What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start by identifying when the crash or black screen occurs, then test the PC at default settings and check AMD’s release notes for your exact Radeon driver and affected game or app. A black screen alone does not prove the graphics driver is the cause. If the evidence points to a damaged or conflicting driver installation, AMD supports reinstalling with the installer’s Factory Reset option or using AMD Cleanup Utility first.
1. Record the failure pattern
Before changing settings, note what the display and PC do: does the screen flicker, go black and recover, remain black, or does the whole computer restart? Record which game or application was running and whether the problem began after a graphics-driver, firmware, BIOS, Windows, or hardware change. AMD recommends checking these details before making software changes or disassembling the system. (AMD stability troubleshooting)

A driver timeout, crash, hang, black screen, blue screen, or hardware error can have overlapping causes. AMD lists possibilities including BIOS configuration, unsupported memory, overclocking, overheating, outdated or corrupted software, conflicts, and faulty hardware. Treat the symptom as a clue, not a diagnosis. (AMD stability troubleshooting; AMD Radeon stability troubleshooting)
2. Establish a stable baseline
Where practical, restore CPU, memory, and GPU settings to their normal factory defaults and temporarily remove overclocking or tuning from the picture. AMD also suggests disabling third-party monitoring and overclocking utilities and reducing nonessential connected devices while isolating stability problems. This can reveal a conflict, but does not prove a particular utility or device is responsible. (AMD Radeon stability troubleshooting)

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
If the problem happens only in one game or application, update it and check the software vendor’s known-issue information, as AMD advises. A failure limited to a single workload points toward a narrower compatibility issue than one that occurs across unrelated tasks, though it does not establish the cause by itself. (AMD Radeon stability troubleshooting)
3. Check the exact Radeon driver release notes
Find the release notes for the installed driver and compare the listed issues with your Radeon model, game, graphics API, and settings. AMD recommends applying a published workaround for a known issue; if there is no workaround, consider a driver version on which the problem did not occur. Radeon support varies by product, so there is no single rollback version that is appropriate for every GPU, operating system, and workload. (AMD Radeon release notes; AMD stability troubleshooting)

4. Reinstall the driver when corruption or conflict is plausible
AMD provides two supported cleanup paths: select Factory Reset in the Radeon Software installer, or run AMD Cleanup Utility before installing the graphics package. Choose this step when the problem began around a driver change or other evidence suggests a damaged or conflicting graphics installation, rather than treating it as the automatic answer to every black screen. Using AMD Cleanup Utility
AMD describes Cleanup Utility as a standalone Windows tool that removes previously installed AMD graphics and audio drivers and software to prepare for a new graphics installation. It does not remove or modify AMD chipset drivers on AMD-powered systems. AMD recommends running it in Windows Safe Mode for best results; finish Windows Update before using it, and restart the PC for the cleanup changes to take effect. (AMD Cleanup Utility)
Expect the screen to flicker or go blank briefly during cleanup. AMD estimates the process can take 15–20 minutes (AMD, 2025). The utility creates a restore point before cleaning; AMD directs users to that restore point if a problem occurs during or after cleanup. (AMD Cleanup Utility: process and recovery details)

5. Investigate system stability if the issue continues
If crashes persist after checking the game and driver, work through broader stability factors methodically rather than buying replacement parts based on the screen symptom alone. AMD’s guidance includes checking BIOS and firmware settings, memory configuration, temperatures, overclocking, software conflicts, hardware installation, and whether the power supply meets system requirements and is connected to a known-good power source. It also lists system-file checks and Windows recovery options when operating-system integrity is in question. (AMD Radeon stability troubleshooting)
