Correct your end date, tailor your resume to the role, and explain a layoff or employment gap only as much as needed. Keep achievements and skills in focus.

Update the end date of your former job, then tailor your resume to the role you want by bringing relevant achievements, skills, and results into clear view. You do not need to turn a layoff into a long defense: use accurate dates, explain the departure briefly only when it helps, and prepare a concise answer for interviews.

What to change first

  1. Correct your employment dates. Show the former role as ended; do not leave it looking current. Check all dates, names, titles, and contact details for accuracy. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment Workshop Participant Guide recommends careful review, and CareerOneStop advises using truthful dates.
  2. Retarget the summary and experience. Adjust the opening summary and most relevant bullets for each position. Use terms from the job posting when they accurately describe your skills and work.
  3. Lead with evidence. Put relevant accomplishments, responsibilities, scope, skills, and credible results where a recruiter can find them quickly. Keep your actual job titles and history intact.

For a UK application, the National Careers Service advises people made redundant that they may note that an employer restructured while retaining the experience and skills gained in the role (Redundancy and dealing with losing your job). UK applicants commonly use “CV”; U.S. sources generally refer to a “resume,” and application conventions can differ.

Whether to mention the layoff

There is no single required formula. CareerOneStop says a resume should use truthful dates but does not have to explain a gap; if useful, the reason can instead be discussed in a cover letter or interview (Special tips). If a restructuring or role elimination is useful context, a short factual phrase is enough. Avoid blame, speculation, or a lengthy defense.

Prepare a calm interview answer that states the role ended because of a layoff or restructuring, then turns to what you contributed and what you can bring to the new position. Keep the resume focused on qualifications rather than making the departure its central story.

How to handle a growing employment gap

A gap does not automatically need a special entry or a long explanation. The UK National Careers Service says gaps are not a problem in themselves, though employers may ask about them; it recommends being open and focusing on transferable skills and learning (Explain a gap in your employment).

If you completed relevant coursework, volunteered, consulted, cared for a family member, or worked on a project, include it only if it is real and useful to the target role. Label the activity accurately and describe what you did without presenting it as employment when it was not. A concise “Career break” entry can clarify a longer break, but a short job-search period does not always need one.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2015 general guidance also recommends adding relevant skills and experience gained while away from the workforce, such as education and volunteer work (Career Outlook: Resume tips). This is general advice, not a measure of current hiring outcomes.

Choose a format that keeps both skills and dates clear

Compare formats by what they emphasize, how clearly they show work history, and how easy their structure is to read. No one format is best for every applicant.

Format What it foregrounds How it handles chronology When it may help
Chronological Roles and experience in sequence Makes job progression and dates straightforward When a clear, relevant employment history supports the application
Skills-focused or functional Transferable skills and qualifications Can make chronology less prominent, so include a clear, truthful employment history as well California’s Department of Human Resources says a functional resume may suit people returning to the job market or changing careers (Writing a Resume)
Accomplishments-first with employers listed afterward Achievements and qualifications before employer history Lists employers chronologically after the accomplishments section Social Security’s Ticket to Work article describes this structure; its program serves eligible people receiving disability benefits, not all job seekers (Closing the Resume Gap)

Whichever you choose, make the relevant qualifications easy to spot without obscuring when and where you worked.

Use ATS tools carefully

Some online resume scans compare resume content with a job posting, as the Department of Labor’s Employment Workshop guide explains. Treat a scan as one review aid, not a final decision-maker: systems vary, and the guide does not establish a universal ATS score or rejection threshold. Include posting language only when it accurately represents your experience, then proofread the document yourself for errors, clarity, and factual accuracy.

Where to get free resume help

In the United States, the Department of Labor guide points job seekers to Transition Centers, family centers, American Job Centers, and nonprofits for more in-depth resume review. Availability and eligibility vary locally, so check with the relevant workforce service. CareerOneStop also connects users with employment and training help at American Job Centers.
