Evaluate China Construction Bank (CCB) by first choosing the listing you intend to buy, then examining earnings and net interest margin, loan quality, capital, dividend status and valuation against a market price recorded on a specific date. CCB’s first-half 2026 results showed year-over-year growth in operating income and net profit, but those historical results do not establish that either listing is attractively priced today. CCB trades in Shanghai as 601939 and in Hong Kong as 939; their prices, currencies and market contexts must not be mixed.

Start by identifying the exact CCB share listing

China Construction Bank has two listed share lines relevant to individual investors: Shanghai-listed A-shares, ticker 601939, and Hong Kong-listed H-shares, ticker 939. CCB identifies both on its investor-relations page. Before looking up a quote, confirm the ticker, exchange, currency and share class shown by your broker. A price or yield calculation for one listing is not automatically valid for the other.

Listing Ticker What to record for analysis
Shanghai A-share 601939 Shanghai market price, quote date and time, and currency (RMB)
Hong Kong H-share 939 Hong Kong market price, quote date and time, and currency (HKD)

CCB’s financial reports present company-wide results in renminbi; the shares, however, trade on separate exchanges and in different currencies. Keep those facts distinct. If you convert a quote or compare an H-share price with RMB-denominated financial data, state the exchange rate and date used. Also check whether your broker’s quote is delayed and whether a price is adjusted for a corporate action.

Read the latest results as a dated snapshot, not a forecast

CCB announced its 2026 interim results on August 28, 2026. For the six months ended June 30, it reported operating income of RMB 426.333 billion, up 10.48% year over year, and net profit of RMB 171.677 billion, up 5.56%. Total assets were RMB 47.33 trillion at June 30, up 3.72% from year-end 2025. These are company-reported results for specific periods, not a projection for the full year or a promise of future growth. See the 2026 interim-results release.

Measure Reported figure Period or comparison How to use it
Operating income RMB 426.333 billion First half of 2026; up 10.48% year over year Check which income sources drove the growth and whether it continues in later reporting periods.
Net profit RMB 171.677 billion First half of 2026; up 5.56% year over year Compare profit growth with income growth and examine the expenses and provisions behind the difference.
Total assets RMB 47.33 trillion At June 30, 2026; up 3.72% from year-end 2025 Use the full report to understand changes in the balance sheet, including loans and other exposures.

Income grew faster than net profit in this half-year comparison. That difference is a prompt to inspect costs, credit provisions, taxes and other items in the report; by itself, it does not identify a cause. A bank’s headline income can rise while costs or losses absorb some of the gain. Avoid simply doubling a half-year result to estimate a full-year result: the cited figures do not establish that the second half will match the first.

Separate lending economics from other income

CCB reported first-half 2026 net interest income of RMB 310.958 billion, up 8.46% year over year, and net non-interest income of RMB 115.375 billion, up 16.31%. Net interest margin (NIM) was 1.37%, three basis points above 2025 and one basis point above first-quarter 2026. These figures are in the company’s interim-results release.

NIM is a measure of the net interest earned on interest-bearing assets relative to those assets. For a bank, it helps show how the returns on loans and other interest-earning assets compare with the costs of deposits and other funding. It is not a standalone measure of profit: a bank can have a changing margin while its balance-sheet size, non-interest income, expenses or credit costs also change. For CCB, the reported 1.37% is a period-specific figure. Evaluate its direction across comparable reporting periods and read management’s explanation of funding costs, lending rates and asset mix rather than assuming that a one-period improvement will persist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Non-interest income also deserves a closer look. The first-half increase of 16.31% was faster than the 8.46% increase in net interest income, but the headline figure does not tell an investor which components contributed, whether they are recurring, or how volatile they may be. Consult the detailed income statement and notes in the interim report. When tracking the business over time, compare like-for-like periods and use the same accounting basis; a half-year figure should not be compared casually with a full-year figure.

Assess loan quality and the reserves available for losses

At June 30, 2026, CCB reported a non-performing loan (NPL) ratio of 1.29%, down 0.02 percentage points from year-end 2025. Its allowance-to-NPL ratio was 238.69%, up 5.54 percentage points. Those ratios are useful starting points, not a complete assessment of credit risk. The company reported them in its interim-results release; its 2026 Half-Year Report provides fuller disclosures to examine.

  • NPL ratio: Consider the share of loans classified as non-performing, but do not treat a small movement as proof that all underlying credit risk improved. Review the report’s definition, loan balances and classifications.
  • Allowance-to-NPL ratio: This compares loan-loss allowances with reported NPLs. A higher ratio can indicate more allowances relative to classified NPLs, but it does not show the full expected-loss picture on its own. Read the allowance methodology, provision movements and relevant loan disclosures.
  • Loan mix and concentrations: Look for the amount and direction of exposures by borrower type, industry, geography and other categories disclosed by the bank. Concentrations may matter even when a headline NPL ratio is stable.
  • Changes in classification and provisioning: Review new NPLs, recoveries, write-offs, overdue loans, restructured exposures and provisions as disclosed. These details help explain what lies behind the headline ratios.

The most useful question is not simply whether 1.29% looks high or low in isolation, but whether credit indicators are moving in a way consistent with the bank’s portfolio, provisions and disclosures over time. Compare CCB’s figures with its own earlier periods and with other banks using the same reporting date, definitions and accounting basis. The supplied headline ratios do not establish a peer ranking or a conclusion about the adequacy of every reserve.

Check capital ratios and how they are changing

At June 30, 2026, CCB reported a total capital adequacy ratio of 19.42% and a core tier-1 capital adequacy ratio of 14.24%. Capital ratios are measures of regulatory capital relative to risk-weighted exposures; they are not interchangeable with a simple ratio of capital to total assets. CCB’s reported numbers are an entry point for examining its capacity to absorb losses and support its balance sheet, not a complete verdict on safety or future returns.

Read the capital section of the 2026 Half-Year Report for definitions, components, risk-weighted assets and movements. Compare ratios over several reporting dates and check whether a change reflects capital, risk exposures or both. For a peer comparison, align the reporting period and regulatory basis. A ratio from another bank or a different period may not be directly comparable.

Verify the dividend: approved, proposed and paid are different statuses

Dividend analysis requires both a per-share figure and its status. CCB’s 2025 annual report proposed a final cash dividend of RMB 2.029 per ten shares, subject to shareholder approval. The 2026 Half-Year Report says the annual shareholders’ meeting approved the 2025 profit distribution on June 26, 2026, and reports a total 2025 annual cash dividend of RMB 101.684 billion. The approval status and total are documented in the 2026 Half-Year Report; the proposal appeared in the 2025 Annual Report.

Separately, on August 28, 2026, CCB proposed an interim 2026 cash dividend of RMB 2.010 per ten shares, tax inclusive, for common shareholders. The company said the proposal represented about RMB 52.582 billion in total and that the dividend ratio would increase from 30.0% in 2025 to 31.0%; it also said the proposal would be submitted to shareholders for deliberation. The 2026 Half-Year Report likewise describes the interim dividend as a proposal still to be submitted to shareholders. Do not label it approved or paid on the basis of those documents; check for a later company announcement if you need its current status.

“Per ten shares” is not “per share.” For a simple nominal per-share conversion, divide the stated RMB amount by ten, then verify which share classes and holders the distribution applies to and whether the relevant announcement gives different treatment for A-shares and H-shares. A shareholder’s eventual cash receipt may also depend on tax treatment, record and payment dates, and the rules applicable to the holding and jurisdiction. The cited facts do not determine an individual investor’s tax liability.

To calculate a dividend yield, use an explicitly dated price for the exact listing and align the dividend amount, currency, share basis and status. For example, a proposed dividend is not a dependable substitute for an approved distribution when assessing an expected yield. A trailing yield based on distributions already declared or paid answers a different question from a forward yield based on an unapproved proposal. State which one you mean and show the assumptions.

Value each listing using a timestamped price

The official materials cited here provide recent operating and dividend information, but not a timestamped current share price or a sourced peer valuation comparison. Consequently, they do not support a current price-to-book ratio, price-to-earnings ratio, dividend yield, or a claim that CCB shares are cheap or expensive. Obtain a current quote for 601939 or 939 from a reliable market-data source, record the date and time, and perform calculations for that listing only.

Measure Basic calculation What to verify before interpreting it
Price-to-book (P/B) Market price per share ÷ book value per share Use book value per share for the matching share basis and an identified reporting date. Check whether you are using reported or adjusted book value.
Price-to-earnings (P/E) Market price per share ÷ earnings per share Specify whether earnings are trailing, annual, or an estimate. Do not call a half-year figure annual earnings without stating an estimation method.
Dividend yield Annual dividend per share ÷ market price per share Specify the dividend period and whether the distribution is proposed, approved, declared or paid; match the currency and share basis.
Return on equity (ROE) Net income attributable to shareholders ÷ average shareholders’ equity Use a consistent period and definition. Check whether the ratio is annualized and whether average or period-end equity is used.
Return on assets (ROA) Net income ÷ average total assets Confirm the income and asset definitions and period, and compare like with like across banks.

The formulas are starting points, not substitutes for checking the underlying reporting definitions. For banks, P/B is often useful to examine alongside profitability and risk because book equity and returns on that equity are central to the balance sheet. A lower P/B does not by itself establish a bargain: it may reflect lower expected profitability, risk concerns or other market judgments. A higher P/B also needs to be assessed against returns, growth, capital and risk rather than treated as proof of quality.

For P/E, make sure the earnings denominator is neither a one-off nor an unexamined extrapolation. CCB’s first-half 2026 net profit is a six-month company-reported figure. Dividing a current share price by a full-year earnings number derived merely by doubling that figure would be an investor’s rough assumption, not a reported full-year result. Label such an estimate clearly or wait for a full-year report.

Compare CCB with its own history and other banks

A meaningful comparison uses the same reporting period, accounting basis, ratio definitions and, where possible, similar operating context. Build a small comparison set rather than relying on one headline multiple. For CCB’s own history and for any peer banks you select, review:

  • Profitability: ROE and ROA, using consistent formulas and periods.
  • Interest economics: NIM level and direction, net interest income growth and the contribution of non-interest income.
  • Credit risk: NPL ratio, allowance coverage, provisioning movements, loan composition and concentration disclosures.
  • Capital: core tier-1 and total capital adequacy ratios, along with changes in capital and risk-weighted assets.
  • Distribution policy: payout, declared distributions and the status of any proposed dividend.

Do not compare CCB’s first-half 2026 numbers with a competitor’s full-year figures as if they cover the same period. Nor should one bank’s reserve ratio be ranked against another’s without confirming definitions and accounting treatment. If the comparison cannot be normalized, state that limitation and use the figures as context rather than a precise ranking.

Run a downside check before deciding

A useful evaluation asks what would have to remain true for the investment case to work, and what could weaken it. Use the next reports to test your assumptions rather than treating one interim release as a complete picture.

  • If NIM falls: Consider how sensitive the bank’s net interest income and overall earnings may be to a narrower lending-versus-funding spread. Look for subsequent NIM figures and explanations of deposit and asset pricing.
  • If loan losses rise: Track NPLs, provisions, write-offs and disclosed portfolio exposures together. A stable headline NPL ratio alone may not capture every change in credit risk.
  • If profit growth slows: Separate interest income, non-interest income, operating costs and credit costs to identify which components changed. Do not assume revenue growth will flow through to net profit at the same rate.
  • If a dividend is central to the case: Check the formal approval and payment status, the amount on the appropriate share basis, and whether the company’s reported results and capital position support the distribution over time.
  • If valuation depends on a low multiple: Test whether the apparent discount persists using a price from the exact listing and compare profitability, asset quality and capital on a consistent basis.

This is a way to identify questions for further analysis, not a forecast of what CCB or the wider banking sector will do. The reported interim indicators alone do not quantify how a future stress scenario would affect earnings, capital or dividends.

A practical pre-investment checklist

  1. Choose the security. Confirm Shanghai ticker 601939 or Hong Kong ticker 939, including the exchange and currency.
  2. Set the information date. Record the market quote’s date and time, and note the date of the latest company financial report or announcement used.
  3. Read the actual reporting period. Keep first-half 2026 figures separate from full-year figures and distinguish company-reported results from your own estimates.
  4. Trace earnings drivers. Review operating income, net profit, net interest income, non-interest income and NIM together, then check the report for costs and provisions.
  5. Inspect credit disclosures. Go beyond the NPL ratio to loan mix, concentrations, allowance movements and other credit exposures detailed in the half-year report.
  6. Review regulatory capital. Confirm the core tier-1 and total capital ratios, their trends and the supporting disclosures on capital and risk-weighted assets.
  7. Verify dividend status. Separate the approved 2025 distribution from the proposed 2026 interim payment, and check subsequent announcements if current status matters.
  8. Calculate valuation consistently. Use a listing-specific price, matching currency and share basis, and a clearly stated earnings or book-value period.
  9. Compare like with like. Align reporting periods and definitions for CCB’s history and any peer banks before drawing a relative conclusion.
  10. Write down the reasons to change your view. Identify the future results, credit indicators, capital changes or dividend decisions that would make you reassess the thesis.

What the available figures can and cannot establish

The reported first-half 2026 growth, NIM, credit ratios, capital ratios and dividend decisions provide concrete inputs for an evaluation. They do not provide a live quote, establish a current valuation multiple, compare CCB with a defined peer group, or determine an investor’s tax outcome. A defensible decision therefore combines these dated company disclosures with listing-specific market data and a consistent comparison framework; it does not infer an investment recommendation from a dividend or one favorable operating period alone.
