Check the owner’s manual and warranty for your exact vehicle—year, model, engine, and market—then compare the approved blend with the fuel label. “Diesel” alone does not mean a vehicle can use every biodiesel blend. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) says all original equipment manufacturers approve B5, but approval for higher blends varies. If your documents do not clearly approve the blend, ask the manufacturer or dealer before filling up.
Start with the vehicle’s fuel requirement
First confirm that the vehicle has a diesel engine. Biodiesel blends are fuels for compression-ignition diesel engines; guidance about diesel compatibility does not establish that a gasoline vehicle can use them.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Next, check the fuel section of the owner’s manual and the warranty for the exact vehicle. Match the year, model, engine, and market: a manual for a similar model, a different engine, or another country may not apply. Look for an explicit maximum biodiesel blend, any required fuel standard, and operating or maintenance conditions. If one document is unclear or differs from another, ask the manufacturer or an authorized dealer to clarify before using a higher blend.
- Record the vehicle’s year, model, engine, and market.
- Find the manual’s fuel requirements and the warranty’s biodiesel restrictions.
- Note the maximum blend and any conditions involving servicing, storage, or weather.
- Compare those requirements with the pump label and the fuel’s stated quality standard.
The AFDC’s general statement that all OEMs approve B5 is useful background, not a substitute for the vehicle-specific instructions. The AFDC also advises owners to consult vehicle and engine warranty statements before using biodiesel.

Read approval as a set of requirements, not as a single yes-or-no label. A manual may set a maximum percentage, name a fuel standard, and attach conditions to use. A vehicle approved for a particular blend under specified conditions is not necessarily approved for every blend, climate, or maintenance schedule. Make a short note of each requirement before comparing it with the pump: maximum blend, specification, service instructions, and any storage or weather limits.
Use the current documentation applicable to the vehicle’s own market. The same model name may cover different engines or markets, and examples from another manufacturer or model year cannot fill gaps in your manual. If the owner’s manual is silent but the warranty mentions biodiesel, or vice versa, do not assume that the less restrictive statement controls. Ask the manufacturer or dealer to resolve the mismatch and, if possible, identify the exact blend and specification you are asking about.
Read the blend label correctly
The “B” number indicates the percentage range of biodiesel in a blend. In AFDC usage, B5 contains up to 5% biodiesel, while B20 contains 6% to 20%. A label that says B20 therefore identifies a substantially higher blend than B5; it is not simply another name for diesel that meets a vehicle’s B5 limit.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

In U.S. pump-label guidance, B5 or lower may be sold as diesel without a separate concentration label, while higher blends should be identified. So a pump that does not display a biodiesel percentage does not, by itself, tell you the exact concentration. If a vehicle allows only up to B5 and the fuel’s blend is uncertain, verify it with the retailer rather than assuming the fuel is acceptable.
Follow the stated maximum, not a general idea that a blend is “mostly diesel.” A vehicle approved through B20 may accept a range up to that limit, but a B20 pump is not an appropriate choice for a vehicle whose documentation caps biodiesel at B5.
Keep the blend ranges straight when reading a label or manual. B5 means up to 5% biodiesel; B20 means 6% to 20% in the AFDC definitions. The term “B20” does not mean exactly 20% in every instance, and approval of B5 does not imply approval of B20. When a manual sets a ceiling, compare the pump blend with that ceiling rather than trying to estimate whether the fuel is “close enough.”
If the pump does not provide a blend number, ask the retailer what blend is being sold. In the United States, the fact that a lower blend may be sold without a separate concentration label is not evidence that the fuel contains no biodiesel. Conversely, a missing B5 label is not proof that a higher blend is being sold. The label, retailer’s information, and vehicle documentation together are the useful checks.

Blend level and fuel quality are separate checks. A fuel can meet a recognized specification and still exceed the blend limit set by a vehicle maker. In the U.S. guidance cited by the AFDC and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the relevant examples are:

| Fuel or blend | U.S. specification cited | What the specification check does—and does not—tell you |
|---|---|---|
| B5 and lower | ASTM D975 | Identifies the cited diesel-fuel specification for these blends; it does not override a vehicle-specific restriction. |
| B6–B20 | ASTM D7467 | Applies to the cited blend range. Confirm that the vehicle maker approves the blend as well. |
| B100 used as blendstock | ASTM D6751 | Specifies the biodiesel blendstock; it does not mean a vehicle is approved to run on B100. |
These standards are U.S. examples, not a worldwide list of fuel rules. Use the specifications named in the vehicle documentation for its market. Do not treat a retailer’s claim that fuel is “specification-compliant” as proof that your particular vehicle is approved for that blend.
Think of the blend and specification as two independent boxes to check. The blend percentage answers how much biodiesel is in the fuel; the standard identifies a quality specification for the fuel or blendstock. Passing one check does not automatically pass the other. For example, B6–B20 fuel meeting ASTM D7467 still needs to fall within the vehicle maker’s permitted blend range and any additional conditions in the manual.
The distinction matters especially when a specification refers to B100 as a component used to make a blend. ASTM D6751 is cited for B100 blendstock; it is not an approval for using neat B100 in a vehicle. Do not read the presence of that standard on a fuel document as permission to use B100, or infer that a vehicle approved for a biodiesel blend can run on the blendstock by itself.

What the manuals show about approval differences
Approvals are not uniform across manufacturers, models, engines, or markets. The examples below illustrate why the manual for your own vehicle matters; none establishes compatibility for a different vehicle.
| Document example | Guidance described | How to use the example |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 GM Duramax supplement | Cautions against blends above B20 for the vehicle it covers. | Do not apply this limit to other GM vehicles or engines. |
| 2022 Ram manual | Describes conditional approval through B20. | Check the conditions in the applicable manual; “through B20” is not universal approval for Ram vehicles. |
| 2025 Kia manual | Describes B7 compatibility and B30 compatibility for specified engines under named standards. | Approval is tied to the specified engines, standards, and the manual’s market. It is not a general Kia rule. |
| 2021 Ford F-650/750 manual | Includes fuel specifications, service requirements, storage limits, and cold-weather considerations. | Heavy-duty truck guidance may include conditions beyond a maximum blend; it should not be generalized to other models. |
A useful approval is more than a blend number. Check whether the vehicle maker requires a particular specification, service interval, storage practice, or temperature-related precaution. If the manual gives conditional approval, treat those conditions as part of the approval—not optional footnotes.
The examples show why it is risky to answer the question by brand alone. The 2018 GM Duramax supplement, 2022 Ram manual, 2025 Kia manual, and 2021 Ford F-650/750 manual describe different limits or conditions for the vehicles they cover. Even when two documents mention the same blend, one may make approval conditional on a named standard or operating requirement. The vehicle’s year, engine, market, and the actual wording of its documents all matter.
When comparing two vehicles or two possible fuels, use the same checklist for each: what is the maximum biodiesel percentage; which quality standard applies; does the document cover the vehicle’s exact year, engine, and market; are warranty or maintenance conditions attached; and do climate or storage conditions affect the decision? This prevents a broad statement such as “the manufacturer allows biodiesel” from obscuring an important limit or exception.

Do not use B20 just because the vehicle is diesel or because the fuel is sold as a diesel product. If your documentation allows only B5, does not address B20, or is ambiguous, ask the manufacturer or dealer whether that exact vehicle may use B20. NREL’s Biodiesel Handling and Use Guide: Sixth Edition recommends consulting the engine manufacturer or dealer before using blends higher than B20; asking before using a blend not addressed by your documentation is also the prudent way to resolve uncertainty.

- Check the manual and warranty for the maximum blend and any conditions.
- Confirm that the pump’s blend and stated fuel specification match those requirements.
- If B20 exceeds the approved limit or approval is unclear, do not fill with it until the manufacturer or dealer confirms compatibility.
- If you cannot confirm approval, look for a fuel option that meets the documented limit or contact the retailer about the blend available.
If you have already filled with a blend that may exceed the vehicle’s limit, contact the manufacturer or dealer for vehicle-specific advice. Do not assume that the vehicle is damaged, and do not assume that a consumer additive or modification can make an unapproved blend acceptable.
When you contact the dealer or manufacturer, have the vehicle’s year, model, engine, and market information ready. State the blend you are considering, the pump label, and any fuel specification shown by the retailer. Ask whether that exact vehicle may use that blend and whether the answer depends on a service interval, storage period, or temperature condition. A general answer about a brand or “diesel vehicles” may not settle a model-specific warranty question.
If the answer is conditional, write down the conditions and compare them with how you actually use the vehicle. For instance, an approval that includes service or storage instructions is not equivalent to unconditional approval. If the seller cannot identify the blend, that uncertainty remains; do not treat the fuel’s availability or its “renewable” description as confirmation that it meets the vehicle’s requirements.

Account for performance, weather, and storage
Compatibility is the first decision; operating characteristics matter after a blend is approved. The AFDC reports that B20 has 1% to 2% less energy per gallon than petroleum diesel. It also says many users notice no performance or economy difference. That is general fuel information, not a guarantee about a particular vehicle’s fuel economy, range, or performance.
The energy figure is a comparison of fuel energy per gallon, not a promise that every driver will see a particular change at the pump or in everyday use. Actual performance and economy observations vary, and the AFDC’s point that many users notice no difference should not be turned into a guarantee for every vehicle. The vehicle-specific approval still comes first; a favorable general comparison does not make an unapproved blend acceptable.
Higher biodiesel proportions can matter in cold weather and during storage. AFDC and NREL guidance flags cold-weather gelling and storage concerns, especially as the blend rises above B20. Follow the vehicle maker’s instructions for the climate and storage period you expect; an approval under one set of operating conditions should not be assumed to cover every condition.
Do not reduce cold-weather guidance to a single blend number without checking the vehicle’s manual. The 2021 Ford F-650/750 manual is one example of a document that addresses cold weather and storage in addition to fuel specifications and service. It applies to that heavy-duty truck guidance, not automatically to a passenger vehicle. If you expect to operate in cold conditions or store fuel or a vehicle for a period, look specifically for those subjects in the applicable documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere can also be a maintenance consideration when moving to high-level blends. AFDC says B100’s solvent effect can loosen deposits accumulated during petroleum-diesel use, potentially restricting or clogging filters during the first tanks of high-level blends. This is a reason to check the maker’s maintenance guidance, not a prediction that every vehicle will have filter trouble.

This filter caution is about a potential effect, not a certainty or a reason to change service intervals on your own. Check whether the manufacturer specifies a service procedure or interval for the blend you intend to use. Do not infer from the general caution that every vehicle needs an extra filter change, or that a vehicle can safely move to a higher blend without the manufacturer’s approval.
B100 is not simply a higher number on the pump. NREL notes that it may require special handling or equipment changes. Do not infer that a vehicle approved for a low blend—or even for B20—can use B100.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep biodiesel distinct from renewable diesel
Biodiesel is a fuel made from fats or oils and used as a blendstock. Renewable diesel is a different fuel. Similar names or a claim that a product is renewable do not establish that it has the same composition, specification, or vehicle approval as biodiesel. Check the product identity and the vehicle maker’s instructions rather than relying on the word “renewable.”
This distinction matters when a station or supplier uses broad fuel descriptions. “Renewable” is not a blend number, and it does not tell you whether the product is biodiesel, renewable diesel, or a blend that fits your vehicle’s documentation. Confirm the fuel’s identity, blend level, and relevant specification before deciding. Do not assume that an approval for one fuel type transfers to another merely because both are described as renewable.
A quick decision checklist
- Diesel engine? Confirm the vehicle uses a diesel engine.
- Exact documentation? Use the manual and warranty for its year, model, engine, and market.
- Blend within the stated limit? Compare the maximum approved percentage with the pump’s B rating.
- Fuel standard identified? Check the required specification as well as the blend percentage.
- Conditions understood? Account for service, weather, and storage requirements in the manual.
- Still uncertain? Ask the manufacturer or dealer before using the higher or unaddressed blend.
For a final cross-check, compare the answers side by side: your vehicle’s maximum blend and any conditions, the pump’s stated blend, and the specification applicable to that blend. If one of those items is missing or conflicts with the others, pause and verify instead of guessing. A specification-compliant fuel can still exceed the vehicle limit; an approved blend can still require particular operating or maintenance conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Can every diesel vehicle use B20?
No. The AFDC says all OEMs approve B5, while approval of higher blends varies. Check the exact vehicle’s manual and warranty for B20 approval, including any engine, market, specification, or operating conditions. Do not apply one manufacturer’s approval to another vehicle.
Does a pump that says diesel mean the fuel is B5?
Not necessarily. In U.S. guidance, B5 and lower may be sold as diesel without a separate concentration label, while higher blends should be identified. If you need to know the exact blend, ask the retailer rather than interpreting an unlabeled pump as proof of a particular percentage.
Does ASTM compliance prove my vehicle can use the fuel?
No. ASTM D975, D7467, and D6751 identify cited fuel or blendstock specifications, but they do not replace the vehicle maker’s blend approval. Check the blend limit and applicable standard in the vehicle documentation.

Can a vehicle approved for B20 run on B100?
Do not assume so. B100 is a different, much higher concentration; the cited U.S. standard for B100 as blendstock is ASTM D6751, not a vehicle approval. NREL says B100 may require special handling or equipment changes. Consult the vehicle manufacturer or engine maker before considering it.
Will B20 reduce fuel economy?
The AFDC reports that B20 has 1% to 2% less energy per gallon than petroleum diesel and says many users notice no performance or economy difference. That general information does not predict the result for a specific vehicle, and it does not establish that the vehicle is approved for B20.
What if I have already used a blend above my vehicle’s stated limit?
Contact the manufacturer or dealer for advice specific to your vehicle and the blend used. Do not assume damage has occurred, but do not rely on an additive or modification to override the vehicle maker’s restriction.
