shares, verify the complete issue. Match the ticker and CUSIP to the specific series using Freddie Mac’s preferred-stock page and the relevant certificate or offering document. Read that instrument’s payment, priority, voting, and other provisions instead of assuming all preferred shares work alike.
  4. Read current company filings. Review the latest Form 10-K and subsequent 10-Q and 8-K filings, along with investor updates, for changes affecting conservatorship, capital structure, Treasury agreements, or stated risks. Freddie Mac maintains an investor information page with links and contact information.
  5. Check quote and execution information. Freddie Mac’s common-stock page links to quote, chart, and historical-price tools. The company disclaims responsibility for the linked third-party stock data, and the Form 10-K warns that OTC quotations may not represent actual transactions. Use the broker’s current quote and trade information to assess the order you are actually placing.
  6. Review the order before submitting it. Confirm the ticker, security description, share quantity, order type, and any displayed price or fees in the broker’s order preview. A displayed quotation is not a guarantee of execution at that price.

This process is about verifying what security an order would buy and what the broker will do with it; it is not a conclusion that the security is suitable for a particular investor. The company’s filings establish the market venue and disclose major capital-structure features, but they do not establish a brokerage’s current access, account eligibility, commission, or execution terms. Those details vary by broker and must be checked with the firm handling the order.

When reviewing the order preview, compare the symbol and full security description with the issue you intended to trade. This is especially important for preferred securities because the company lists many individual series with similar-looking symbols. Check the CUSIP where available, and pause if the broker’s description, market designation, or issue does not match the documents you reviewed. Confirm the order type and any fee information shown before submitting; neither a displayed quote nor an order preview promises a fill at a particular price.

How to compare FMCC with a Freddie Mac preferred series

A useful comparison starts with six separate questions: What is the security type and exact ticker/CUSIP? Is any dividend currently authorized for that security? What voting rights are described, and how does conservatorship affect practical governance? What seniority and liquidation provisions appear in the specific governing document? How do Treasury’s senior preferred stock and warrant relate to the capital structure? What are the current market venue, liquidity, broker access, fees, and execution conditions?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These questions prevent a common shortcut: comparing only a preferred series’ historical coupon with the price of FMCC. That leaves out whether the coupon is currently payable, how the series’ actual terms treat payment priority, and how readily either security can be bought or sold through a particular broker. The available company listing is a directory of preferred series and symbols, not a substitute for this issue-by-issue comparison.

  • Comfortable Non-Slip Grip:The ergonomic pen barrel has a soft rubberized coating for a comfortable, non-slip grip, so you won't get fatigued even after long hours of writing.

The six points also separate facts that can be verified from outcomes that remain uncertain. Tickers, CUSIPs, governing terms, and the company’s stated dividend position can be checked in company materials and security documents. Future government decisions, possible changes in the capital structure, and any eventual recovery cannot be established from a symbol list or a legacy coupon label. Freddie Mac’s disclosures do not support a blanket prediction that common or preferred shares will be the better performer.

Risks to assess before investing

  • Government and policy dependence: FHFA has extensive authority over Freddie Mac as conservator. Future decisions about the company’s status and capital structure are not established outcomes.
  • Treasury capital claims and potential dilution: Treasury’s senior preferred stock and warrant are material features of the capital structure. The warrant’s stated 79.9% underlying-share figure should not be confused with currently exercised ownership.
  • No assumed ordinary dividends: Company materials say future common and non-Treasury preferred dividends were eliminated. A historical rate or coupon label is not evidence of current income.
  • OTC quote and execution limits: A displayed quotation may not correspond to a completed transaction. Broker access, liquidity, execution, and fees require current verification.
  • Preferred-series differences: A list of symbols alone does not establish priority, recovery, or identical rights. Those questions require the actual governing terms for the issue under consideration.

These considerations do not determine whether FMCC or any preferred series is suitable for an individual. The relevant decision also depends on the current price and trading conditions, account access, the specific security’s terms, and the investor’s circumstances—details that must be checked at the time of a decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Freddie Mac’s stock ticker?

Freddie Mac common stock trades under ticker FMCC. The company’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies OTCQB as its quotation venue; it is not listed on the NYSE or Nasdaq.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I buy Freddie Mac stock through a brokerage?

FMCC trades in the OTC market, but access depends on the brokerage, account eligibility, and its current trading rules. Search the exact ticker, confirm the security description, and check fees, order types, and execution details with the broker.

What is the difference between FMCC and Freddie Mac preferred stock?

FMCC is the common stock. Freddie Mac also lists numerous distinct preferred-stock series, each with its own symbol and CUSIP. Their specific terms—including payment, priority, voting, and other rights—must be checked in the governing documents for each series.

Does Freddie Mac pay dividends to common or preferred shareholders?

Freddie Mac says future common and preferred dividends were eliminated in 2008, apart from dividends on Treasury’s senior preferred stock. A historical coupon label does not establish that a preferred holder is currently receiving payments.

Does buying FMCC give me ordinary voting control of Freddie Mac?

Freddie Mac describes historical voting rights for common stock, including the right to elect 13 directors after the 1989 charter amendment. FHFA says that as conservator it has the powers of Freddie Mac’s management, board, and shareholders, so those historical rights should not be treated as ordinary practical control today.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Treasury already own 79.9% of Freddie Mac’s common shares?

The 79.9% figure reported by Freddie Mac describes the common shares represented by Treasury’s warrant. It is not a statement that Treasury currently owns that percentage of outstanding common shares through exercised warrant shares.

The Bottom Line

Freddie Mac common stock trades OTC under FMCC, while its preferred securities are a collection of distinct issues with separate symbols and terms. Before placing an order, verify the security and broker’s current trading conditions, review the relevant governing documents and recent filings, and account for conservatorship, Treasury’s senior preferred stock and warrant, and the elimination of ordinary common and preferred dividends. A ticker or historical coupon alone does not establish current income, control, or future recovery.
