If your pool store has closed, start with manufacturer dealer locators and retailer store finders; they can point you to nearby sellers, and some identify locations that offer water testing. Before traveling or ordering, confirm the branch is open, has the product you need, and—if you rely on it—still accepts pool-water samples. For routine checks, a home test kit can help bridge the gap. For equipment, identify the make, exact model, and part number before asking a manufacturer or qualified dealer to confirm a replacement.
Find another local source before you buy
Use manufacturer and retailer locators as a starting point, not a guarantee of current stock, hours, or services. Call or check the location directly before making a trip, especially if you need water testing or a particular chemical.

- HTH’s store locator lists retailers and includes a filter for locations offering in-store pool-water testing.
- HASA’s pool-owner page directs customers to dealers and distributors.
- Pentair’s pool water guide includes a dealer lookup alongside water-chemistry information.
- Leslie’s describes in-store testing and sells home-testing products; ask the branch whether it is open and accepting samples.
Online and big-box retailers may also carry pool supplies, but stock, delivery limits, and eligibility to ship chemicals vary. Check the exact product listing, seller, label, and shipping terms rather than assuming a category page means the item is available to your address.

Choose how to test the water
Use a store test when it is available
If you value a store’s testing service, confirm that the location performs it and ask how it wants samples collected or brought in. A locator’s testing filter does not establish that the service is available on the day you visit.

Use a home kit or strips for routine checks
Pentair recommends testing pool water at home at least weekly. Kits and strips differ in the measurements they cover and in how results are read, so select one that measures the parameters you need and follow its directions. A home product should not be assumed to duplicate a particular store’s testing equipment, interpretation, or treatment advice. Pentair’s water guide explains why chemistry and chlorine effectiveness depend on pool conditions.
If you already own a reader or test system, check that replacement reagents are explicitly compatible with it. For example, Pentair lists test reagents for compatible systems; that does not mean they fit another brand’s kit.

Match chemicals to the measured need
Buy by the product’s exact identity and intended purpose, not by a broad term such as “chlorine,” “shock,” or “pool chemical.” Products with similar category names may have different formulations or uses. Compare the label, intended use, container size, and the product’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS); use test results and the product label to guide treatment rather than guessing a dose. Clorox Pool’s product and education site is one example of a manufacturer listing testing products, balancers, sanitizers, and product guidance.
Before using a replacement product, read the full label and SDS. The CDC’s Use Pool Chemicals Safely poster warns: “Never mix: Chlorine products with acid; this could create toxic gases.” Open one container at a time, close it before opening another, and measure carefully. Only pre-dissolve a chemical if its label directs you to; if instructed to do so, add chemical to water, never water to chemical.

Replace equipment by exact fit, not by appearance
For a pump, filter, or other component, record the equipment make, exact model, and part number from its label or manual. Also note the configuration relevant to the part. Use the manufacturer’s parts route or a qualified dealer to validate the replacement before ordering; a part that looks similar may not fit or function in your setup.
Before purchase, check the manufacturer, model and part-number match, warranty implications, seller return policy, and whether the part suits your configuration. Without those identifiers, there is no reliable basis for recommending a universal replacement.

Store and dispose of chemicals safely
Keep chemicals in their original labeled containers and follow the storage directions on each product. The CDC’s Store Pool Chemicals Safely poster says: “Keep chemicals closed in original, labeled container.” It also advises separating incompatible chemicals and keeping them dry, cool, ventilated, and out of direct sunlight. Follow current product labels and local rules; for disposal of unlabeled chemicals, contact local or state hazardous-materials authorities.
