How to Evaluate Memory Stocks: Revenue, Margins, and Market Share

Evaluate memory makers with comparable financial periods, clear GAAP and non-GAAP labels, cash-flow context, and market-share figures tied to a specific product and measurement basis.

Evaluate memory stocks by comparing revenue growth, gross and operating profitability, cash generation, capital spending, and market share within the same product category and period. Keep DRAM, high-bandwidth memory (HBM), and NAND separate, and distinguish company-reported financial results from third-party market estimates. These measures explain a memory maker’s operating position; they do not, on their own, tell you whether its shares are attractively priced.

Start with comparable periods and clearly defined metrics

Memory makers report on different fiscal calendars, and their product mixes differ. A comparison is useful only when you know which period, currency, accounting basis, and business category each figure covers. Start with each company’s latest annual filing and latest quarterly earnings release. Use audited filings for historical financial statements; use the latest earnings release for current-quarter results and management’s outlook.

For every figure, record the company, fiscal period, currency, and basis—GAAP or non-GAAP. Don’t compare one company’s fiscal year with another’s calendar year without saying so. Don’t place an annual figure beside a quarterly one as if they measured the same span. For a year-over-year calculation, compare the same fiscal quarter or the same full-year period in consecutive years:

Year-over-year growth = (current-period revenue − comparable prior-period revenue) ÷ comparable prior-period revenue × 100.

Quarter-over-quarter growth answers a different question: it compares consecutive quarters and may reflect seasonal patterns, rapid price changes, or a shift in product mix. Label it explicitly rather than treating it as an annual growth rate. Memory markets can change quickly, so date every comparison and update it when newer filings or market estimates become available.

Keep the source attached to each number in your notes or spreadsheet. An issuer’s filing is the place to verify historical financial statements and accounting definitions; its earnings release is useful for the latest reported quarter and management’s outlook. A market-share estimate from a research firm is a separate kind of evidence. It may help describe an industry position, but it is not an audited figure from the company. Record the publication and estimate date so a reader can tell which numbers are company-reported and which are third-party estimates.

Before calculating a growth rate, verify that the two revenue figures cover comparable periods and use the same currency and accounting scope. If an issuer’s fiscal year ends on a different date from a peer’s, say so rather than presenting the dates as identical. If a company reports a segment result or a product category alongside consolidated revenue, do not substitute one for the other: identify exactly what the numerator and denominator represent.

What is driving revenue growth?

Revenue is the product of what a company sells, how much it sells, and the prices and mix it realizes. A headline growth rate does not tell you which of those changed. Look for commentary and segment information that help separate shipment volume, selling prices, and product mix. Higher sales of a product category can lift revenue, but the same revenue increase can have very different implications for margins and future demand depending on its cause.

Separate price, volume, and mix

  • Price: If selling prices rise while shipments change little, revenue may grow quickly without an equivalent increase in physical output. In a cyclical market, price-driven growth may be vulnerable if supply catches up with demand.
  • Volume: More units or bits shipped can increase revenue, but the effect depends on pricing and the costs of producing and selling the additional output.
  • Mix: A greater share of higher-value products can raise average revenue and affect margins even if total shipment volume grows more slowly. Check whether the company breaks out relevant product groups; don’t infer a product’s contribution from consolidated revenue alone.

These drivers can occur together. A revenue increase does not automatically tell you how much came from price, how much from additional shipments, or how much from a change in the products sold. Use disclosed segment data and management commentary where available, and be explicit if the company does not provide a precise breakdown. Avoid assigning an exact contribution to price, volume, or mix unless the issuer reports enough information to support it.

Management’s explanation is useful context, not independent proof. Attribute it as the company’s view, then check whether subsequent results, segment disclosures, and market data are consistent with it.

Micron’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K reported that revenue increased 49% year over year, primarily reflecting higher sales of both DRAM and NAND products. The filing also reported consolidated gross margin of 40% for fiscal 2025, compared with 22% for fiscal 2024, and attributed the improvement to better margins in both DRAM and NAND. Those are company-reported results for Micron’s fiscal years, not a forecast or a direct measure of how much its stock may rise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The example shows why it is useful to read revenue and margin disclosures together. The reported growth establishes what happened to total sales, while the filing’s explanation identifies higher DRAM and NAND sales as the primary revenue driver. The margin figures show that profitability relative to revenue also improved in those fiscal years. They do not, by themselves, quantify how much each product contributed, establish the durability of the improvement, or predict the next period.

Read gross margin alongside operating profit

Gross margin shows how much revenue remains after cost of goods sold, expressed as a percentage. It is not the same as gross profit, which is a dollar amount. Both matter: the percentage helps compare profitability relative to sales, while the dollar figure shows the scale of gross profit available to cover operating expenses and other costs.

Gross margin = (revenue − cost of goods sold) ÷ revenue × 100.

Memory gross margins can move substantially with selling prices, product mix, manufacturing costs, and factory utilization. Compare the same metric across matching periods and accounting bases. A rising gross margin can signal improved economics, but it does not establish that every product line improved equally or that the improvement will persist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you compare the percentage, keep the underlying dollar values in view. A margin percentage can rise or fall even as the scale of gross profit changes, and consolidated results can mask differences between DRAM and NAND. Look for product-level details where the issuer reports them, but do not assume a company has disclosed a complete margin breakdown if it has not.

Then examine operating income and operating margin. Operating income reflects gross profit after research and development, selling and administrative expenses, and other operating items. Operating margin divides operating income by revenue. These measures show what remains after the costs of running the business, so they give a fuller view than gross margin alone.

A useful comparison therefore asks more than which company has the higher gross margin. Check whether operating profitability is moving in the same direction, and whether the periods and accounting bases match. Gross margin captures costs directly associated with goods sold; operating income also reflects operating expenses such as R&D. A company can have a strong gross margin while still carrying substantial costs below that line.

Keep GAAP figures separate from adjusted or non-GAAP figures. Companies may exclude items from adjusted measures, so read the release’s reconciliation to understand what was removed and compare like with like. Do not present an adjusted number as though it were a GAAP result. If you use an adjusted metric, label it and use the issuer’s reconciliation rather than silently treating it as interchangeable with the reported statement figure.

Check whether profits turn into cash

Reported earnings and cash generation are related but not interchangeable. Review operating cash flow, capital expenditures, free cash flow, and cash balances together. Memory production requires substantial investment in manufacturing capacity and technology, so capital spending is central to understanding how much cash remains after reinvestment.

  • Operating cash flow indicates cash generated by operating activities during the stated period. Compare it with operating income and note that working-capital movements can affect the relationship.
  • Capital expenditures represent investment in long-lived assets. Check whether the company reports gross or net capital expenditures and how it defines the figure.
  • Free cash flow is often calculated as operating cash flow less capital expenditures, but company-defined adjusted free cash flow may use a different calculation. Read the definition and reconciliation before comparing it with a cash-flow-statement calculation.
  • Cash balances add context about financial flexibility, but a single balance does not show how much cash the company may need for operations, debt, or planned investment.

Look at these measures as a set rather than treating any one as a pass-or-fail test. Operating cash flow provides a view of cash from operations; capital expenditures show a major use of cash for assets and investment. The difference can offer one free-cash-flow measure, but it will not necessarily match a company’s adjusted figure. Check both the label and the calculation before comparing companies or periods.

Micron’s fiscal Q3 2026 release reported, for the quarter ended May 28, 2026, revenue of US$41.456 billion, GAAP gross profit of US$35.056 billion—about 84.6% of revenue—operating income of US$33.318 billion, and operating cash flow of US$25.39 billion. It also reported US$18.3 billion in adjusted free cash flow and net capital expenditures of US$7.1 billion. The adjusted free-cash-flow figure should not be assumed to equal operating cash flow minus net capital expenditures without checking the company’s definition and reconciliation.

These are specifically fiscal Q3 2026 figures. Micron’s official fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results are a later reporting period; use that release for a current comparison rather than carrying forward the Q3 figures as though they were still the latest. The numbers above illustrate which measures to examine, not a substitute for the newest filing. Keep the reporting date alongside every figure, particularly when an article includes an older quarter as an example of how to read the accounts.

Compare market share only within the same product and basis

“Memory market share” is incomplete unless it specifies the product category, period, measurement basis, and publisher. A company’s DRAM revenue share is not its NAND share, and neither is automatically its share of HBM shipments. Keep these categories separate unless a source provides a defined, comparable combined measure.

Revenue share and shipment share answer different questions. Revenue share is a company’s revenue divided by the relevant market’s revenue; it can change as prices or product mix change. Shipment share measures physical units or bits and may move differently. A revenue-share gain therefore does not by itself prove an equivalent gain in physical shipments or manufacturing capacity.

For any share figure, establish the denominator before interpreting the percentage. Confirm whether the estimate covers DRAM, NAND, or another expressly defined category; whether it measures industry revenue or shipments; and what period it covers. A figure described as a supplier’s share of DRAM revenue should not be restated as a share of all memory sales or as a unit-share estimate. Name the publisher and date in the text, table heading, or both.

TrendForce’s 2Q26 DRAM estimate illustrates the price effect. It put industry revenue at nearly US$154.73 billion, up 59.5% quarter over quarter, and linked the increase to sharp rises in conventional DRAM contract prices while supply expansion continued to lag demand growth. TrendForce estimated Micron’s DRAM revenue market share at 23.3% for 2Q26; it reported that Micron’s DRAM revenue rose 65.5% quarter over quarter to US$36.0 billion. These are dated third-party estimates of revenue, not audited market-share figures from Micron and not shipment shares.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those figures are an illustration of why a strong revenue-share result needs context. In the same quarter, the industry’s reported revenue rose sharply alongside higher conventional DRAM contract prices. A supplier’s revenue share can reflect its sales and realized mix as well as movements in market prices. The estimate does not establish that its physical shipments grew by the same percentage, or that the share will hold in a later quarter.

For NAND, TrendForce reported Samsung’s estimated NAND market share at 29.3% in 2Q26 and said the share edged down as competitors grew faster. The release also covered revenue among the top five NAND brands and enterprise SSD demand. That NAND ranking cannot be combined with the DRAM estimates to produce a single memory-market ranking. Different research firms may also define categories or reporting populations differently; don’t treat their estimates as interchangeable without checking the stated methodology.

When comparing two estimates, make sure both come from the same publisher or that their methodologies and definitions are understood. Even if two reports use the same broad label, their category boundaries or included suppliers may differ. If the basis cannot be verified, present the figures separately rather than implying a direct ranking. Market-share estimates are useful for tracking competitive position over time only when the product, basis, period, and source remain clear.

Build a peer comparison without mixing unlike figures

A side-by-side table is useful only when each company’s figures are sourced and comparable. For every peer, gather revenue, gross profit and margin, operating income and margin, operating cash flow, capital expenditures, and the relevant product-level market-share estimate. State whether values are annual or quarterly, GAAP or adjusted, and company-reported or third-party estimated.

The available figures here do not establish a complete, consistently sourced financial comparison for Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Micron. Do not fill missing cells with guesses or compare one company’s Q3 results with another’s annual totals. Obtain each issuer’s latest filings and releases before drawing a numerical peer ranking. For market share, use dated TrendForce estimates as industry context and identify the product and revenue or shipment basis in the table heading.

Build the comparison in a repeatable order. First, choose the same measure and period for each company. Second, record the reported amount and basis, keeping GAAP and adjusted results in distinct rows if both are useful. Third, calculate growth only from comparable periods. Finally, add the relevant market-share estimate in its own product-specific column. If a figure is not reported or a comparable estimate is unavailable, mark it as unavailable rather than filling the gap with a different measure.

A practical comparison sheet can use these columns:

  • Reporting period: fiscal year or quarter, end date, and whether it is year-over-year or quarter-over-quarter.
  • Revenue: reported amount, growth rate, and disclosed drivers such as pricing, volume, or mix.
  • Profitability: gross profit, gross margin, operating income, and operating margin on a consistent basis.
  • Cash and investment: operating cash flow, capital expenditures, the company’s free-cash-flow definition, and cash balance if relevant.
  • Competitive position: product-specific revenue or shipment share, named publisher, and estimate date.

Use the table to expose differences and questions, not to create a false precision ranking. For example, a market-share estimate and a company’s reported revenue growth answer different questions and come from different sources. A company may lead a particular product category by one measure without leading the broader business on operating margin or cash generation. Keep each column’s units, dates, and definitions visible so a reader can see where direct comparisons are valid.

Turn operating performance into an investment question

These operating measures help assess a company’s performance and competitive position; they do not settle whether its stock is a good investment at its current price. A memory maker can report rapid revenue growth, expanding margins, or a rising market-share estimate while its shares already reflect optimistic expectations. Conversely, weak results may be temporary or may reveal a more persistent competitive problem. Separate what the business has reported from what the share price implies about future results.

Memory is cyclical. High prices and strong margins can encourage industry investment, while new capacity and changes in demand can alter the balance over time. A single strong quarter is not enough to establish that current profitability is sustainable. Compare several periods, read management outlook as management’s view rather than a guarantee, and consider whether growth is broad across DRAM, HBM, and NAND or concentrated in one area.

A strong recent result should be read in context: ask whether it is a year-over-year improvement, a quarter-over-quarter change, or both; whether it reflects price, shipments, or mix; and whether the improvement appears in operating results and cash generation as well as revenue. Then consider how much reinvestment the business reports and whether the market-share statistic measures revenue or physical shipments. These questions help keep an operating assessment distinct from a stock-price prediction.

Use a dated checklist before drawing a conclusion:

  1. Match each issuer’s fiscal period, currency, and accounting basis.
  2. Calculate growth against the same prior-year period and identify whether price, shipment volume, or mix is the stated driver.
  3. Compare gross profit and gross margin, then check operating income and operating margin.
  4. Review operating cash flow against capital spending, and distinguish company-defined adjusted free cash flow from a cash-flow-statement measure.
  5. Label each market-share estimate with its product category, period, publisher, and revenue or shipment basis.
  6. Use the latest filings and releases before making a current assessment; do not treat historical growth, a market-share gain, or management’s outlook as a stock recommendation.

The checklist is also a useful way to update an older comparison. Replace stale quarterly figures with the latest issuer release, preserve the earlier period only when it is needed for a matched historical comparison, and refresh third-party share estimates with their publication dates. Do not quietly combine a new market estimate with financial results from a different period as if they describe one synchronized snapshot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I compare revenue growth between memory companies?

Compare the same fiscal quarter or full-year period in consecutive years, and label the period, currency, and accounting scope. Separate year-over-year from quarter-over-quarter growth, then check issuer commentary and disclosures for price, shipment-volume, and product-mix drivers.

Is gross margin enough to judge a memory stock?

No. Gross margin does not include all operating costs or show how much cash remains after investment. Review gross profit, operating income and margin, operating cash flow, capital expenditures, and the company’s free-cash-flow definition alongside it.

What does a memory company’s market share measure?

It depends on the stated category and basis. A DRAM revenue-share estimate is not the same as NAND share, HBM shipment share, or a share of all memory sales. Check the product, period, measurement basis, publisher, and estimate date.

Why can revenue market share rise without the same increase in shipments?

Revenue share can move with selling prices and product mix as well as sales. TrendForce’s 2Q26 DRAM report linked a sharp rise in industry revenue to higher conventional DRAM contract prices, so its revenue-share estimates should not be read as equivalent shipment-share changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I combine DRAM and NAND market-share percentages into one ranking?

Not unless a source supplies a clearly defined, comparable combined measure. DRAM and NAND are separate product categories with separate estimates; TrendForce’s 2Q26 NAND ranking, for example, should not be blended with its DRAM figures.

Should I use GAAP or non-GAAP results for a peer comparison?

Keep the two bases distinct. If you use an adjusted or non-GAAP result, label it and review the issuer’s reconciliation to see what was excluded. Compare like with like rather than treating adjusted figures as GAAP results.

The Bottom Line

Evaluate memory stocks with matched reporting periods, clearly labeled GAAP or adjusted figures, and a view of revenue, margins, cash generation, and capital spending together. Treat DRAM, HBM, and NAND as separate categories, and label every market-share estimate by product, date, publisher, and revenue or shipment basis. These measures describe operating performance and competitive position; they are not, by themselves, a forecast or a buy recommendation.
