Google’s AI Mode shopping tools can help you discover products, while its separate virtual apparel Try-On tool generates an image showing how an eligible garment might look on you. Try-On is for visual inspiration, not a virtual fitting room: it does not determine your size or guarantee how a garment will fit.
What Google announced—and how the features differ
In a May 20, 2025 announcement, Google described AI Mode as using Gemini capabilities and the Shopping Graph to help people explore products through search. The same announcement discussed virtual apparel Try-On, which uses a shopper’s photo to create a visualization of clothing. These are related parts of Google’s shopping experience, but they are not the same feature: AI Mode supports product discovery, while Try-On generates an image of an eligible garment on a person.

Google said its Shopping Graph contained more than 50 billion product listings and that more than 2 billion listings were refreshed each hour at the time of the announcement. Those are company-published figures from May 2025, not independently audited counts or confirmation of a current refresh rate. Google describes Try-On as spanning billions of garments, but that does not establish how many listings are eligible for the tool. Google has not published an accuracy or fit-success statistic in the official material cited here.

Search for a top, bottom, or dress, then open an eligible product listing. Not every listing supports Try-On; Google says Shopping Ads do not show the button, so a listing marked “Sponsored” will not offer it.
-
Select “Try it on” and upload a suitable photo. Google recommends a full-body image from head to toe or a selfie, with good lighting, an uncluttered background, visible hands, and fitted clothing.
-
Review the generated image as an approximation of the garment’s appearance, not as a fit prediction. Google says U.S. users may also use a selfie with its Nano Banana AI model to generate a digital version for Try-On.

The rollout has expanded since Google’s May 2025 announcement, which described a U.S. Search Labs experiment. For the current country list and access conditions, see Google Shopping Help.
What the generated image tells you—and what it doesn’t
Try-On can give you a visual impression of an outfit and help answer a question such as Google’s illustrative prompt, “Will these pants look good on me?” That example comes from Google’s May 2025 announcement; it is not survey evidence about what shoppers commonly ask.

Google warns that generated results can contain errors in body shape, personal features, or garment details. The image does not determine which sizes a merchant has available, and it cannot establish how the real garment will fit. As Google Shopping Help puts it: “The generated image can help you see how an item might look, but it does not determine or guarantee the actual fit of the garment.”
Before deciding what to buy, check the merchant’s size chart and compare its measurements with your own. Also consider the fabric, cut, product details, availability, price, and customer reviews. Those details—not the generated image—are the basis for judging whether a garment is likely to meet your needs.

What Google says about photo privacy
Google says an uploaded photo is used to produce the Try-On image, is not used for training, and is not shared with other Google products, services, or third-party affiliates. The company also says trained reviewers may evaluate image quality, with data disconnected from user accounts and identifying or sensitive information removed automatically. Google says users can delete uploaded and generated photos. These are Google’s descriptions of its practices, not an independent audit; see the Try-On Help page for its current explanation.
When Try-On is useful for a shopping decision
-
Use it to get a rough visual sense of how a top, pair of pants, or dress might look on you.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Do not use it to choose a size, confirm fit, or assume that the pictured garment details will match the item exactly.
-
If the button is missing, check whether the listing is sponsored or whether the item falls into an unsupported category. Even eligible categories do not guarantee every listing will have Try-On.
-
Make the purchase decision using the merchant’s measurements, product information, and reviews, rather than treating the generated image as proof of fit.
