There is no evidence-based universal “best” cryptocurrency for a long-term investor. The 2025 framing is out of date, and the SEC guidance cited here does not rank coins or establish future returns. A more useful decision is whether speculative crypto exposure fits your finances—and, if it does, whether to hold crypto directly or use an exchange-traded product.
Start with your financial plan, not a coin ranking
A long holding period does not make a speculative investment safe. The SEC describes crypto asset securities as exceptionally risky and volatile and says investors should put at risk only money they can afford to lose entirely. Its March 23, 2023 investor alert also emphasizes that investment decisions should reflect your risk tolerance, time horizon, asset allocation, and diversification.
Before considering crypto, ask whether a total loss of the amount invested would derail your goals. Decide what role—if any—speculative exposure would play in a diversified plan, rather than treating a long time horizon as a reason to take unlimited risk. These are general educational considerations, not individualized financial or tax advice.
Understand the risks—and the limits of crypto yield accounts
Crypto prices can be volatile, and the SEC warns of risks such as fraud and the potential loss of an investment. Crypto-related products add their own risks, including operational, custody, and market risks. The available SEC guidance does not establish which asset will perform best over a long period.

An account that pays interest on crypto is not the same as an insured bank or credit union deposit. The SEC’s February 14, 2022 bulletin identifies risks including asset-price volatility, company failure, regulatory changes, fraud, technical problems, and being unable to recover assets. Do not interpret a promised yield as a guarantee or as deposit insurance.
Compare direct ownership with exchange-traded exposure
Direct ownership and an exchange-traded product (ETP) are different ways to get exposure. The SEC’s September 9, 2024 bulletin covers U.S. ETPs providing exposure to bitcoin and ether. It distinguishes spot products, which hold the crypto asset, from futures products, which hold futures contracts based on the asset.

| Route | What is held | Key and custody responsibilities | Costs and exposure considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct ownership | You hold the crypto asset. | You may manage the private keys yourself or use a third-party custodian. The custody choice changes who has operational responsibility. | Check platform, transaction, and transfer charges; amounts vary by provider. Your exposure is to the crypto asset, with the risks of the venue and custody arrangement. |
| Spot bitcoin or ether ETP | The product holds bitcoin or ether; you hold ETP shares rather than managing the product’s underlying crypto directly. | The product’s sponsor and custody arrangements matter. Review the product documents to understand how assets are held. | Sponsor fees reduce the crypto assets represented by shares over time, and share prices may deviate from the underlying asset’s price. Underlying crypto markets may have enhanced fraud and manipulation potential. |
| Futures ETP | The product holds futures contracts based on bitcoin or ether, not the underlying crypto asset itself. | You hold ETP shares; the product’s structure and disclosures determine how it manages its futures exposure. | Review the product’s fees, risks, and tracking disclosures. Its exposure is through futures contracts rather than direct ownership of the crypto asset. |
These distinctions are not guarantees of safety or suitability. Compare each product’s current prospectus, fees, custody details, and risks before investing; terms and availability can vary by product and jurisdiction.
Choose a custody approach you can manage
A crypto wallet does not contain the crypto itself. As the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance explains in its December 12, 2025 custody bulletin, “Crypto wallets do not store crypto assets themselves; instead, they store the ‘private keys’ or passcodes for your crypto assets.” Those credentials control access, so losing them or exposing them can have serious consequences.

Self-custody
With self-custody, you take responsibility for protecting the access credentials. A hardware wallet is one optional physical tool for people who choose this route, but a device does not prevent every form of theft, error, or loss. Make sure you understand how credentials and recovery information work before moving assets.
Third-party custody
Using a custodian shifts some operational tasks to another organization; it does not remove the need to assess the risks. The SEC advises researching custodians carefully and checking all charges. Ask about annual asset-based fees, transaction fees, asset-transfer fees, and account setup or closure fees. Confirm how the provider holds assets and what its procedures are for access and recovery.

Use a due-diligence checklist before deciding
- Test suitability: Decide whether you can tolerate losing the full amount without compromising your financial goals.
- Set the role and size: Consider crypto only within a broader asset-allocation and diversification plan that reflects your time horizon and risk tolerance.
- Choose the exposure route: Determine whether direct ownership, a spot ETP, or a futures ETP matches your needs, and verify what the specific product actually holds.
- Read current disclosures: Review product structure, custody arrangements, fees, and risk disclosures rather than relying on a coin label or a past performance claim.
- Check custody and access: If holding directly, decide who controls the private keys and how recovery works. If using a custodian, investigate its procedures and fee schedule.
- Verify local details: Check current legal, tax, and product-availability requirements for your jurisdiction before acting.
Because fees reduce the portion of an investment that remains invested, compare the full cost of each route—not just a prominently displayed management fee. The SEC’s July 23, 2025 bulletin on fees and expenses explains why recurring charges can affect portfolio value over time.
